I'd choose Stormwatch and Broadsword as my favorite covers. Songs From The Wood, too. (Especially the back cover of that, with the tree stump record player.) My least favorite (by a wide margin) would definitely be Dot Com. A Little Light Music's cover is acceptable but not terribly inspiring. (It's a tiny bit cheesy looking, if you ask me.) I have no musical talent or ability so sometimes the discussions of certain musical technicalities here fly over my head. I'm a bit more comfortable being a graphic arts critic, I guess.

Songs from the Wood, back cover. And front cover...it took me a long time to spot the black dog. For some reason my eyes didn't register that. And Heavy Horses. I'm a big fan of photography on covers but when it's a little more creative than just a band photo. Also there's animals on those so there's that.
I don't mind Dot Com's cover but I notice in that picture it's not the edited version we got here in the US. hehe.
Yeah, A Little Light Music isn't my style. Looks like it would be on some weird T-shirt my dad wore in 1989 or something. That he got as a souvenir when we went to Florida. And maybe stopped at South of the Border on the way and bought that. And bought a bunch of fireworks. The end.

My favorite in Stand Up, followed by Broadsword.

Favorite: Broadsword. Least favorite: Dot Bomb. But then there is that back cover on the 'A' album that looks like escapees from the nuthouse just as they realize they are about to be captured. And then there's the inner sleeve photo from the 'A' album, where it looks as if the band arrive via helicopter in order to engauge in a futuristic farting contest. What were they thinking? I don't want to know.

Ha, right, border towns that sell fireworks and souvenirs. Welcome to the south. I think The ALLM cover looks like someone who loves to play with crayons found a computer instead and noodled whilst watching a PBS fundraiser presentation. But then anything with "TULL" written somewhere on the cover is better than anything that doesn't.

Haha, that silly creature. What exactly is that? Is it a Dot Com? And if it can breed, can we see the female version? Is that banned here too? Yeah...anyone else here ever drive from the northeast to the southeast? It's so fun. Signs every few miles, "Only 347 miles until South of the Border" then two miles later, "Only 345 miles" and then you get there and decide to stop because those signs were so enticing and it's like..."Ok...so..." I believe I've had souvenirs from there. Like impractical things as in a really large pencil. So the next time I needed a log sized pencil, I had one available to me. And of course the Cracker Barrel and Waffle House signs every few miles. I prefer the artistic photography more than the actual art. I feel terrible for saying that like I should wear a bag over my head when I do.

Oh yeah, I remember those South of the Border signs! I truly thought that place was something special, especially after seeing so many cars with SOTB bumper stickers in New Jersey. I was truly amazed to find that place littered with junk. Is that place still around? I drove down to South Carolina a couple years ago and never saw a sign for it. Toby brought up the Under Wraps album cover being the worst but, as I mentioned years ago, this album cover featured the use of subliminal seduction on it's rather simplistic styling. The front and back covers with the folds of the sheets strategically positioned to attract the male music fan.

I was with Kenneth and I think we decided not to stop. All the times I stopped I was with my father. He loved it. Rode up the elevator to the top of that huge sombrero too. Hence my father would have a T-shirt that looked like ALLM but say South of the Border. And the bumper stickers too. "C'mon Holly, let's go see Pedro!" So...you guys get Under Wraps...what do us girls get? The Dot Com critter?

Are we talking only covers? I'd like to expand it to artwork as a whole. I absolutely love Too Old... artwork. The comics drawn by Dave Gibbons are superb.

Stand Up, Aqualung and Thick as a Brick are the best, whereas the worst are Dot.com (how annoyingly Satanic looking), A Little Night Music (Look! it's Ian made out of cake sprinkles!) and A (god awful white suits ushered in Tull's decline).

Yikes. Just realized the Dot Com cover picture I copied is *ahem* anatomically correct, which makes it all the worse.
It's been a while since I had the physical CDs, so I'd forgotten how the US version had the naughty bits blacked out.
Now that I'm all MP3, I guess I kind of miss another dimension of the album experience- the sleeve art.
PS- Stand Up was indeed an example of good cover art. You can tell someone worked hard on that, just like the Broadsword painting.
A Little Light Music, by contrast, looks like clip art. Roots To Branches does too, a tiny bit, but I don't object to that as I do like the design.

I still see the "See Rock City" signs on barn roofs down here. Or should that be "rooves.' Should be. Do yall have Cracker Barrels and Waffle Houses? Some CB are good and some are pretty bad, but the WH is always greasy but I like them. I guess that makes me a redneck. In some places down here that's the only thing open in the wee hours. When I was on the road back in the day we did the Waffle House. Ever had a pecan log from Stuckey's? Hmm, you're probably to young. I guess the south can be strange to a nor easter, but I just can't get used to the idea that Canadians put gravy on french fries. That freaked me out. I asked for ketchup at a McDonalds in Hamilton once and they looked at me like I was from Kronos. Well, I don't want to see that creatures' mate, so I hope it's banned. That's another cover I never quite understood. Yeah, must be a DOT COM. I had often wondered what one would look like. A bag over your head? Artistic photography is art you know. And since when do you care what people think?

