More hard earned cash pissed away waiting for a new album.
I'll probably break down and buy it for, 'Living In These Hard Times' alone.
Sure, he can crank this stuff out but I can't see where he can't be motivated to record a new album.
Surely, it would return some profit, even if it didn't sell like in their heyday.
He must be able to see the enthusiasm from the crowd on the new songs being played.

So EMI has decided to squeeze Tull fans for another $10 to get their hands on St. Brides. That's great.  While I might have bought the St. Brides if it was packaged alone, I don't see myself buying this. What do I need Another Christmas Album for? Uh oh. I just gave somebody an awful idea. |

I myself have never bought the Christmas Album, so I'll most likely get it. Especially since winter is approaching. But as far as releasing it with an album that a lot of people most likely already have, it just seems like it's record business. Releasing the more expensive version of a christmas album by a somewhat well known "classic rock" band is usually gonna bring in some profit.

I'm not at all enthralled by the St. Brides release. In fact any live album from recent years is only going to disappoint. I remember Ian in an interview back in the late 70's saying that there comes a time when you gotta know when to stop. I'm not saying I want Ian to stop but its one thing hearing him murder the Tull catalogue live with his bad singing but quite another to sell recordings of it. Perhaps I'm being too harsh considering I've not even heard it but judging by the other recent live things and youtube I'd be willing to bet this would be a cringing painful listen.
Now, I'd much rather Ian put out only studio recordings of his current vocal abilities. At least he can take more time and record on his best days and also the new material would fit his current vocal range. Instead, leave the live recordings to the still under exploited Tull hey days.

I agree with you, Mix....up to a point. A new studio album should take definitely precedence over any further live recordings of recent shows, for the reasons you mentioned. The singing on Little Light Music was not very strong, even with the overdubbing, and although his voice was somewhat better on Living With the Past, I did not purchase Live at Montreau because it was too close in time to LWTP and a very similar set list, and I feared, the type of singing you describe. However, the St. Bride's release is so unique, so different (recorded in a beautiful church around Christmas time), that it warrants being released, especially because it is the type of quieter music that Ian probably sang pretty well. His singing in general has been much improved the last two tours that I saw (40th Anniv. in 2008, and the current one), and has left me looking forward to future tours! Jeff |

Montreau was the only Jethro Tull release I never purchased, because it came out only a few years after LWTP and seemed like a similar set list. Also I was seeing a ton of shows between 2000 and 2007 (including some where the vocals were not very strong) so I didn't feel like I needed yet another live DVD/CD from that period. Also, I don't like overdubbed or dubbed-in vocals on a live recording, because that seems rather fake to me, and Ian has done that in the past, particularly on Little Light Music. Does he also do that on Montreau? How is his singing on that DVD/CD? Maybe I'll still get it. What did you think of it, Michele?

While Ian's singing has not been very satisfactory at all, Ian's playing, along with the rest of the band, has been top-notch--in my opinion, the best it ever has been.
By the way, does anyone know if Ian has ever acknowledged the problem with his voice in any sort of interview? I have never heard him refer to it.

Hi, Chea. I would say I know a lot about Tull, as they are leagues ahead of my second favorite band and nothing compares to them in my book. But I certainly don't purport to know everything. Aside from an outline of their history, I'm somewhat weak on all of the details. I also only know about 70 to 75% of the lyrics by heart, and I've "only" seen 75-80 shows, whereas there are Tull fans who have seen 100, 150 and even 200+. I also don't own the IA plus an Orchestra Plays Jethro Tull, because again, it was much of the same songs being played, and because I already have that old Classic Case CD where Tull plays with an orchestra. With Montreaux, it came out only a year or two after LWTP, and it was a show from pretty much the same period, so I didn't feel the need to rush out and buy it. That doesn't mean that I won't eventually pick it up, especially now since you have recommended it. Maybe when I see it somewhere for ten bucks. Jeff |

You are worldwide known as a great J.T fan,considered the engagement in this Forum,and the good iob,too. Some friends of mine are offen kidding me about my 30 J.T shows i'seen.I'm very glad to learn someone did much better than me with more than 150 presences.

I for one will not buy this album. Milking the old Tull-cow again and again....
I have all Tull albums except MU 1 & 2, for obvious reasons.
As for a true Tull album: there is enough on the shelve, as Doane told me. But old Scottish scroogy Ian won't release it because all the world will download it in a month....
What a pity.

I'll ring the doorbell asking for alms for poor cats...and jeff and paul can pop into the studio and grab the masters of new stuff....the rest of you can help with airfare, legal and medical help, as needed...

Hi, Michele, I don't have it because I already own two versions of the Christmas album, the original one and then the 2004 edition that included a DVD with excerpts from Living With the Past. I am not sure that I want to drop seventeen bucks or so on yet another edition of the Christmas album, but I guess the question that I have is: Is that second disc of the St. Brides Church gig really worth it? Jeff P.S. Last night I started viewing the disc of the Itullian convention and was amazed at how many performances there were by different tribute bands, followed by Ian and various other members of Tull. But because it was late I did not have time to view the entire thing straight through, so I was jumping ahead, just sampling the different acts. But I am going to give the whole thing a thorough viewing, although maybe not all at once! (A little strange seeing Mick play and sing on stage, knowing now what has just happened to him.) |

I probably will get the "new" Christmas album because I am curious about the St. Brides disc. But I guess Ian felt it wasn't enough as a stand-alone disc and that is why it is packaged with the Christmas album. I saw the male and female tribute duo, as they were the first to perform and thought they were pretty good. The others I sampled seemed good too. I have to watch the entire disc straight through at my computer, because the DVD player I have hooked up to my television won't read the disc. I hope your wife recovers. Sounds like a pretty bad fracture. I'm guessing she must have had surgery with hardware put in. Jeff |
