Gordobn Lightfoot
Ballad Of Yarmouth Castle

Well, it's four o'clock in the afternoon
And the anchors have been weighed
From Miami to Nassau
She's bound across the waves

She'll be headin' south through Biscayne Bay
Into the open sea
Yarmouth Castle, she's a-dyin' and don't know it

Now the many years she's been to sea
She's seen the better times
She gives a groan of protest
As they cast away her lines

And the grumble of her engines
And the rust along her spine
Tells the Castle she's too old to be sailin'

But the sands run out within her heart
A tiny spark glows red
It smolders through the evening
There's laughter overhead

Now the dinner's served and the cards are dealt
And the drinks are passed around
Deep within the fire starts a-burnin'

Now it's midnight on the open sea
And the moon is shinin' bright
Some people join the party
And others say goodnight

There's many who are sleepin' now
It's been a busy day
And a tiny wisp of smoke is a-risin'

"Oh Lord," she groans, "I'm burning
Let someone understand"
But her silent plea is wasted
In the playin' of the band

Everybody's dancin' on her deck
And they're havin' such a time
And a voice says, "Shut up and deal, I'm losin'"

Deep within the Yarmouth Castle
The fire begins to glow
It leaps into the hallways
And climbs and twists and grows

And the paint she wore to keep her young
Oh Lord, how well it burns
And soon that old fire is a-ragin'

Up beneath the bridge it's climbin' fast
The captain stands aloft
He calls up to the boatswain, says
"Boatswain, we are lost"

For the ragged hoses in the racks
No pressure do they hold
And the people down below will soon be dyin'

All amidships, oh she's blazin' now
It's spreadin' fore and aft
The people are a-scramblin'
As the fire blocks their path

The evil smoke surrounds them
And they're fallin' in their tracks
And the captain in his lifeboat is a-leavin'

Oh then the ship, Bahama Star
Comes steamin' through the night
She sees the Castle blazin'
And 'tis a terrible sight

"Jump down, jump down", the captain cries
"We'll save you if we can"
Then the paint on his funnels is a-fryin'

"God help the ones who sleep below
And cannot find the way
Thank God for those we rescue
Upon this awful day"

Now the heroes, they are many
But the times are growin' slim
And now from stern to bow, she's a-blazin'

Oh the Yarmouth Castle's moanin'
She's cryin' like a child
You can hear her if you listen
Above the roar so wild

Is she cryin' for the ones who lie
Within her molten sides?
Or cryin' for herself, I'm a-wonderin'

But the livin' soon were rescued
The ones who lived to tell
From the Star they watched her
As she died there in the swells

Like a toy ship on a mill pond
She burned all through the night
Then slipped beneath the waves in the mornin'

The Ghost Of Cape Horn

All around old Cape Horn
Ships of the line, ships of the morn
Some who wish they'd never been born
They are the ghosts of Cape Horn

The Sea Of Tranquility

I live in the light of the bright silver moon
I'll take you off sailing from midnight till noon
I'll show the Sea of Tranquility
You can have any flavor you happen see

Sail Away - Deep Purple

If you're driftin' on an empty ocean
with no wind to fill your sail,

the future, your horizon,
it's like searchin' for
the Holy Grail.
You feel there's no tomorrow
as you look into the water below.
It's only your reflection
and you still ain't got
no place to go.

Agreed Serge.. I've spun this vinyl many times since around high school.. Haven't heard this one in many years so it was nice this thread reminded me of it. This song could fit in with the windy category as well.

Glad to know it, Erin. :P

Jimi Hendrix - Ships Passing Through The Night (from his last release, Valleys of Neptune)

All I got for you is me
So darlin' can't you see
We'll make love all through the night
Make love all through the night

Lay your troubles down on the chair
You've got to shake those blues right out your hair

I'm just a lonesome ship passing through the night
I'm just a lonesome bird flyin' makin' a midnight flight

Reportedly list updated ;D

Down To The Dolce Vita - Peter Gabriel

'Hey Mac, see you down the Dolce Vita!
'Get back, we don't have time
'Cos I hear we're sending off the heroes
When the year goes, they're out of the bay,
Trying to find a way
to make it alive'

'So long' said four men to their families,
be strong 'til we get back home.
And if not, take care of all the children
Until then just hope and pray
We're gonna find a way
to make it alive'

'You guys are crazy'

They shout and then we leave the harbour.
In doubt, they're acting wierd
And the sea is whipping up a welcome

If hell come we're all easy prey,
Trying to find a way
to make it alive'

'You guys are crazy'

The captain's hand shook for the guys to get in place
He said, 'Let's look behind your face.'
With each corner covered, they were all around
Waiting for the midnight bell to sound
'Out of sight," cried Aeron through his glasses
'Don't fight' said Gorham's smile,
all the while his hand was on my shoulder,
I was scared of being easy prey,
Trying to find a way
to make it alive'.
I wont be easy prey,
gonna find a way to make it alive

What a wonderful album which stands out within my top fav. ::)

Serge, I definitely agree about Peter Gabriel's debut release (Car). Extraordinary album!

Here's a few more:

Underneath the moonlight
Together we'll sail across the sea
Reminiscing every night

Excellent all your finds, Greg, in particular The Pogues' songs. Thanks. :P
All songs updated.

Cleaned a lot of plates in Memphis
Pumped a lot of pain down in New Orleans
But I never saw the good side of the city
Until I hitched a ride on a river boat queen

Big wheel, keep on turning
Proud Mary, keep on burning
Rolling, rolling, rolling on the river

As for the next April topic, the point is going on being an under cover riddle, what will it may be? what will it might have-beens? ;D Who will the virtuoso be at commencing that good ride ?

For the present, more ships numbers
Meat Loaf - Sailor To A Siren

Tim Buckley - Song To The Siren

Long afloat on shipless oceans
I did all my best to smile
'Til your singing eyes and fingers
Drew me loving to your isle
And you sang
Sail to me, sail to me
Let me enfold you
Here I am, here I am
Waiting to hold you

156 songs posted so far, all updated on the list. Salut

April showers bring May flowers, as the old saying goes; therefore, I suggest "rain" be the topic. There are a million rain songs.

P.S. And I came up with about 50 just off the top of my head.

Greg's April suggestion has been settled by a wide bulk of us as "RAIN", another far extensive and fascinating subject which will be found easily on a great mass of lyrics songs of our likes. Thanks for your help, Greg. :P. Now The Game Must Go On, come on sisters & brothers!!, don't be shy and let the rain pouring down in April :-/

In the meantime ships keep boatin'

Midlake. Winter Dies.

As the winter dies the Earth is brought to life
And a thousand merchant ships sail to find
A worthy village to land and start again.