We don't have the Waffle Houses, but I've eaten in them when I went to FL. We didn't have Cracker Barrel for a long time but a few have opened up. Aqualung...I swear I saw him after the Boston show...I told everyone but I think only Quizz heard me and saw the guy. Was quite amusing. I'm going to go to sleep and dream of scary little Dot Coms.

I think Broadsword is my favourite. So much work went into it, it fits the themes of the album and I loved it when I was able to translate the runes, although they could have gone with something more original, I suppose. That's what I miss most about vinyl albums - the sleeve-art. I never had a good enough soundsystem to appreciate the difference to Cds in sound quality. I hate the sound of mp3s though. But I digress...
Rock Island, War Child (front, anyway), Catfish Rising and Nightcap have a "Will this do?" quality about them, but I reckon my least favourite is "A". Bizarre costumes, peculiar setting and Martin looking out of that truck on the back?! Not good!
I like the "Under Wraps" logo, but I've got a soft-spot for that album, anyway!
No idea what the thing on the front of "Dot Com" is supposed to be but I'm sorry they neutered him for the American market. They could have put a sticker over it, surely? Such a big fuss over such a little thing!

The one here the food is never hot enough. Yall should have a Jack's. Burgers and fried chicken, and the best breakfast of any fast food joint. I've never seen Aqualung but there was this guy, Moses, who would appear at all the concerts around the south in the old days wearing a robe sometimes and even a staff. He had long blondish hair and was old looking. First saw him in 71 at an Iron Butterfly concert. I thought he was with Black Oak who was the opening act. But then he appears again at the Mahavishnu show a couple years later, then ELP and Led Zepplin, and perhaps a dozen others over the decade. The last time I saw him was in 79 in Birmingham at Tull's Stormwatch show. He had short gray hair now and wore a leather jacket. Almost didn't recognize him. So I go up and ask, "Are you Moses?" And he says, "I was called Moses in my youth, yes." So I said, "What happened then?" And he said, "Nothing, I'm in disguise. My time will come again one day." So I just nodded and eased off to the east and left him alone.

But it's perfectly okay for them to view violence in the media. If Dot Com was being maimed on the cover, we'd be fine with it. haha.

My choice would be TAAB. Simply because my brother handed it to me when I was 12! That was my absolute first exposure to anything tull. My least is Under Wraps. Probably because of the content!

Right. Pizza once a month, period. Too easy, too fattening, too generic. If I eat pizza it's Stephano's, a local parlor. Those Franchise pizza joints all taste alike to me. It's like the can food companies. Whether it's spaghetti, ravioli, chili mac, or beefaroni, it all has the same basic flavor.
Moses was a leftover from the hippy days. Concerts were different then. Amazing how close some of those events came to being orgies at times, especially festival seating (on the floor), and drugs out in the open and out the yang. These were happenings as much as anything where young folk went to meet up with like minds - totally underground. The Warchild show wasn't even advertised in the mainstream media, but 20,000 fans showed up, same with Led Zep. Word of mouth was everything. Moses must have realized the end of all that by the mid 70s and just tuned out.
Oh, (to stay on topic) how could I forget the TAAB cover. Somebody just mentioned it a while ago. That seems so dated now with it's Pythonesque humor and nonsense, but I still drag it out for a look every few years. Kudos for the Mintrel cover as well.

I remember looking at the TAAB album for the first time at my father's. Looking through all the newspaper stuff saying to myself, "What in the heck is this?" haha. Mr. Moth drives me crazy with pizza. Hey, look, we can feed all five of us on two pizzas! (One for him) and when we don't know what to make at home or the house has no food. Make pizza! ahh! I really can't take sauce when I'm pregnant so recently we made me a cheese only pizza. I like this one place in Connecticut for pizza, NY style. Up here in NH, there are so many pizza places but none know what they're doing. I know I've gone over this subject probably at a ridiculous length before but...there's one place that's really really bad. We went in 2010 when we were up here and I never even tried the pizza because I couldn't handle the smell alone. He had some and I asked him, "Is it bad?" He said, "Only when you taste it."

He had some and I asked him, "Is it bad?" He said, "Only when you taste it." I'm not altogether sure what was going on during the early seventies to be honest, and I don't think many did. The TAAB and Warchild tours were entertaining but some of it was just silly. Still, I hate when it faded away because it was tongue in cheek, then the punk bands were like so serious with their social commentary. Heck, we just came through Vietnam, time to laugh again. I guess. For some strange reason unknown to science, North Alabama has some dang good pizza joints. Well, a few. Granted, a couple of the better ones are New York transplants but one isn't regulated to having to settle for Pizza Hut as is the case in many small towns.
