Cold Flame is not strictly a Tull tribute band -- they do plenty of their own material -- but they have done strictly Tull shows, I believe, and are quite well known in the U.K. Surprising, then, that there are only a handful videos of them on youtube.

What I like about them is that they do not slavishly imitate every note, rather they do their own interpretations, which are somtimes quite different. Hence, they are really a Tull cover band rather than a tribute band.

Here is a unique rendering of Dun Ringill with added flute and soaring vocals:

And here is a powerful, uptempo New Day Yesterday, which includes some of the hammond organ/flute duels that were included in the long jams of this song that Tull performed in the early seventies. Again, I like how the lead singer changes up the vocals considerably:

Lastly, here is their version of Play in Time, which is more of a straight interpretation, but even here there are a few suprising changes in the attack:

Quite a weird coincidence there, because just after I completed the Cold Flame thread and was looking it over, I noticed that, at the very same time, we were joined by one of band members!

Welcome, partmanpartbeard, and may we have the pleasure of an introduction!

Hi Tull Fans everwhere...yes its me popping on to awash myself in your vast
array of forum topics on the Tull scene.

I am the lead singer/flute of the tull tribute part of the band “Coldflame”.
Coldflame also do classic rock/folk rock and original combination shows up in the north west of the UK..I don't contribute to these and have not worked with them for a while.
The Tull tribute shows stopped a while ago when I was invited to join a professional band
which took up much of my time.As things turn out I am a free agent again and may be looking to Tull things up again soon.

The highlight of my Tull tribute days has to be the Tull convention in Italy in 2005 with Coldflame and many other bands(The Itullians fan base ) A great few days of self indulgance on the subject of Ian and Co.
North West UK Tull Tribute gigs were very much a hit and miss affair...e.g. Some great gigs at the Limelight in Crewe but empty houses in Leeds....seems some management not so keen on the Tull as we musicians.

Still my mind daily returns to the odd Tull classic and find myself 'Wondering aloud' around the house etc.and 'wondering ' why I don't play my flute more often than my guitar....

So I hope to find time to join in your forums a bit...

COLD FLAME 2012...UK Tull tribute band.

A Message to all Tull fans who use this forum from across the pond from the chaps in Cold Flame based here in Blighty..north western England to be precise not too far away from Manchester but far enough to be in the green and moorland of Derbyshire county. As we have been asked not to forget our good friends in the USA here is the first of several posts coming up which hopefully will reintroduce our good selves onto the USA Tull fan base. We hope that you will find our efforts worthy of mention at least on a good day.
With Cold Flame currently in rehearsal for some JT tribute shows in 2012, it is high time we celebrated by starting a brand new thread on what has become an excellent forum dedicated to Jethro Tull in all its increasingly varied forms.
Whilst understanding that there might be those of you on this forum who turn their noses up at pale imitators do consider this. The only reason that Cold Flame play Tull stuff at all is because, whilst Tull material is extremely challenging music to perform live, its such great timeless music and so much fun to play that the end result makes it all worthwhile. Additionally any chance to meet up with fellow Tull fans and wax lyrical or critical about Jethro Tull is a real bonus in itself. So do read on and hopefully we will meet some time fairly soon...probably your place...time to dust down those knee boots again !!!

Best wishes to all fellow Tull fans and friends....Patrick and co.

A short history on how Cold Flame became an occasional Tull tribute band..from 1998 onwards...

Whilst Cold Flame have been around since 1984 it was not until 1998 that any serious consideration was given to performing Tull music as an actual tribute show though some of the early Tull blues tunes like ‘We used to know’ and ‘Some day the sun wont shine for you’ had been performed for some time sans flute. The decision to play more Tull was without doubt influenced by the arrival of flautist Peter Cheetham. Whilst continuing to write, record and perform original material as well as rock and blues standards, Cold Flame set about performing some full scale Jethro Tull tribute shows on a regular basis in some of the premier music venues in the midlands and north of England in which Peter became the focal point. The modicum of success of these shows allowed the band to focus on Jethro Tull tribute shows as a small but vibrant part of the band’s gig calendar and over the years this has been reflected by an increased interest in the band from the media, music promoters and audiences alike. Even when Peter took a sabbatical for a couple of years, the band was able to recruit Derbyshire musician Ben Dalglish who continued the Tull connection with his flute and whistle playing to the fore. When Ben left to pursue other interests, Peter returned and the Flame were able to continue performing as an occasional tribute band specialising in Jethro Tull. Yet it is the enthusiasm and encouragement shown by punters that has been the deciding factor in encouraging Cold Flame to develop this part of their repertoire and this appeal has seen the band performing Tull music in both indoor and outdoor shows in Italy, Austria as well as around the UK. In turn this has led to radio coverage and CD sales in mainland Europe, USA, South America and Australasia. During the last few years the connection with Jethro Tull has been cemented with support slots to both Mick Abrahams Blodwyn Pig and Glen Cornick’s Wild Turkey whilst the band have played with Tull drummers Clive Bunker and Paul Burgess and more recently guest violinist Anna Phoebe who joined the band on stage at The Weyfest Festival in Surrey, England. This must have left a lasting, positive memory for Ms Phoebe who was kind enough to talk about the band in glowing colours during an interview with Classic Rock magazine in 2010.

Today the five piece Cold Flame, still fronted by flautist and multi instrumentalist Peter, are recognized as the premier Jethro Tull tribute act in the Midlands and North of England. During 2012 Cold Flame will be presenting a new two hour plus celebration of classic rock, blues and acoustic material spanning the decades from Jethro Tull’s bluesy beginnings in 1968 right through to the present day demonstrating the wonderful music legacy that Ian Anderson and Jethro Tull have given to the world.

Cold Flame Tull Tribute News - May 2012

A message from across the pond

Fresh from recent concerts including a support slot with Curved Air, Cold Flame are set to return to the tribute trail within the next two weeks. The five piece band featuring singer/flautist Pete Cheetham are currently rehearsing a brand new stage show in preperation for full scale Jethro Tull tribute shows over the next few months which will feature both classic and rare Tull/Ian Anderson material. As always there will be some Pythonesque moments included with the music which is intended, at least on a good night, to capture some of the spirit of Tull in all its many forms.
Several dates have already been confirmed but this is as good an opportunity as any to ask Forum users to add their considerable support and good will both in terms of networking with like minded folk who might live a tad nearer than Boston, Chicago, Pittsburgh or Los Angeles etc etc.. as well as sending us further suggestions on potential venues that might suit the band anywhere in the UK or even more to the point the USA.. The chaps look forward to meeting up with friends old and new in the not too distant future as without your good selves things would just not be the same.

Cold Flame Tull tribute dates so far confirmed include the following with more to be added...more details at www.coldflame.com
Point of interest..the gig at The Robin 2 was originally in late 2011 but has now been switched to May because...Martin Barre's New Day band are playing there in November..ah well that is fair enough..make way for Martin who really should have been on TAAB2 - fine work that it is non the less.

Fri June 1 The Forum, Darlington, County Durham.
Fri July 13 The Yardbirds Club, Grimsby, North Lincolnshire.
Sat Sept 22 The Rockhouse, Eccles, Greater Manchester.
Fri Sept 28 The Jolly Tar, Wardle, Nantwich,Cheshire.
Sat Jan 26 2013 Moses Gate Bolton Lancashire
Thur May 23 2013 Robin 2, Bilston, Wolverhampton.

Be seeing you...Pat and co x

Great covers. I always love it when you can tell tribute bans are just having a lot of fun with the music, rather than worrying about "pulling it off" (which these guys of course do) or looking the same.
