Really good show at Buxton tonight ..much better than shrewsbury.... Just trying to be and Slipstream dropped in favour of Mother goose Ian very relaxed and talkative ...voice much better . band really tight and gave it all ..standing ovation received by warm and appreciative crowd Preston Great to hear it. I think the problem with the union chapel gig I went to was more likely linked to poor acoustics in the upper part of the venue a d the constant talking, whooping and general mutterings by the bunch of 50-60 year olds behind us. The sound may have been better downstairs, but not much fun for Mrs Q who would have been looking at the back of someone's head all night. Sometimes some people think that a bad comment on a gig is down to perception ofa poor performance, sometimes it's simply due to the environment around you.

After hearing the September 4 show, Ian's voice sounds very tired. I my opinion the show does not work as trio, to many "empty spots" where drums and bass should be. It just does not sound right. With that said Ian, Florian and Dave are musical strong as always. The song selection is very similar to Ian shows in 2010. I think his best performance was on A Change of Horses. here is the set list Boris Dancing Just Trying To Be Slipstream Up To Me Set Aside Overture Wondering Again Andantino Hare In The Winecup Bach's Prelude in C Major Bouree Set 2 Up The Pool The Hare Who Lost His Spectacles Thick As A Brick (The Poet & The Painter Sequence) Adrift And Dumbfounded A Change Of Horses Bach's Toccata And Fugue Budapest Aqualung Locomotive Breath Pretty much the same set played at Gateshead on Monday 19th but Just Trying to Be/Slipstream replaced by Mother Goose. Anderson's voice was better than I was expecting. Jon

Just back from Burnley...stunning show....absolutely the best of the three I saw.
Crowd totally appreciative.......Anderson in best voice of the tour........very relaxed banter superb atmosphere.
The music .....the trio have grown musically during the tour and have really gelled...this format alows all to showcase what they do best.......but also can highlight weaknesses eg use of keyboard drum samples .......Ians voice ......
but I really enjoyed this show

I think that in looking back at the Union Chapel gig I share the same concerns as yourself; keyboard sampling to fill the gaps, and IMO maybe less of that would have made it more an 'honest' trio sound, rather than a trio trying sound like a quintet. I have less of a worry about Ian's voice these days, it is ocassionally variable, as we all know, but I think he is aware of it and does try to compensate as best he can. I can't knock him too much, at least he gets up off his arse and dons the minstrel gear for regular outings. Maybe I'm getting too old as well, I get all too easily pissed off by 'fans' who constantly talk, whoop and yell during the music and spoken parts gigs, it's turning into a major bugbear for me. A friend who was sitting downstairs at the gig told me that a group around him ruined the gig for him with their constant attempts to try and banter with Ian from the stalls, for their 15 seconds of fame and to let those around them think they were part of the entourage. I'm looking forward to the TaaB shows now, there's a growing acceptance of the position with Martin, although again IMO, not it's not an entirely palatable way of doing business. As Dave Rees said, if it's the end of the band/relationship then it would have been a nicer and more fitting end to a splendid careeer as a band if we, the fans, knew about it and had the opportunity to have shown our full appreciation to Martin in the best setting possible and that would have been at a Tull gig. Finally, been tied up on a few things lately, but will have a listen to Rob's stuff next week and catch up then.

I consider myself quite lucky too, as both the Hayes show and the Camberley show were not only as good as they get, but had the guest star as well. Contemplating Avatars ... Pam

Thanks Quizz
I think you are right ...about noise it can really destroy the show...the atmosphere at both Buxton and Burnley was relaxed yet respectful......no conversations going on during playing and very few smart arse remarks from the audience during Ians banter
Anyway the tour has sort of brought me back to Tull ....I was really inspired by the Burnley show..it really was quite superb and am looking forward to the TAAB tour

i saw the show at the Sage gateshead and york grand opera house. both were excellent, but the Sage venue was superb, hall two is a 360 degree audience and i think IA really enjoyed the gig. the audience was very responsive and appreciative from the off, and there was no chattering, which was great!

Honest review of the Gloucester gig can be found here www.dprp.net/concrev/2011_iananderson_1.phpThe reviewer was quite correct about Ians voice on Just trying to be & Slipstream I agree..... they were almost painful to listen to at Shrewsbury it was no suprise they were soon dropped from the set
