I am still convinced this is the best box set by an artist I've ever bought. It is a literal treasure-trove of unreleased material. Stellar front to back.
What are people's fav. gems off this thing?
Stuff like "Summerday Sands", "March the Mad Scientist", "Pan Dance", and "Sunshine Day" made this an absolutely winning purchase.
Makes me think.... Ian should bring back Pan Dance with the boys these days.

The 2 standout tracks for me have to be Jack-A-Lynn and Coronach, which I had never heard before. Amazing to me that they didn't get radio play.

Just listened to Coronach. Both it and Jack-A-Lynn are amazing.
Did Coronach ever make it into a setlist?

I don't think so. Now that would be a great surprise wouldn't it? It's mostly instrumental and I think Ian's vocals could handle it as well.

every song that appeared on that box set was a diffrent verrsion which made it nice it was either a b side side or a live cut, but it had never had been oficial released. So it was on of the better deals. I stil have a sealed lp copy and a sealed cd version of. The booklet that came with it was great as well.

"Part of the Machine" is a fantastic track.
I agree with the assessment of this release being one of the best of its kind. The scope is simply staggering and should have shored up Tull's critical reputation; of course, it did not. I remember getting this shortly after it was released and being astounded by the sheer breadth of material. It still rates highly with me and I pull it out from time to time.
"Jack Frost and the Hooded Crow", "Beltane", "Strip Cartoon", "Grace", "Coronach", "Too Many Too", "Down at the End of Your Road" (would love to find the single live performance of this on a recording), "Summerday Sands"... literally, I could go on for a few more. It's that good.

Goodness man, do you often ask parents to choose a favorite child? The whole thing is a standout gem. Plus it's the first time we get to hear some of the Chateau d'isaster Tapes! I don't have many boxsets so yes I would be inclined to agree that this is one of the best. If it weren't for the mastering (bass, ohhhh bass...where are you? Also, did they crank the 8k and above?) I'd almost say the thing was perfect.

For me it was the Chateau D'Isaster tapes plus Motoreyes. I'm still annoyed that Motoreyes didn't get put on the expanded Broadsword (but the (to me) horrific Overhang and Rhythm in Gold did).

I would also say the 'Chateau D'isaster' tapes -- I then strung together 'Passion Play', 'Skating Away' and 'Lick Your Fingers Clean' for the 'Passion Play Collosal Concept Album Edit'. I've listened to it that way ever since.

This box set is such a pure gem ! Especially all those rare acoustic songs... Some of my Tull favourites are there... Kelpie, Mayhem Maybe, Jack-a-Lynn, Jack Frost, Summerday Sands, Pan Dance (will we ever hear the rest of these sessions ?!), the non-Anderson tracks Coronach (but Palmer copied his styled so well !) & King Henry's Madrigal, and also this new track called "Part of the Machine" (What a shame that this is never performed live as far as I know !!) When it was released in 88, I had no CD player yet (I only bought one in January 1989) and I was buying CD's cautiously as they were so much more expensive than LP's, anyway. So anyway I bought the double LP version... The 5 LP box set was awfully expensive and I didn't want to pay so much for many tracks which I had already.... The sleeve wasn't clear enough and didn't mention that all tracks were remastered or in live versions ! I would have probably invested in the 5 LP box if I had known ! Instead I bought the double LP and discovered later what I was missing ! I then ordered the 3 CD box set a few years later, maybe in 91 or 92, after not being able to find it anywhere, but I was afraid it would be out-of-print... Fortunately, it wasn't yet and even for an import, I didn't pay so much for it... well, compared to the price of imports at the time. I remember when I went to the shop after they had warned me it was arrived.. I was like a little kid on his best Christmas Day ever ! Ian Anderson is such a bad judge of what are his best tracks, sometimes... It is just a shame that so many unreleased or rare songs on this box set were not on regular LP's... In one way, it is the best thing of Jethro Tull that I own. Even if they added most of the rarities on the remastered editions, and with a better sound, I think there are still a few rarities still exclusive to this box set, apart from the live tracks... And the booklet was very good anyway. Fantastic release !

marcm,
I love your analogy upon receiving the 20th Anniversary Box Set feeling like being a kid at Christmas!
I, (probably most of us here) felt the same way. What a great treasure trove of unreleased gems! And the previously unreleased "Part Of The Machine" was icing on the cake.
Ian states there is 'nothing left in the vault' but I would gamble almost anything I own that there is enough demos and unreleased songs to fill another cd or two.
For your added satisfaction-"Part..." was played live during their 20th Anniversary Tour as witnessed here:

Thank you Dan.. Really, I didn't know that this track had ever been played live... I wished I had seen them again in 88, but they came in 87 in Paris... One of the best concerts I attended. The next few ones of JT and Ian Anderson with orchestra that were never as good. Very expensive, but not as good.
