Yes, long ago in fact - 1993 of liver cancer. Ronson's widow Suzi attributed his illness to his habit of drinking a bottle of spirits a day....

Mick Ronson - 'Ronno'
I'd like to expand on Mick's career post Bowie (or rather in-between Bowie) with worthwhile albums in brackets
Mick Ronson kept himself very busy after Ziggy 'had to break up the band'. Initially he recorded the first of his two solo albums with RCA/Mainman, 'Slaughter on 10th Avenue' before joining the final throes of Mott The Hoople for a European tour and single (Saturday Gigs / Lounge Lizard). Ian Hunter and Mick worked together on and off for the rest of Mick's life (check out Hunter's tribute to Mick, 'Michael Picasso') After Mick's 2nd album ('Play Don't Worry') and Hunters debut solo ('Ian Hunter') and subsequent tour, Mick was invited by Bob Dylan to join his Rolling Thunder Review tour band ('The Bootleg Series Vol 5') Micks Influence can be both heard and seen on this tour. Mick worked either as a contributor, arranger and producer (or all three) with many artists and the following is but a scrapping of the surface, David Johansen, Morrissey ('Your Arsenal') T-Bone Burnett, Roger McGuinn, The Wildhearts (Micks last ever contribution was on the track 'My Baby is a Head F--k' is well worth checking out) The Mamas and The Papas, Dalbello, John (Cougar) Mellencamp ('Jack and Diane' was discarded, Mick worked all night on it, the result was a huge hit) John Cale the list goes on... Whilst with Bowie, Mick co-produced Lou Reeds 'Transformer' album and also wrote all the arrangement's , the song Perfect Day in Lou's own words, would have been "nothing without Ronno and could have been released as an instrumental" Mick passed away in 1993 from liver cancer - which is not an alcohol related cancer (I very much doubt my friend Suzi would ever have said the quote in the previous post ) Before Mick passed away he began working with Bowie again and can be heard on the Cream cover 'I Feel Free' (Black tie White Noise) whilst Bowie himself contributed to Micks last solo album (the posthumously released) 'Heaven and Hull' working together on the Dylan track 'Like A Rolling Stone' Mick Ronson really is an unsung figure in the music world, his contribution to some of the major acts of the past decades have gone pretty much unrecognised (accept by those he worked with) but we're trying to change all that, if anyone is interested I am heading up a campaign to have Mick inducted into the Rock n roll hall of fame, Cleveland, (not everyone's favourite cuppa tea I realise, but it is the best known) part of the campaign is a petition @ www.ipetitions.com/petition/ronno David Bowie has personally written to the academy on behalf of the campaign recommending and nominating Mick for induction. I await with interest.
(for the record, ex Spider Trevor Bolder is a long time member of Uriah Heep whilst Mick 'Woody' Woodmansey continues as a session drummer (Art Garfunkel, 3-D)
