The only previous time I'd been to this theater was in '93 for Pete Townshend's Psychoderelict show (which was fantastic). Unfortunately I was up in the freakin rafters.
This year, I was a little unprepared for the funky terracing of the floor level instead of standard sloped theater seating. I brought along my new fella, and we ended up in section 3, row J, seats on the far left. Closest I've ever been to anything in my life; I could see facial expressions even!
Setlist matched those from mid-October (MD, PA, NJ, CT). I was pleased for the most part with the selections, as I've kinda been outta the loop since the mid-90's and have missed much.
Ian's energy level was astounding, carousing all over the front of the stage. (Can we bottle that and sell it?) Virtually no complaints with the night's performance itself, though I did cringe slightly at the vocals on Skating. It does suffer from the reduced power, sadly. Florian is freakin phenomenal; I was impressed. Nice surprise guest spot from Doane Perry on Fat Man; the three-man percussion duel was awesome! It was at that point that I realized we had nearly the entire regular JT band onstage for a brief shining moment, just missing Martin. Ah, there's always next year?
As for my date? I think he enjoyed it. Turns out he knows less about the music than I realized, and I will have to edumacate him. Time for an album-by-album course in Tull-ology! He will get plenty of homework, and assignments to fill out, haha!
Oh yeah, we sat next to these two dudes who'd seen like a zillion shows, from the 70's-onward and such. Me, jealous much? YES!!!!

audience of all ages ( the age range of my seatmates in Modesto and SF was 4 thru 84) and concert attendance hx ( first thru 50 plus) is what seperates Tull from other bands. Have fun stuffing Tull down yer kid's throat...it's fun...and funny what kids pick as favorites. Kid friendly cuts include: Beastie, Nobody's car, Montserrat, Skating Away.

P.S.: How come the world doesn't know that Psychoderelict is a masterpiece? Best thing P.T. wrote since Quadrophenia!

No, no, Bernie, I think Zephyr might have thought that your post concerning me wanting to get my little boy into Tull was referring to her wanting to get her new boyfriend into Tull. The confusion arose because both Zephyr and I wrote about wanting to get our boys into Tull, but whereas she was referring to her boyfriend, I was referring to my seven year old. I like your suggestion to her though.......it's "bound" to get good results. Jeff

I confess to not being a Who fan, never really liked their music or their lyrics....but you've got me curious about Psychoderelict. Why is it a masterpiece? Is it the music, the lyrics, is it an interesting concept album of some sort. I don't know anything about it. Jeff

It is a concept album....you'd probably need to be at least a bit of a Townshend devotee to appreciate it....I'm a minority, thinking Quadrophenia is far better than Tommy...and Psychoderelict is a sequel of sorts...or maybe leftover parts, like some of Nightcap to Passion Play. I'm not a Who fanatic...and i think Townshend is wildly inconsistent and often misses the bullseye by miles...but some of his work is unquestionably super-literate rock and roll...and his devotion to his artistic quests is admirable.....think of him as an Ian who went for the sex and drugs along with the rock and roll.....

Let's see, how can I describe PD succinctly? Well, it's sort of a revisiting of his Lifehouse concept, utilizing the character of an aging rock star who gets, umm, a bit railroaded. (Slight parallels with "Too Old"?) See the wikipedia page for more details. The 'radio play' version contains the entire story, acted out over the songs. There's also a 'music only' version with all dialogue taken out. I'll listen to the full cd every now and then (haha, song title reference), but most often I'll play music-only. The songs are just phenomenal, not a single one that I would skip. (Which is the case with nearly every PT album, for me anyways.)

My idea was to go chronological, so he can see how the band evolves. Also inserting fabulous live shows as we go to illustrate how they were playing at any given point in time. He's a total RenFaire geek, so think he'll go gaga when we hit Minstrel, Songs and Horses. I'll hope for the best on the rest!

Post-Quad, pre-Psycho, a very good album and "English Boy" and a few other tracks from Psycho would seem to fit the "White City" album's theme better than Quad IMO. Unfortunately, Townshend's later stuff is a bit like Tull's, poor and inconsistant promotion by record companies which were more geared up to supplying the pop/bubblegum market than most of the more"serious" bands. Not a lot of space or respect for [older] intelliegent rock music these days.

Lou Reed, another favorite of mine, performed 'Now and Then' as a surprise guest at an NYC 'Daltrey sings Townshend' gig....I'd LOVE to see that...I bet he nails that wonderful song!
