Very interesting post Jeff. I have never heard either have an opinion of the other, feel inadvertently gratified that RT's impression of Ians work is positive, though I presume he wouldn't say otherwise, but I believe him. Having read that it would be sort of a pity if they did not do something together, even a track, (hopefully a cd if RT would do the bother)surely on a track like Ian's bit of Portmeiron for FC I am guessing he was not dictatorial, more likely self effacing, you know, its your show FC. Maybe Ian taking a singing lead on Crazy Man Michael, RT can tackle Mouse Police. I wonder if RT's IA opinions date to then duo bandmate Peggs early day's w Tull, prior to Ian doing much with musicians outside of the nest. MagicJeff, with u after all these years on TAAB, took a look at that guy's TAAB page, totally valid assessment, though maybe not lockstep with my own.

RT is doing some touring around labour day I am seeing him at the Narrows in New bedford MA he id playing Sunday and Monday tickets are 75 but seeing how the venue only seats 250 people it is an awesome place to see a show. I have seen Richie Havens, Martin and Willy Porter there and it is great a place to see a show maybe Ian will go there in Novemeber. But I am so looking foward to seeing Richard Thompson I hav never seen him before and always wanted to.

So I was staying out on Long Island last week, and on Wednesday I saw a blurb in Newsday about Richard Thompson playing at Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center on Sunday (i.e., last night), so I immediately called the theater and reserved two tickets for the show, which sold out a day or two later.
I didn't even realize he was on tour, and hadn't seen him in about ten years, so I was really looking forward to it, and let me tell you, he's as great as ever. He played 21 songs, just him and his acoustic guitar, including two, two-song encores in a show that lasted nearly two hours. He's got to be around the same age as Ian, but unlike Ian he has lost nothing vocally -- if anything I thought his singing was better now than ever -- and his guitar playing is just....miraculous.
The good thing is that this is the very beginning of the U.S tour, so check his website for dates near you, because this is really a can't miss show, especially if you never seen him live before. It doesn't matter either if you don't know his stuff, he is such an incredibly gifted songwriter with so many great songs....in every respect, Ian's peer as a songwriter, lyricist and storyteller.
He's playing again in this area on October 15th, which is a Saturday night at Town Hall in NYC. Paul, this is really not to be missed, so if you and Mary would like to go I will get us the tickets.
Thanks, Ulla, what a great interview about his songwriting process. He's obviously a genius, and I would argue equal to Ian as a songwriter, lyricist and musician.
The show on Sunday was amazing. His singing is still so strong, maybe the best I've ever heard, he's got this rich baritone voice but can instantly switch to falsetto, and he sings the melodies so beautifully.
Here is the setlist from the other night, which was a 110 minute show:

My MGB GT - Richard Thompson
Oh I've got a little car and she might go far She's the mistress of my heart now She's a '65 with an overdrive And I fixed her in every part now Two in the front and two in the back 110 on the old Hog's Back My MGB-GT, she's a runner now MGB-GT Oh my MGB-GT, she's a runner now
Oh I welded the sills and the old floor pan Cut the rust with the torch and the hacksaw Took the Rostyles off, put the spoked wheels on Got a brand new Salisbury axle When I come to town the girls all smile They say "Here's the man with the retro style" My MGB-GT, she's a runner now MGB-GT Oh my MGB-GT, she's a runner now
Lockheed discs and twin SUs Original chrome on the grille now She looks like a dream in her racing green Competition's standing still now I sprayed up her body, I strenghtened the frame I stripped her right down and I built her up again
Now an Alpine's fine if you've got the time And a Healey'll set you back some And a TR4 costs a little bit more But it don't have the same attraction Hard top handy, in case of the weather I don't care if it rains forever In my MGB-GT, she's a runner now MGB-GT In my MGB-GT, she's a runner now MGB-GT In my MGB-GT, she's a runner now
So true, and only the year and colour are different for me.
If anyone comes across a video, I'd be intrested to see it.
Here it is, Pat, the only clip of this song on youtube, from Mirror Blue:
Great song, great album! He's in NYC tomorrow night, and Paul and I are taking the ladies.
Jeff, how was the show. I missed his stop in my area this time around
It was great, Charlie, the venue was very small (about 300-400), and he played 22 songs, completely solo, with no band, except that when he plays guitar it often sounds like there are two or three guitarists!
It was totally unexpected, too, because we were out on Long Island that week (last week of August, through Labor Day weekend) and I had no idea he was even playing out there until I saw this little blurb in the newspaper a few days before the show. It was only a half hour drive from where we were staying, so there was no way I was going to miss that show, since I hadn't seen him in about ten years. Paul and I are going to see him tonight, with the wives, at Town Hall in NYC!

Breaking news!
I have just learned that Richard Thompson will be playing an all-request show (he does those every so often) at The City Winery (!) in February.
He was so great the last few times I've seen him in August at the Westhampton PAC, and just a few weeks ago at Town Hall in NYC, that I vowed I would never miss any shows in this area, so I will be there for that!
Paul, what say you? And Blue.....perhaps you would be interested?
