Seeing as we have previously explored Ian's feminine side in our Effeminate Ian thread here..... thejethrotullboard.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=3013.....I thought it would only be fair to explore his masculine side in this new thread, which I have entitled 'Manly Ian.' And I have just the story - never told online before, and dare I say installment story? - to kick off the thread! Stay tuned. Jeff

So...here we just say what we think makes up IA's manly man side? Hmm, what comes to mind is the dirt bike riding in the...was it, the 20 year video? Also rocking a trucker hat.
And more in the way of appearance, in 'She said she was a dancer' video, he seems very masculine, very burly. Lots of camo, flannel, all weather boots and pipe smoking. There, he reminds me a lot of my husband, he reminds me of him and I think that will be just what he looks like in ten years. I will try to see if I can think of more later, I'm in a rush.

Heck yes!
Men who grow bald tend to have more testosterone levels too, so there's that too.

Well, who knows, it may not be 100% percent true, but research has shown a link between the two things, but some say it's a myth.

Well there is also the aspect that he has very successfully taken care of his family, raised healthy (to my knowledge) and successful children in a safe environment. To me that is what makes him most manly.
He has also created many jobs for people both in the salmon farming business and in the music industry.
Do I need to point out the most obvious? He plays the flute in a rock and roll band. That is not only a manly job (although the girl in the Tull-influenced band Blood Ceremony does a great job at it) but it is a job for a man who is secure in his manhood--which is a very manly thing.

Hold on there. Let's face it, playing the flute is not exactly manly, although Ian made it manly by the manner in which he played it. And let it be known that in addition to losing my hair I've been riding motorcycles since I was kid.

Well, that's part of the being secure in manhood enough to not be afraid to try different things like that...it's a really great quality.

You mean to tell us you want to tell this story in installments? Well, naturally, and you know you're going to love it! Two installments, plus an epilogue should do the trick this time around. Jeff

And let it be known that in addition to losing my hair I've been riding motorcycles since I was kid. Cheers Paul, I would say that playing flute is not a manly thing to do when you consider what is traditionally considered "Manly", but it takes a man secure in his manhood to go against that. Ian mostly plays very masculine flute, but has played very feminine flute parts as well as performed very feminine dance moves (in front of very rowdy men) and has performed feminine songs, which is something he has been able to do because he has a solid sense of manhood. All the while being a faithful husband (to our knowledge) and a devoted father. Many rock stars from the various decades Jethro Tull has been perfoming may seem manlier than Ian, but that is a manliness that only appears to people through their public image. Ian is a man through and through. This is probably why you and I and thousands of other male Tull fans admire him. Motorcycling is awesome and a manly thing, something both you and Ian share. I have yet to explore the awesomeness of motorcycling.

Even after being overshadowed by many a rock band who does "manlier" things than he does, Ian plays the flute more than ever before! This is because he is a solid man, and does not need to prove it. A role model to young men everywhere. Something that further proves this is his preference to smaller guitars. He does not fear that he will be seen of as less than a man for playing a tiny guitar, because he knows what it is to be a man, and the smaller guitar is what he prefers.

Hahahahah Darin Darin, I have heard from many a source that baldness in men is attributed to genetics. Specifically, if your mother's father is bald, then you will most likely be bald too. I don't know how true it is, but it is the explanation I have most often heard, and there are many genetic patterns that work in this way.

Hahaha Kai I was just being a little over the top and "silly" on the subject. I completely subscribe to the facts that you are describing, if your mothers father is bald, then you most likely will be. That's how I've understood and witnessed over my lifetime...... Darin Cody

Jeff Okay, it's about time I finally tell this story, which I've been planning to do for quite awhile! I know I said two installments plus an epilogue, but it may take me an additional installment or two before I get to the epilogue. As always, there will be a big payoff at the end, you can be sure of that, so please bear with me! Anyway, we are transported back in time to Labor Day weekend, 1999. It was the Dot Com tour, and Tull were playing shows on consecutive nights in Holmdel, New Jersey and Jones Beach on Long Island, as they often do while touring the NYC area during the summer. My wife Karen and I had become engaged about a month earlier, in late July I think, after dating for three years, so it was an exciting time for us. For the holiday, we planned an extended weekend on Long Island, to include the Jones Beach show, of course, and a visit to my parents' house in Stony Brook for a Labor Day barbeque. But, being newlyweds, we were not about to stay with my parents, so instead we made reservations for a nice Marriott about twenty minutes away. The day before leaving for Long Island, which must have been a Thursday, I went to the Holmdel show with Rob Scollo, a great show (albeit a disappointing setlist), so I was excited about seeing the next night's show at Jones Beach. Since we would be staying nearby my parents' house, I had bought four tickets to the show, for me, Karen, my mother and my sister, who at that time was still living with my parents. I had already taken Sis to quite a few previous shows over the years, but this was going to be the first time Mom was ever seeing Tull! To be continued..... Jeff

Hmmm, now let me see....where was I? Stay tuned..... Jeff Three teasers and still no story? Sounds like Ian's last three solo efforts. Dammit Jeff, this better be good! Well, I did start it, two-and-a half years ago, with the first installment. Can't you be a little patient? Trust me, I said there will be a big payoff in the end, and there will be. Second installment coming tonight! Jeff
