Okay, a new game for us to play, but this time in poll form.
This one will be based on styles as well as themes. You may pick only 1 track, and please comment on why you selected that track below.
I've left a "Other" selection for those of you whose favorite track I omitted. Just check that box and write it in below with your comments and I will add to the poll.
I'll be adding new polls in the coming weeks so check back for more!
In the end perhaps we can pit the winners of each category against each other to determine (once and for all) the best Jethro Tull song of all time.

Best in Blues? Why it HAS to be "Someday...".
No drums, mouth harp, guitar and vox. It just conjures a picture of a lazy afternoon with two dudes on a porch (there's a dog in there somewhere too...maybe a cat, for Ian, watching some flies buzz around) belting out the blues for the simple enjoyment of belting out the blues.

I like My Sunday Feeling much better than Someday the Sun Won't Shine for You. Never liked that one very much and I especially don't like hearing it live at each and every tour over the last several years.

I'm surprised that "A New Day Yesterday " did not get more votes. The bass line is complex (I'm a Bass player too) and a lot of fun to play. But hey all the songs choices for the poll were great songs, "A New Day" was just this Tull fan's favorite !

Surely the outro of Back to the Family, when the drums roll and the bass thunders, peppered by the magic flute before Martin's sublime guitar drifts in is the reason music was invented... isn't it?

I fully agree, MP! That's one of my favorite Tull songs ever. I think Back to the Family, Minstrel in the Gallery and Dangerous Veils are the three hardest rocking Tull songs in the entire catalogue.

1969 - World, meet Martin Barre, Jethro Tull's new guitarist. Stand Up's 'Back To The Family' (my pick), 'We Used To Know' and 'For A Thousand Mothers' carried on the Rock/Blues/'jazz'? fusion from This Was. I care more for the hard rock edge that JT has always carried forward. Whether the guitar is contrasting the 'blues, jazz, acoustic' Jethro Tull signature sound, I love to hear Martin cut loose. This wasn't easy explaining my reason for picking the 'best blues' song - I love the hard edge rock of Tull nudging against the quiet acoustic sound. Martin also filled the bill for required flautist. I'm going to stop now, I'm digging in deep.

Though it is true that Someday is a bit ubiquitous on tours these days.
But, the question was about the BEST Blues song, and not about the FAVORITE Blues song. So in keeping with that, I had to go with Someday.
My own little two cents is that a tradition of the Blues is also to have a twist in the tale. There is a punchline at the end of Someday, and that is definitely in keeping with the Blues.

I've been thinking about this thread and that I should have allowed members to pick their top 3 songs instead of just one.

That's a good analysis, especially your remark about the twist at the end.
I voted my favorite song, Back to the Family, which is more of a blues-based rock song, rather than Someday the Sun Won't Shine, which is more of a straight blues number, and I guess since the poll called for "best blues song" that one really is the best choice, although not one of my favorites either. But I'm still not changing my vote.

Yo all. I don't really consider Tull a blues band in the true sense. Not like someone Clapton or early fleetwood mac. They were always abit more progressive and nearly jazz on this was. I've always liked the drive and feel beggars farm from that album. But I could have voted voted for any on the list. Except Monday and blues instrumental. Don't care for them really.

Odd though it may seem, although I consider myself a very big fan of Tull (I've consistently listened to their music more than any other artist for the past 20 years) I don't like blues and I wouldn't say that I particulalry like any of the songs above. A New Day Yesterday I can enjoy at times but it isn't a favourite of mine by any stretch. I think I also saw something where Nothing is Easy came top of a "favourite Tull song" poll, which I thought was astonishing, personally.
