GOD, it’s jethro dull! There was a time when a particular kind of human would revel in the music of Jethro Tull, the 70s Brit prog rock band that was (supposedly) a parody of a 70s Brit prog rock band. With Ian Anderson and his lip-o-suction flute, this hairy lot appealed to a university crowd familiar with the fact that Jethro Tull was a 17th century English agriculturalist. It turns out that Anderson (and his blasting flute) has crossed over to the 21st century. His latest project: a ‘sequel’ to Tull’s much ‘respected’ 1972 album, Thick As A Brick (TAAB). If TAAB now is seen as a handicraft curio from the Proterozoic era, TAAB2 (which has Anderson alone doing the cooking) is a no-holds-barred boredom-inducing personal extravagance. Tracks such as ‘Power and spirit/ Give till it hurts’, ‘Upper sixth loan shark/Banker bets, banker wins’ and ‘A change of horses’ (that should be on a Robin Hood soundtrack and nowhere else) are supposed to be clever. But with all its huffing and puffing and classic rock poses, I’d rather go with Mama Mia: The Musical. It’s official then: Anderson on this album is my personal Anglo-Saxon Cacofonix. And the worst album cover award goes to... www.hindustantimes.com/Entertainment/Music/Superheavy-power/Article1-857947.aspx

The exception proves the rule, right? ;D
No, seriously, there are indeed some negative reviews. In the "Progarchives" forum there is some serious bashing going on. The drums sound terrible, Ian can't sing anymore, it sounds like a Broadway musical, the music isn't complex the least bit etc.
You know what? I don't care. All I need to have is my own personal opinion and I love the album. And I even think that it's a great album in comparison with TAAB1. Yup, I do.

I'm not agreeing with the review, but you've got to admit it is funny. ;D Having read it front to back I admit nothing of the sort, insidious, ill informed, certainly. Funny, not remotely. Now seeing IA referred to as a "swivel eyed little turd", followed by something along the lines of, "Is he still about then, I shall give him a good slagging then," roughly 20 years ago. Now that I did kind of enjoy, though not nearly so much as I would seeing him offer such an observation to the man's face. I did craft a response under the heading of Moron with a Megaphone, not surprisingly they have not printed this retort. If you want to shoot down Ian be my guest, but at least have a new take on the attack. Jethro Dull? Seriously, that's all you got. And that coming from the seriously addled brain of Jimmy Page, and their bluto manager. Man what I love to have seen that guy, (who allegedly pulled a man's eye's out in prison)try that shit in Chicago that he pulled on Bill Graham's boys out in the Bay Area. He would learn what all bad asses learn eventually. There always is someone badder. That commentary was connected with Tull selling out 4 or 5 nights at the LA Forum, as if audiences of that size are any mark of credibility. Lady Gaga or indeed Led Zeppelin at 2000 bucks a pop anyone? And of course with their stable of whores and official Led Zeppelin jet. Wow you guys must be real rock stars. Hammer of the Gods I am told, turns out that was way wrong. Another band that I enjoyed in part, but who history has seen to deify far beyond their actual contribution. Fuck off Jimmy Page and believe me I would say it to your face one on one, just you and me, no bluto boys for protection, and no limousine to jump into, or official Led Zeppelin rock star jet. And I would see to it that you found out what became of Ian's great coat in Chicago, the Zeps were pissed because Tull had just stolen their thunder at the Aragon, I know, I have friends who were there. But yeah you and the Sabs are a tight fit for this climate, ya'll won big time, the morons are in possession of the ball, I for one am enjoying this mighty de evolution. Them cows are comin on home.

Hmmm...you got all that out of a 2 paragraph review, did you? I have heard of reading between the lines, but this is reading between periods, commas, semi-colons and asterisks. It seems you are attacking Led Zep (a very fine band, by the way) with the same sarcasm and insults you decry from the reviewer. Et tu Ray? ;D

Your totally right Mo. One of those posts I would retract if it did not foul up the flow of the discussion, its there, so I will leave it there, especially after a response. Believe it or not I still like alot of Zeppelin ALOT, not a little. Plain truth each of their places in the line of appreciation, Tull and Zep, have for decades rendered my a very bitter Tull fan at times. So....caught in the act.

