I grew up a Ranger fan, but lost interest in the sport after Gretzky retired and they went on strike. These playoffs got me interested again. I'm pulling for both the Devils and the Rangers. Not sure who I'll root for if they play each other. I guess I'll just be happy for whoever wins.
Funny. i have quite a lot of friends abroad (mainly US) and everyone is always only interested in NHL and dont really care for world champs that much, while here in Finland every hockey fan i know goes bloody mental when world champs begin. its a really big deal here.
oi, just for the fun of it. Heres a picture of the party (or one of the parties) that was thrown last year when Finland won the world champs with crushing 6-1 against Sweden. (the fact that it was against our nemesis made it AAAALL so much sweeter) thats how we roll...

There was a time when I was an avid fan of NHL hockey, my avatar is a little misleading, were my favorite team being shown, since 1965 that has been the Green Bay Packers, seen em at Lambeau, Chicago or Milwaukee about 20 times thru the years. But frankly, with each passing year, I have bigger and bigger troubles with football and hockey, in short, its become too damn dangerous, in the case of football too important, and not at all at home with some of the mindset these events draw. Baseball remains my favorite game, sort of trying to force basketball ahead of football and hockey in my brain, have always loved them all. Still can name the 1971 Chicago Blackhawks numbers 2 thru 35 without a break. Starts with defenseman Bill White, ends with goalie Tony Esposito, with stops for the likes of Bobby Hull, 9 and Stan Mikita 21 en route. I know Toews is 91 on the current team, could not name one other jersey number. I think Hossa might be 88 or 77. However Bart Starr is definitely 15. lol. But to these championships, I am guessing them to be amateurs, young guys would explain part of its lack appeal in North America. But the main and truly only reason is staring us right in the face, it appears to run concurrent with the Stanley Cup playoffs, (I believe correctly held to be the pinnacle of hockey)which itself maybe has appeal to 4 per cent of the United States, outshown by things like bowling, maybe even table tennis. One small observation, I will bet without looking that fighting is not allowed in the competition to which you refer. Though I have enjoyed a handful of the bully boys down the years, mainly ones from 40 or more years ago, say, Keith Magnuson or John Ferguson, were I NHL commissioner it is the first thing I would remove. And then I would look for a place to hide in darkest Saskatchewan. Back on the violence aspects, several occurences in the NHL in recent years that truly merited legal action, horrible acts of violence and retribution, often by guys that really are not nuts, pretty good guys. But the NFL. Please. When guys with brass balls and very clear brains, leaders, like Dave Duerson and Junior Seau are putting bullets in their brain I am afraid there is something happening I may not want to know about, but of course should.

The question I have is how can so many Red Wing players - like Datsyuk, Filppula, Zetterberg, Franzen and Jimmy Howard - play so great in the World Championships...
BUT SO TOTALLY SUCK IN THE NHL PLAYOFFS!
And then they're going to blame playing in the World Championships for being tired out when next season comes along. BAH!
And your little sister's immaculate virginity wings away on the bony shoulders of a young horse named George, who stole surreptitiously into her geography revision...

I'm a little late with this, saw the posts and felt the need to run my mouth.
Like Jim's brother, I played hockey as a kid in Greensboro in the '60s. Started in '61, became an all star, won a scholarship, then had to quit at age 17 due to a wrestling injury. I started the Tarheel Adult Hockey Association in NC and resumed my playing in the '90s. I've always been a rabid fan, especially a fan of Olympic and world cup hockey. These championships represent an opportunity for pros to play for their country's national teams just like the Olympics, it's truly great hockey.
I no longer watch or have an interest in the NHL, it's sanctioned violence, I honestly feel that some of it's even staged. Gretzky once stated that hockey will never be the number one sport due to the fighting.

Great true story Ted! My hockey skills were limited to an electronic hockey game that would light up when you scored. Those days in Greensboro, I would practice ice skating with my brother at the Coliseum. I never could figure out how to stop or skate backwards without busting may ass! I eventually played on a football team when I was 13 and 14. My career was very short so I kept my brain intact. Or did I ?

Love this post because in the 60's and 70's hockey, NHL hockey was so important to me. I applaud your using that quote from hockey as regards fighting, while freely admitting I have enjoyed the odd fight down the years. Cannot say I don't find NHL hockey appetizing anymore, that certainly would not be true, yet your post has the ring of authenticity and truth, from a person who clearly knows how beautiful that sport can be.

agh, the fighting in hockey. the reason why im not that interested in NHL either. My dad, the hockey fan, has taught me too well to despise that kinda behaviour in hockey. =P
hehe. only times ive played hockey was in school gym classes (the only thing i actually enjoyed in the Hell called "gym class" along with innebandy.. which is like damn hockey without ice). But it was always quite lame anyways. mainly because everyone were such sissys and you couldnt even tackle anyone (yet i did and got teachers wrath upon me)
and while were still in the championships topic: i am wery disappointed in our team not even winning the damn bronze in the end. Lets just blame the home-ice curse. =P
