Last night (10-25-2012) was the Ian Anderson TAAB 1&2 concert at the Hard Rock Hotel/Casino in Tulsa. Being able to see the group in such an intimate showroom was a special treat for me. The last time I had the opportunity to see Ian/Tull was in 1999 and this trip was a first for me to see Ian without the other members of Tull. The performance was even better than I had expected. Ian's voice has suffered over the years, so the addition of Ryan O'Donnell to sing selected portions of lyrics worked well. Also for this particular show to be 2 albums back to back rather than a misc. roster of classics, was a special treat for me. Both albums sounded sharp, crisp and tight. The music was just loud enough to create the effect we were hoping for. Shortly before the show started I participated in the ritual I have come to relish with other long time Ian Anderson/Tull fans. That is of course looking back on the first time we saw the group, how many times we have seen the group...and of course... where... etc... etc... etc. The opinion that seemed to prevail with the group of folks who sat close by was this....after the show we all agreed...it was better than we had even hoped for. For the most-part with the exception of mini breaks for video/special effects to be used...the group performed non stop thruTAAB in it's entirety. Then without even the expected 15-20 min. break I had heard about at earlier performances, they went right into TAAB2. I'm pretty sure there was about 1/3 of the 2nd album that was left out. I don't recall hearing"Pebbles Instrumental" nor "Swing it Far" or "Confessional". My personal favorite tunes from the new album are "Whooten Basset Town" and "A Change of Horses". However to listen from start to finish as we do with the first album...not so much for me. All the members of the group had energy to spare and the jumping and kicking of his legs while playing the flute by Ian made me forget he's in his mid-sixties. Very good show indeed...well worth the 3 hour drive (X2)...
