TAAB 2 Poll « Thread Started on Mar 28, 2012, 6:11pm »
I really think that I will like it better and it will be played more often. Maybe I'm just getting old and can identify with an older perspective but I think that TAAB2 is damn good. Then again maybe it's just new material that I crave and it will wear off. We'll see.

I am looking forward to listening to TAAB2 all the way through, In all fairness we have to give TAAB2 a few listens. From what I have heard so far I like it.
I have listened to TAAB2 three times in two days...all the way through, which is the way it should be heard. I am thrilled to have a new, 70s sounding Jethro Tull album. Of course, it's not Tull, but sounds the same. I absolutely love it. There's only one piece I would have left out and that is "Pebbles Instrumental". Ian did a great job with this record. I will see them in September...8th row center. Thanks Ian
It just hasn't quite grabbed me melodically yet. For this reason alone I don't think it is 70's sounding. Nostalgic, maybe. Is it good? Oh, definitely! I got the deluxe version with the DVD included. Haven't watched it yet.
I have listened to the album in its entirety about half a dozen times, and some of the songs out of sequence, and I LOVE it. I was expecting to at least like it, particularly based on hearing "Adrift and Dumbfounded" and "A Change of Horses" in concert, but I didn't expect to LOVE LOVE LOVE it all the way through. It really grows and deepens with subsequent plays.
At least as good as the original "Brick," but I don't see the need to say which is better. I love them both! Kudos to Ian for a late career creative renaissance!

I like TAAB2 better. Probably because I've listened to TAAB1 so much and TAAB2 is new music.
.....and the sand castle virtues are all swept away.
The original Brick is untouchable. We're talking finest hour here. TAAB2 is interesting enough, entertaining at times, but it is never on the same level. The glory road leads right back to the '70's.
I love "Kismet in Suburbia" a lot. Leads me back to the beautiful SLOB, more than the Brick.
Tell the boys from that CNN, the good cops have come to town.

Cool! Don't get me wrong, I love it, too! I just can't get into comparisons, somehow.

I think that the last three tracks have close to as as much power as Brick 1 does. I don't hear anything resembling Slob when listening to Suburbia. Closer to Brick 1 to my ears.
TAAB2 = DECENT ANDERSON SOLO ALBUM (ONE OF HIS BETTER ONES)
NO REAL COMPARISON
I agree that musically there's no real comparison, but as far as the lyrics and concept are concerned, TAAB2 is at least the equal of the original.
It's very interesting because TAAB1 is, to a large extent, about the trials and tribulations of growing up in a cruel and uncaring world, whereas TAAB2 is to a large extent about the trials and tribulations of growing old in a world where so much has changed....except for the cruel and uncaring aspect. It's also a metaphor about how Anderson and his audience have grown old together over all these years. Both albums were crafted with Ian's average-aged fan, then and now, specifically in mind.
I like how Ian has gone the full nine yards with this, in terms of placing Gerald in the context of modern society with social media, an updated online St. Cleve Chronicle, etc. And from what I understand from the early reports of the opening show last night, Ian has put together a stage show full of props, antics and humor, as sort of a nod to the original Brick lineup. I think it's going to be a very fun show, with a visual aspect that has been missed for many years.
Having said all that, I still wish it were a Tull show with Martin and Doane.
Welcome to The Jethro Tull Board, "housebrick," have fun here!
TAAB2 = DECENT ANDERSON SOLO ALBUM (ONE OF HIS BETTER ONES)
NO REAL COMPARISON
I agree with it being no comparison - I voted "are you insane?" in the poll. However, calling TAAB2 "one of his better solo albums" is a huge dis IMHO. I think it's 1000 times better than any of his solo albums. In fact, I think that this is the best album Ian has put out in 30 years! It really should've been a proper Tull album, but sadly Martin didn't want to participate, so it is what it is. But now that I've listened to it over a dozen times and it's growing on me more and more, I'm over that and can accept it for what it is - a great album period.
There's no category that suits me. No, TAAB2 isn't nearly as good as the original album but I still think it is excellent and definitely the best release by IA/Tull since at least Crest of Knave so I can't bring myself to vote for "are you insane?"! LOL

Yes its a lot better than all IA albums but i still see Crest,Roots and even Dot C as Stronger albums. It has some great stuff and too me some rubbish also (espec Narration/Hot Mango Flush take 2 etc) on it . So this doesnt make a GReat album for me. TAAB1 is quality from start to finish!
No one really knows the Martin situ although in his recent a new day interview he says he wasnt invited to play on it .

Rubbish? Why would you criticize the album for the spoken parts comparing it to Mango Flush and then in the same breath say DC is better? Besides Hot Mango Flush is one of the better tracks on DC IMO. All of you who don't like HMF and Wounded, Old and Treacherous should listen again. There are weak moments on TAAB as well, as a matter of fact more moments that I don't care for exist on TAAB. I could do without the beginning of side two (spoken parts there as well). I think that from beginning to end this album stacks up well with any of the Tull catalogue. It's not the best in their cannon and technically is not a Tull album but it sounds much more so than any of Ian's other solo works.

DC has only 1 of these spoken moments TAAB2 has more 3 at last count ?
I find this Corny/tacky Taab 1 doesnt have this affect on me Already agreed its far better than Ians other stuff
BTW Martin who wrote all music for Hot M F said in an interview he was quite dissapointed in the vocal when he 1 st heard it himself
Wow. Oh well, everybody has their own tastes - personally, I think Dot Com is the worst Tull album by far - yes, even worse than Under Wraps.
Initially, I had similar reactions to TAAB2 as far as the spoken word bits go....I thought it lent the album a kind of cheesy Broadway musical feel. But as I've listened to the album more and more (approaching 20 times now) it's grown on me along with the rest of it...it actually fits the "concept" well, as a whole piece. In fact I find myself listening to the album from start to finish without skipping around to keep the experience of continuity.
After the first few listenings, I thought wow, best thing he's done since Roots. The more I hear it, I get more of a classic Tull feel from it as I pick up more and more nuances from it. Soon I started thinking hmmm, best since Crest. But now, (IMHO of course) I think it's even surpassed that one....I'd say it's his best effort since Broadsword.
The spoken parts on TAAB-1 are just intermittent surreal effects. I tend to agree that in TAAB 2 they go on a bit long, but the sudden transition to singing at the beginning of Give Till It Hurts is awesome, and very much in the spirit of the original.
(I think Dot Com is a fine album and a good way to go out if it should turn out to be Tull's last all original effort. I thought it more classic than much of the previous 2 decades. For me Catfish Rising and maybe Rock Island are the absolute lowest points-- i.e. least proggish, but I still enjoy those too.)
