 Effeminate Ian
« Thread Started on Jun 28, 2012, 3:27pm »

There's been this trend with Ian, especially of late, of talk of his effeminate side.

Whether he's feeling like a wimp on Beside Myself, or romanticizing over a little black kitten, he certainly has made point to have it be noticed.

And now with the release of TAAB2 he opens up further telling us his father thought he was gay, and that he preferred doing girlie things as a kid instead of hanging with the boys. Of course he's placed Gerald in a gay relationship in TAAB2 as well.

Anyone want to talk about this, or is it best left swept under the rug?

Well...this is a potentially very interesting subject. The real question is: what does one consider to be effeminate? I don't think any of the above mentioned traits qualifies Ian as such. Not to cast the spotlight on myself, but I'm a straight male who has never been into the traditional "men's" stuff. I don't like beer, am untinterested in cars, I can't stand sports, and I'm not into straight-ahead rock-and-roll (my favorite musician stands on one leg in tights while playing the flute, for crying out loud! :)) Does that make me effeminate? Maybe it does...If it does, I guess I'm in good company with IA!

What are gender roles and what do they signify? Discuss! :)

nooo, only joking.

I suspect this will get a bit of aheated debate going again. ;)

I don't know, I probably sound like an apologist, butI have no issues about any persons sexuality, and I don't have an issue about many of Ian's lyrics which touch on his prediliction towards sensitive and caring as it seemed the lighter, brighter way to be, other than the fact that I find the ones related to cats to be the least interesting of all his composiitons [Maybe because I prefer dogs to cats....].

Half the trouble with Ian in interviews is that he finds a topic and doesn't let it go, like the 'I haven't had gay sex but...' line he dropped into several interviews whenever he could a while back, it's just not needed, done for effect, possibly, but mostly its unnecessary.... isn't it?

I always thought Ian did make that side of him apparent throughout the years, maybe just not as much as he does now. All you have to do is look at some of his stage antics, whether it be spinning around and then throwing his arms up with an arched back like a ballerina, or whipping Glascock's ass with a riding crop, he's always been secure in his manhood enough to allude to these things.

Quite frankly, I don't find much effeminate about Ian Anderson. Even in tights he looked like all man to me. But carry on, I may have a new point view before it's all said and done. (Or not.) :)

I believe that Ian's brother Robin, who was director of the Scottish Ballet, was gay - which could be the source of his feelings and insights in this regard. He may well have witnessed some uneasy exchanges between his father and his brother. At a Boston area show a few years back, Ian made a brief comment on the recent passing of his brother's partner who he described as 'indeed, a uncle to my children.' He was noticably moved when speaking of the gentleman.

Interesting observation and not one I recall reading before, though I was aware of his older brother Robin being both gay and the head of the Scottish ballet.
Yes, either I downloaded that show, saw it on You Tube or read of it, I recall him making said mention.

Let's not forget, in 1968 Ian began a business relationship with a hermaphrodite. One of the smartest business decisions he ever made.

Well lets not forget.....Ian as the QUEEEN!
So it's not a recent thing.

(I know Jim still wants believe that they dug up the corpse of the real Elizabeth for this photoshoot but .....)
Tell me Jim, why would they hire such an ugly woman to be the queen? I've never seen artwork that depicted here as this kind of ugly (sorry Ian but your not a pretty woman).

"Ugly Woman" ? :-X How dare you ?
Darin, this is a female actress in make-up trying to be a former queen.
I know the idea of Ian being this character is intriguing.
My earlier reasons for him to not shave his beard for this role still stand. :P
I need more evidence than a clever video with face-transplants. ;D

THAT'S YOUR ANSWER? The beautiful Helen Mirren? ( star of Caligula) Dressed as the queen she looks 10 times prettier and more womanly than Ian in pancake make up. Why would they go out and find an ugly woman with a jutting jaw and an Adams apple not to mention that "mannish" hand on the sword.
So where is Ian Jim? Couldn't make it that day? Cause he was at Max's Precious Beard Grooming Palace? So they decided to cut and paste him into the photo, just like the Sealion? Hmmmmm pretty weak argument. I think the whole idea of Ian cross dressing makes you a little squeamish , no?

No.
I am always wary of video enhancement and special effects.
Having seen many examples of such in the past, this technology is not new.
If this was real, I would have no problem believing it, the same as Gerald Bostock.
I just don't believe Ian shaved his whiskers off for this particular promotion.
The only way this could be him is for someone to air brush the final photo.
Did you ever see a movie called "The Running Man" starring Arnold Schwarzenegger ?

I did NO video enhancements. It's not magic. I took a picture of the bearded Ian at the same angle and laid it on top of the Queens face and just adjusted the opacity until it became opaque and did it slowly so that the matching features could be seen as it changed from one picture to the next. I didn't change ANY features. NO tricks. Martins face (or anyone else's face for that matter, except for maybe James Duncan's) wouldn't have had the same result.

Quote:

He didn't have to!!!! They have rubber applications to make NOSES, BALD CAPS and CHINS!!. Very 70s technology, heheh. Ever seen Harry Potter, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings? see this link: http://www.themakeupgallery.info/hair/index.htm
You think all those characters are real?
You know also that Ian, at that time cut his beard down drastically from the APP times. Wouldn't have taken much to cover it with a chin application. It might go to explaining why the queen has such a jutting chin.

Quote:

Airbrushing would not have been out of the question BUT I doubt they used one or they would've finished the the missing parts of the Sealion between Shonas legs and gave him a shadow (thats easy stuff with an airbrush). They might've given the pasted in Ian in the back a shadow also. As it is he doesn't have one. David (at the time) Palmers head is casting the shadow behind (and thru) the pasted in Ian. I think the only extent they went to in "effecting" the picture is with an x-acto knife and rubber cement.
Look at the light on Terry Ellis' face and David Palmers Face. Then look at the amount of light on the "pasted in" Ian's face. Ian would've needed more light put on his face for that and would've made a very distinct shadow, the standard he's holding also has none.
Question remains. Why was the image of Ian pasted in the back?
There's only one logical answer: He was already IN the picture along with all the others in the band and others associated with the crew and the Chrysalis office.
Besides Jim, who's the boss? who is the character portraying authority there? Who's "Tull" Jim? c'mon......Who's the boss Jim?
The Queen is the boss = Ian is the boss. ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

Okay, okay! I'll take your word on it. :-X
But, I will ask Ian myself in Asheville on September 28th.
If he tells me a different person was the Queen, Arnold Schwarzenegger will come visit you.
As Ben Richards - The Running Man! By the way: Shona's the Boss now. :o :o :o :o :o
Also, who is the little girl with the machine gun? We need her on the Board. ;D

Once there was an article that suggested thet 'The Queen' was Patrick Halling and the 'Ladies' were the string quartet, but the possible Patrick Halling connection was discounted by Patrick himself in out Q&A with him a little while back.

The weight of evidence now seems to point to Ian

Man it really looks like him, but I'm definetly curious as to how Ian would answer this question. I suppose Dee Palmer would know also. So who wants to ask her? :)
