Impressive!! Back in the day 1966-70, my Friday night activity was going to the local slot car shop. I owned a couple, a mustang and (I think) something called an Asp. The Asp was a real slick slot car. I threw them both out about 15 years ago.

I used to love slot cars too when I was a kid. Train sets also, like the one designed and built by Jon Grant (a/k/a smallcigar), which he describes in elaborate detail in his three-part magazine article, weaving in the titles to all of Jethro Tull and Ian's albums, which I am still intending to finish, Jon, so please bear with me and I'll have some more comments on the rest of your piece! (I will also email it to Paul, since I saw that he expressed interest.)
I am pretty sure that there is a slot car place in Manhattan run by a guy who has got an incredible set-up, at least there was a few years ago, because I was looking into birthday parties, and I think this guy has children's birthday parties where the main activity aside from pizza and cake is the kids getting to play slot cars.
The trouble with Manhattan birthday parties is that they will usually run you at least $750 for 10-12 kids.

If I took my child to one of those slot car parties I'd be the one saying "hold on there (insert child's name), let dad show you how to do that!"

What slot car system do you use on that side of the water? Over here the biggest name is Scalextric, which looks like the track system in the photo's above.

If you're outside the UK but are aware of the TV programme 'Top Gear', you may have heard of James May, he also does a few science based programmes and is essentially, like many of us, just a big kid at heart.
This extract, from one of his own TV programmes, shows him organising the building of the longest Scalextric track at the home of English motor racing, Brooklands
The whole 1 hour show may be available on youtube in parts if you're interested in seeing how they went about building the track on the now defunct Brooklands circuit.
This second clip, below, shows him trying to establish the land speed record for scalextric cars.
What a job!.......I wonder if he needs an assistant?

We used to have H an O scale train set and slot car track. The object was to see how many times we could have a meeting of train and car!!! Then as I got older, I got envolved in stock cars they where a lot more expensive, and harder to fix when they wrecked!!!

I think this is the place I was talking about -- Electric Replica, located on West 46th Street -- described here as Manahattan's only slot car store. The only thing is that I don't see anything in this article about birthday parties, and the place that I came across was definitely advertising slot car birthday parties.
