Almost all good, of course. The main good thing about the whole album is he FINALLY wrote a new album, after 13 years! (Dot Com) . And since the songs WERE new, I wish he hadn't ended the album w/ the "Thick..." refrain from the 1st album or didnt say "Thick as a brick" quite a few times on track 2. We know, Ian, we get it. (But this is a minir quibble since the songs are GREAT)

It is great to have a new album to explore, even if it does not feature the whole of the Jethro Tull band and it lacks Martin (I almost feel queezy mentioning that since it has caused such stupid fights on the board).
The lyrics are great, I think the band did a great job, it is thematically right on with the original in most ways.
I do wish Ian kept with the "one long song" aspect of the original, but that would be very hard to market since album-oriented rock is no longer the most desirable to record companies.
I also, like most Tull fans I think, wish that there were some more hard rocking tracks on there, and that the band would get into some heavy jams every once in a while.
I do really love how the album begins though, it is brilliant.

I got the album well after they toured NYC.......I'd kinda written Ian off after seeing him about 55 times but if I knew I'd like the album this much.......well I'll catch them on next 'go round. My biggest fear is (and I'm sure it will happen this way) is: He'll tour with TAAB2 forever ad nauseum and we wont get another new album for another 13 years when the "Theme" will be dementia. haha

I think we will not have to wait as long for another release, since the painful reality is that Ian is getting up there in years, and I think he realizes he only has so long to take advantage of the career he's been shaping for most of his adult life. He has expressed in recent interviews he plans to release more albums soon after the end of the Thick as a Brick 2 tour, so we are in for at least a couple more releases from Ian I expect

I can't get enough of TAAB2! I constantly listened to all the little snippets that were/are on the website before it's release. Listened to Banker Bets 2/3 times a day for a week via an american radio station catch up thing and then SO many times when it was streamed over Facebook.

TAAB2 just plain bored me. Except for "Give Till it Hurts", it was not memorable. The narration brought everything to a screaming halt & I thought the whole concept (of "What ever happened to Gerald Bostock?") was weak. I never return to TAAB2.
Maybe if these songs were presented in a format of a regular studio album, as separate tracks, they would have seemed stronger.
I much preferred "Rupi's Dance" and "Secret Language...." to TAAB2.
A real disappointment.

Maybe if these songs were presented in a format of a regular studio album, as separate tracks, they would have seemed stronger. I much preferred "Rupi's Dance" and "Secret Language...." to TAAB2. A real disappointment. I agree with nearly everything you've said. To be truthful, I've only listened to TAAB2 perhaps three times since I did a review of the release for this site. I like it less now than when I originally heard it. Expanding on what I said previously, particularly after having some time away from the piece, I think TAAB2 is irredeemably morose and utterly lacking in the humor of Tull's greater works. Even when Ian makes an attempt at humor, such as the god-awful Southern Baptist accent of the announcer after the song "Give Till It Hurts" (which, although far too short, is the best song on the album), he fails. Ian is so caustically cynical and snide that it suffocates any possible intended wit. Given that the spoken bit reiterates the same themes as the song previous to it, it was absolutely unnecessary. To me, it is unlistenable. And the more I think about Gerald Bostock, the more I wished he had committed suicide after writing his magnum opus at nine. His life is really not worth a song, let alone an entire album. I wouldn't even drink a beer with this guy. I suppose I don't really care for the fact that he was raped as a schoolboy and then became some homeless sod sleeping around like some slutty old fag. If Ian really wanted to make a compelling story about a gay man, he could have had him find true love and a life partner, not some stereotyped view of homosexuals sleeping with whatever crawls into bed with them. And the storyline itself, Gerald as a banker, a homeless man, soldier, shopkeeper and evangelist is, from a plot standpoint, farfetched. Not that such a personal history is not possible, but it just comes across as strained. I realize that this is Gerald at fifty looking back at his miserable life (and it was miserable), but I am 53 and I am looking forward not backward. I still have hopes and dreams and plans I intend to fulfill. I still listen to Thick as a Brick because it is uplifting and hopeful and damned funny, I won't listen to TAAB2 because it is so fucking depressing. Hell, the album A Passion Play is about a dead guy, but he's far more alive than the whining loser Gerald Bostock turned out to be. Or is it that Ian has turned into a bitter old fuck?

So, what you guys are basically admitting is.......the long-awaited (TEN years since Ian put out anything new..."Rupi's ..and FOURTEEN years since the last Tull)) and much anticipated return of ORIGINAL, finally NEW recording from Ian Anderson............SUCKS. Oh, well. He's got one thing going for him though......a nice SPEAKING voice

BTW, the one song I think is acceptable is "Banker Bets....". Just as a song: verse/chorus nd the vocoder? vocal

Can't say I disagree with you Greg, since the pinnacle of Gerald's life apparently was the numbed senses and numbed brain over at 54 Mulberry Lane. And while I'd like to care what happened to Gerald Bostock. I can't say I really do.

Ms Tommie - I actually started the new album at 09.00 Jan 1 and, apart from the tweak to lyrics and some links and solo sections, finished it three weeks later. Solid work and little sleep. We won't record it until Dec 2nd. On tour too much. But release in 2014 around Easter (mid-April). And some tours in various countries. No more TAAB tours planned in the future, however much I have enjoyed it. I figure a new recording every two years and a healthy musical life of another ten, means at least three more albums. In some ways, I have the themes already spelled out in the back of my head but one step at a time.
And if some other folks folks post some stern words towards you following my gentle castigation, don't take it too much to heart. I like a woman who speaks her mind and gets mad. Well, at least some of the time! Do you really play the bass? JHH burned his stripy clothes after his last gig in 1976. His way of saying goodbye to his musical career interlude. Whoops - soundcheck! 16.15 - must run.

We are very used to his forwardness, so there shouldn't be too much backlash for him.

Keep the music coming :-)

Hey Tommiebaby, I'm not trying to be mean (really), but are you bipolar? Do you have multiple personalities. In your opening post to this thread you say "...the songs are great". A few posts later, the album sucks? If you have some form of mental illness as many of us have had to deal with, I sincerely hope you are getting professional help. You obviously know your Tull. You perhaps do know more than any of us here. Perhaps you suffer from obsessive compulsive disorder. On your other topic you make a great point about when the band members joined!

It's a new sound, even progress. It's wonderful. Casually in recent days I way, I heard the Album 6 times! There is something that attracts me in a magnetic way in the quiet singing of Ian in this work. Live, I went to see 4 times TaaB 2 concerts, in my own country and abroad. At the weekend it will add ' another, in Zurich, Switzerland. Also the idea that there are other works in the coming years, I am enormously pleased, and Ian Anderson, of all this I can only be grateful.

Hi Chea,
I find I really enjoy the end of TAAB2 2. Most notably 22 Mulberry Walk and What ifs, Maybes, Might-Have-Beens.
In fact the "building nations" section of Confessional rivals Ian's finest moments. Similar in a sense pieces ob TAAB and APP - "what will you do when the old man's gone..." and all of your best friends telephones...."

Overall I'd appreciate all of "TaaB 2", but in fact the parties you mentioned are even more remarkable. With this, I'll gladly even more this coming Saturday to listen TaaB to 2 Show in Switzerland .
