Some thoughts about this show
Another great night of music , but not as good as Sheffield.
Wonderful theatre .. I found the atmosphere created by the decor quite inspiring
The show was marred by many glitches...whilst I did not notice any mistakes at Sheffield this performance was littered with them.
Including
Ian on entrance knocking the microphone stand making a booming noise
Getting the lyrics in the opening section of brick mixed up
John O' Hara getting it totally wrong ..just before the curled your toes in fun section..almost for a brief moment was an almighty train wreck ..but the band showed what great players they are by adjusting quickly
Major technical issues with the accordion ( some might see it as a blessing)
John was not able to use it as it was intended in pebbles instrumental
Ryan O' Donnell numerous mistakes
( after one particular withering look from the headmaster .....'Learn your lines boy' me thinks young Ryan may be doing a detention ....copying out 200 times 'In future I must remember all my cues and learn my lines' )
Well what the hell it is a live show after all
I guess that this is not suprising given the nature of the show and complexity of the music. I dont feel the audience noticed the majority of them and it certainly didnt appear to detract from their enjoyment.
The star of the night was Florian he supported the music throughout and his ensemble playing was fantastic. His solo slots whilst impressive did not have the same X quality as his licks in Sheffield.
The format of the show generally works but having spoken to quite a few fans some common concerns have been voiced
I think that Ian will really struggle to continue this over a long tour ..the band and Ian in particular looked knackered..the quick changes between instruments and sections inducing obvious anxiety amongst the players.( I was on the second row with a perfect view of all)
I can envisage even more vocal duties being handed over to Ryan.
Strangely I found TAAB 2 to be the stronger of the two halfs in this show ..I held the opposite view at Sheffield.
The lack of an encore is a real issue ...once again the patrons were left bewildered as the house lights went up. I have no problem with this ..but it leaves a sterile unfullfilled feel to the concert.
Ians choice of using 'Tufty' to introduce the band and particularly himself at the end is probably not the best way to end the show.
I can understand and appreciate the theatrical concept and why it has been devised. However, I think the audience would have appreciated some personal statements from Ian. His lack of a personal cheerio was at odds with the audience rapport and banter which Ian is known for and it felt strange.
Positives
Two hours of glorious music in a wonderful setting
I loved it. Rob was buzzing about it for the whole two hour drive back to Manchester .
Negatives
A gremlin was in the house
Now onwards to Manchester
