I can understand fans feeling sad/annoyed at Martin's absence but - looking at things without sentiment - in more recent times at least - did Martin really have a big impact on the quality of the material? Consider; for many fans, Ian's Secret language of Birds would rate far higher than Dot.Com (and, going back a bit, Walk into Light superior to Under Wraps). Each to their own, but I personally don't believe that the excellent TAAB2 would be an even better album if Martin had played on it instead of Florian and it was sad and childishly petulant that the guy next to me in Glasgow last night felt he had to shout out "Martin Barre!" when Florian was taking his bow at the end of the show.

That was bush. Florian doesn't deserve that. He's a very nice guy and an excellent guitar player.

But to answer your question - yes, I do think Martin would have made a difference. While I think Florian did a fine job on TAAB2, Martin brings more to the table.

Martin's guitar simply has more soul than Florian's, and Martin has that unique ability to "answer" Ian's vocal or flute lines like no other.

This is not a knock on Florian, it's simply a difference in style which I and many others happen to appreciate.

edit-

One more thing - I believe the mixing of this album is much better, and more favorable for the guitar player. Ian began mixing his flute way too high on recent albums which over-shadowed the guitar and detracted from the overall sound.

+1 Totally agreed

Nags (Florian?) you can call me whatever you like if it makes you feel good. I don't really need or want to debate this with you anyway. It's pointless. I may get a little passionate sometimes about the music but I won't be getting into cyber pissing matches, or name calling with virtual Tull fans. I like to think that if we had a discussion in person you wouldn't start calling me an idiot. Maybe i'm wrong? Think whatever you want about my opinions though.

Tulltapes, let's be clear, I WAS NOT CALLING YOU AN IDIOT, I was calling "Brickhouse" (housebrick) an idiot.

I agree that you and I would have more in common around Tull than differences, I just think this sentimental view of Martin is emotional, and takes away from the focus on TAAB2, the best output from that camp in a long time.

I do believe that Barre is acting like a baby and mishandled this thing with the way he came out talking about Tull, and his childish shots, especially when he knew TAAB2 was coming.

Again, I am sorry if I was misunderstood, do not feel you are an idiot, a worthy opponent in a health debate. "Brickhouse, well my opinion stands.

Cambridge Rock Festival: spring preview
http://www.cambridge-news.co.uk/Whats-on....ew-19042012.htm
Jethro Tull fans will know Martin Barre, who has played guitar on virtually every Jethro Tull album. His band will be playing from the heavier end of Jethro Tull’s back catalogue this weekend.

I have just read this entire thread and wanted to say just one thing - alright, a couple of things: I attended hundreds of concerts in the 70s and saw all of the guitar heroes (except for Hendrix). In all that time I never saw a more exciting live player than Martin Barre. We could argue technical details about playing ability, but to me Martin was the best. If you saw the original TAAB tour you know what I mean. A week after that show I saw Led Zeppelin (June 1972) and thought Page was completely eclipsed by Barre.

I would love to have seen Barrie and Martin join the TAAB2 tour, I think it would have made a really positive difference. Of course John Evan had a huge presence in the original, but neither he nor Jeffrey are playing music anymore.

Page brilliant in the studio ,live he was probably pissed and his live playing didnt capture what he was really capable of.
But agreed Martin Barre has the X factor that many many more technical /faster just dont have.
He plays with feel, passion and tone ,3 ingredients that make a great great guitar player.
Florian has Speed and ??????????
