 Q&A with David Coursey!
« Thread Started on Dec 3, 2010, 11:25am »

Okay folks, the man whose job we all covet ;) has agreed to take our questions and we are very thankful.

For those of you who may not be aware, Dave is the Official Webmaster for Jethro Tull. In addition to creating and maintaining Tull's official web page, Dave also runs Facebook and Twitter.

So if anyone would like a little behind the scenes look into Tull from cyber space, Dave is the man to talk to!

Hi Dave,
How involved does Ian get in the technical aspects of the website? Does he just want to see the end product or does he show any interest in the details.
Thanks,
Dave - Maryland, USA

Hi David

What was the story with the scrapping of the official discussion board? We were just about to elect moderators if I recall which would have kept things in order.

Also, you mentioned some time ago that you had some photos of Ian's studio, any chance we can have a little piece on Ian's studio(s) and his working methods when recording?

And finally, do you get much personal input to the site content or do you just implement Ian's ideas?

Hi, Dave, two questions:

1) What is the story behind how you became involved with Ian and Tull? Were you well-known to the band prior to the internet-era? Had you worked for Ian in the past? How did it all come about?

2) What's the story with the plugs on your FB page for discounted organic produce, reduced bank interest rates and buy-one, get-one free deals from TGI Fridays? ??? I popped over there to say Merry Christmas to you from The Jethro Tull Board and thought that you had suffered a spam attack!

Hello Dave,

Do you have any suspicion that Ian is really a lizard alien come to prophesize the apocalypse? And if so, would you really answer the question honestly, since you are so obviously in on the whole thing?

Hi David, me again.

I got to agree with James/Tullite. I saw Tull play just over a week ago and the one thing it reminded me was how magical the band are. The current sites CNN look (i'm sure that was your brief from Ian) really doesn't represent the band. There is virtually nothing about the bands past and hey days.

Hello David,
On the official website I loved the hi-resolution photos. I wonder why the band photos are unchanged after so long? Also, why not a hi-res photo of Florian Opahle or any recent drummers on Ian's tour like Scott Hammond?

Why did you get rid of the Tull Chat room with no warning? I quite enjoyed it.

We can ask, but Chris only really worked Tull's live sound and didn't join with them until the Brick. The person who would know would be Steven Wilson since he just remixed all the original tracks. He recently answered a question (guitar player magazine) that i've been wondering my whole life. What makes that real gritty distorted sound on Cross Eyed Mary... ???

If the question is about the voice "arhuuu" at the beginning of CEM I have always believed it was Jeffery as he was credited with odd voices and from the beginning on stage this also was preceded by his elaborate introduction and he would then yell "mary". Even after Jefferey left the band all the bass players were assigned yelling Mary with varying degrees of success. If the question is about instrumentation at the intro we hear the infamous Mellotron along with the flute. I always loved that sound.
On stage it was piano and as it progressed Martin would turn is volume down, strum a chord and bring up the volume, making that distorted chord "surge" sound. and as with everything
I could be wrong though

Any further word if it was a Mellotron on piano, or something else?
