Martin, there was talk a couple of years ago about you recording an album of Tull music with your own interpretations. I did and still think this would be so exciting. Please tell me this is still on the cards Martin?

Martin, I realize the questions a bit broad, but which Jethro Tull album throughout the years did you and the boys have the most fun writing, arranging and recording, and what was it like? Thanks so much for taking time to answer our questions! Kai from Virginia

Martin, Firstly, just to thank you for the great pleasure, excitement and inspiration I have gained listening to your playing over the years. As an amateur musician I'd love to ask you a music related question...however, I can't think of a good question right now so I'll do the opposite... If you had not followed a career in music what do you think you might have done? Brian in Belfast.

Martin, throughout the myriad of amazing players that Tull has included over the years, the musical team of you and Ian has remained its one constant (since 1969, at least!). How would you characterize your relationship with Ian, and has it changed much over time?

Hello Martin, it's a great pleasure for us that you have accepted to answer the questions about Tull items that we'll be asking you in this thread. Thanks very much, Martin.
I thoroughly enjoy your solo guitar playing. So my particular question is to know what is your reaction when you read or listen to those critics or lists made about who is the best guitarist of all time. I place you worthy into a ten best list. What do you say about that? Actually I think you're the most underated guitarist in the rock 'n'roll history. What would your own prefered top ten list be?
Yours sincerely from the Spanish number one Tullfan.

As one of the World's Worst Guitar Players, I'd really love to ask you how you've managed to give so many consistantly brilliant performances. I'm not going to though. When you consider that in the never mind how many years I've been playing I've never managed one borderling mediocre, I'm sure the answer would depress the living spit out of me. Instead, I'll take this opportunity to ask this: Who is your favorite guitarist?

Martin, do you find the lack of new material/new Tull albums frustrating or are happy to just play? And any thoughts on the current state of the music industry?

Martin - there aren't many days in the past 40 years that I haven't listened to you play. Your approach to the guitar just resonates with me. Thank you for all the joy you've brought me.
It seems that over the years in concert your guitar isn't as high in the mix as in the old days, and that your playing is more restrained than in the past. Any chance that songs like Backdoor Angels, To Cry You a Song or the more rocking parts of TAAB and APP might be brought back to the set? or would you even want to play these more aggressive types of songs these days? I think a lot of Tull fans would love it, I know I would!
With love and respect, Matt

Martin, In general, I'd like to know the impact The Beatles made on your life, as a musician and otherwise. Did you ever see them perform? Was any one Beatle a favorite of yours? Thanks, Dave from Maryland.

Hi Martin, I noticed in the early days you seemed to prefer the Les Paul. When did you switch to hammer? and is that still your prefered guitar for the stage.? also what rig do you use in the studio. Thanks for taking the time for this J-

Hi Martin,
greetings from Germany!
over the years I heard many guitar instrumentals in live JT-shows. Is there ever a chance to get them recorded properly?
In 1998 I visited your solo shows in Germany. Parts of the concert in Stuttgart were radio-broadcasted. Is there a chance to get the not broadcasted songs too?
In some songs during JT-concerts, such as "Skating away..." Ian is struggling with his voice. How do you feel about this onstage? Do you talk about the song selection in this context?
In 2009 I visited the "Excalibur" shows and in September 2010 I visited the Classic rock tour in Germany. ( Thanks for "James O´Donnels Jig"!). Your thoughts about this tours and the relationship to the other musicians?
Thank you most sincerely
Rainer

Good Day to You Martin:
You always been my most favorite guitar player on this planet and I know you have always been with Ian from the very beginning. My question is this:
Is everything always business or do you have a special friendship with Ian because of Tull?
Regards, Silken...
P.S. I love Stage Left.

Martin What a pleasure! My questions are around how you approach a long piece such as a TAAB or APP album as the extended pieces have always fascinated me 1. What do you have to consider in an extended album that you do not in an album of shorter songs (or is it simply shorter pieces of music worked together to form the whole suite?) 2. With a longer piece you will no doubt get repeated reoccurring motifs do you actively/consciously work on establishing and re-engineering these throughout? 3. Do you have to consider consistancy in say the guitar sound throughout (I.e. make sure a start and end [if reprised] are tonally similar and therefore make sure they are recorded at the same time to get exactly the same sound) or do you simply pick the sound to match that part of the piece at the time... How much autonomy do you get in constructing the guitar arrangements / melodies? Do you work alone or with Ian or with the other musicians as a band on sections (or all of the above!) and which method do you personally prefer? I could just go on and on as Tull are my fave band but I'll let others have a turn! Now that I too write and release my own albums, it always amazes me just how young you all were when you were writing those first masterpieces... I am very glad that you have all continued, not many of your peers can claim that. Long may you continue Guy Manning

Hi Martin,
You are truly one of the guitar greats and you have inspired my youngest son to play the guitar.
My question to you - have you ever felt frustrated over the years as some of the Tull albums and tours do not feature you much on the electric guitar?
Best wishes Keith

Hi Martin,
Thanks very much for all the enjoyment you have given us Tull fans throughout the years, and of course for taking the time to answer our questions.
My question pertains to writing music. Ian has stated that when he writes for Jethro Tull, he's writing with the sensitivity of the other guys in the band. Do you do the same when writing your own music, and does the vocalist have any affect on your writing style?
Along similar lines, have you ever thought of or have you ever written a song that you felt would be perfect for Ian to sing? I think it would be very interesting for the two of you to swap roles in that regard.
Lastly, do you have any plans to release any new music in 2011 - with Tull or without?
Regards, Paul from New Jersey

Posted for Estabansmythe:
Question 1: How come your volume has been lowered in recent years and you haven't blasted away in classic Martin fashion. Is this your choice or Ian's?
Question 2: Why hasn't Ian lowered everything several notes so that he is better able to accommodate his damaged singing voice? I''m mean, he's been putting us loyal fans through hell show after show for the past quarter century.

How is your memory for, say, September 1969 ? That's a tough one ! Coming back through the audience at the end of the show in the National Stadium Dublin, Ian had his flute taken and his coat ripped. Any memories of this ?
Do you recall Skid Row at the earlier concert in Dublin that year (with Phil Lynott and Gary More0 ?

Question for Martin from Charlie D., our newest member not yet able to activate because of an activation code snafu, which we are currently working on and hope to resolve soon.
Q. Hello Martin, I was watching the Tull dvd that came out in '08 and when you were talking about John Glascock and his death you had a look like you wanted to say we should of ended the band. Did that ever cross your mind or the others?
Charlie, hippie Tull fan from Poughkeepsie

Hello Martin.
Two part question;
What band or musician would you most like to record with or wish you could have recorded with that are now gone?
And while practising , do you find yourself reaching for the acoustic guitar more these days , or does the electric guitar still take precedence?.
Dan from Upstate New York
