"A New Day" cover art « Thread Started on Aug 3, 2010, 7:53am »
No article about Tull related artwork would be complete without illustrating it with some of the nice pieces of work from the artists who contributed to the covers of AND.
Dave Rees has kindly given his permission for us to reproduce the covers here. So, over time, I'll add some of the ones that I have around, but if anyone else wants to pitch in, please fell free to add.

To kick it off here are the first two covers, the first used an illustrated typeface. Issue 2 was the first to use a piece of submitted artwork.
Note and update: I came to AND a few months late, missing the first 4 or five copies. Dave Rees kindly sent out back-issues, but I am reliably informed by a friend that some of the early issue reprints were not quite the same as the originals. Issue 2 was one such issue. The copy below is a reprint version and is minus the background image.

I'd forgotten how difficult it was to get the last couple of AND's into their binders originally, it's even more difficult to remove them and put them back.
Now, more than ever, The Jethro Tull Board kicks ass!

I love this thread, Pat, because there were so much great artwork on the covers of AND. Great idea to ask Dave Rees for his okay, and many thanks to him on that! How come he's not here yet, though? Or is he?
I subscribed continuously for a good ten, twelve years from the late 80's onward, but haven't gotten them recently. I still have them, so if you are missing any let me know and I could put some of them up here too.

Issues 3, 4 and 5 followed in the same vein as issue 1, with an illustrated typeface. Although issue 5 had a background photo of Ian, PJV, Peggy and Martin at a mixer desk behind the logo.
These three issues did have artwork inside though.

Hi, my girlfriend noticed my name on this sight so I thought I'd put my oar in! I'm Russell Horsfield and it was good to see the nice comments about my artwork I did way back in the past. It's great to be linked in any small way to such a wonderful band as Tull. If anyones interested they can see my current artwork (and buy prints!) by going to the deviantart web site and looking for ruffianshall. You can also check out my online portfolio http://ruffianshall.artworkfolio.com If you want to contact me about artwork, ruffianshall@gmail.com I still have the original artwork for 'spare a bob' and Ian's face!

Russell,
Thanks for getting in touch and joining. Welcome aboard.
I hope you didn't mind us exhibiting your work here.
Please feel free to use this site as a way of showing off your skills as well as delving into all things Tull and more. It'll be great if you fancied getting involved in a few of the threads we have going, especially the current Q & A's.
I'm on deviant as well, so I'll pop over in a while and have a look at your work.
Russell, just tired to search for ruffianshall on deviant and couldn't locate anything, do you have a link?

Hi Russell,
Got it! Nice work. What prompted the change into more illustration and surreal/fantasy work?

Back on track, I hope, some of my early copies of AND are re-prints issued by Dave Rees due to overwhelming popular demand so I may have a couple with the front cover minus any background image as per my issue 2. So, if you have a different cover to one of mine, do us a favour and get it up here for us all to marvel at.
Essentially not a lot of artwork appeared in issues 5 though 8, then on Issue 9 we had a nice piece by Richard Kennedy, which looks like an extract of one of his larger pieces.
Not a great scan I will add a better one of this soon, I'll tidy it up and re-post it.

Issue 10 simply carried a press/publicity photo of the band from the 'This Was' era.
I presume that due to some pretty substantial interviws with Mick A, Clive B and Ian there wasn't much in the way of artwork inside issues 10 or 11, although issue 11 did have a cover done by one Robert Sadler.

Issue 12 was in the same vein, no artwork inside but a cover piece credtied to Bernard Matthews
Issue 13 and onwards seemed to draw greater attention in terms of fan-art, so it looks like I'll be slaving away over a hot scanner for a little while soon.