It's an interesting read. But man, I wish you would use paragraphs! I know Jeff! I think they briefly considered banning me over at Talk Awhile, (to those who don't know that fun one, its a sort of Fairportcentric board, patterned in name off the FC song Walk Awhile)for similar offences. The fact is I often pop in for my music and other news just prior to work, or bed, or some timeline, and I spew it out in one unseemly jabber. Sort of Kerouac like but without his brain or ampetamines. That one yesterday was right before I went to work.

Thanks, James James, I'm not the one "in charge" but usually get a heads-up and reason if something has been deleted. Are you sure it wasn't more than a couple of days ago and maybe around May 5th instead and listed under a different thread entitled TAAB2 Review? thejethrotullboard.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=general&thread=2666&page=3#24364Dan

thejethrotullboard.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=general&thread=2666&page=4#24943I posted this on the TAAB2 Reviews thread. (May 18, 2012) I must say Mikeytull & JTull07 responded appropriately. ;D www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showthread.php?t=275572&page=22Bad reviews? See Canadian reviews; www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showpost.php?p=7670456&postcount=436Read more: top100canadianblog.blogspot.ca/2012/04/music-review-of-day-jethro-tulls-ian.htmlHonestly, the only thing I like here is that instead of a newspaper, the CD booklet is made to look like a news website. That's the only update Anderson got right. Canada continues the bombing of the St. Cleve Chronicle & Linwell Advertiser's foundations. I dare not cut&paste this damning document. THICK AS A BRICK 2 – It ain’t no Jethro Tull www.musicjunkies.ca/?p=695A failure, but not a lost cause. Some of the decisions are puzzling, but a little of the music stands up. Thick As A Brick 2 won’t make anyone’s best-of lists (but now that I’ve said it Brick 2 will probably win a Grammy) but it won’t be the final nail in the coffin either. Take it for what it’s worth. IAN ANDERSON: TAAB2 (EMI) April 23, 2012. blogs.theprovince.com/2012/04/23/ian-anderson-taab2-emi/Anderson is the leader of whatever constitutes Jethro Tull, which, 40 years ago, recorded the progressive-rock concept album, Thick As A Brick. This is the belated (and, according to Anderson, reluctantly made) sequel. There are a few strains of the original on TAAB2 to provide a link, but not many. Anderson uses the opportunity to reflect on the growth into adulthood of his central character, Gerald Bostock, but it is as much a taking stock of how Anderson sits now as well as the many changes in Jethro Tull that have left him the sole founding member. TAAB2 has provided more focus and purpose than Tull albums have had in the past few years (or decades) as it is story-driven and effectively recaptures a sound. C plus. Cheers! Drink away those bad reviews! lol

Thanks, James Deleting a post is not something we take lightly, and to my knowledge that has not happened in your case. There would have been discussion amongst moderators if someone reports a post as offensive or inappropriate, and like Dan said, you would have been contacted. I haven't had any complaints about any of your posts James so my guess is it never transmitted properly. I have followed this thread and sorry but I don't recall seeing a post by you.

Thanks for the reply. Maybe you are right and it didn't post properly. It wasn't inappropriate at all. There's no worries here and I will post again soon.
I don't know how to comment directly to your reply like you did to mine. Can you tell me how to do that please. Thanks Dan and TM.

Yes, more than 10% of the reviews are 1 star. I clipped this: "It does not sound like a band at all to me. It sounds like an assembly of trained sheep in Ian's living room, asking the master for permission to bleat and how loudly". I can't disagree with this, and it's been this way since the 90's.

Let's not forget that this is a solo record. I mean of course you can call it a Tull record. I like to look at it that way. But you actually can't complain about it being Ian telling other people what to do, because it says it is an "Ian Anderson" album, right?

I can't disagree with this, and it's been this way since the 90's. I don't care what has happened in the 90's, 80's, 70's, or 60's. Any one can disagree with Ian Anderson about personnel, but 1 star? This album is at least 4 of 5 stars. Anything less is sour grapes.

Yeah, this is a familiar style of criticism. "I DONT LIKE THIS ALBUM, I REFUSE TO NOTICE A SINGLE REDEEMING QUALITY, BECAUSE MY OPINION MATTERS"
I'm not against negative reviews, in fact some of the best reviews I've read for my favorite albums were negative ones (because they were productive and relevant in many ways), but this is just someone relishing in their own opinion. (not to say I'm innocent of that, but I don't do this shit for a living)
