Right, picture the scene. You've just left school and your in your first job trying to make an impression and your boss calls you over, passses you his telephone and says 'you have a call.....it's Gubber from France'. Me thinking it's a wind-up takes the call tentatively. 'Hello''Pat, it's Gubs , got a bit of a surprise for you?''Yeah, you're calling me at work from France, what's the surprise other than that?''Got you a tape.''Of what?'
'A Passion Play''Oh Cheers, what a French label? Anyway you diidn't need to call me about that at work.' emphasising the WORK bit. 'Nooooo! this is something really special - I'll drop it round as soon as I'm home in the UK' So, that was it, my boss looked at me oddly, a call from France from a bloke called Gubs about an LP by that band that I like, it must have seemed a bit OTT. Anyway fast forward a couple of weeks and theres a call at home. 'Pint tonight' came the enquiry. 'Welcome home Gubs, I'm working in the Cow if you want to drop by''Sounds good - See you later, I'll bring your tape'.I worked as a DJ in a local pub, Gubs arrived whilst I was doing my disc spinning and presented me with a cassette, the smile on his face said 'SMUG' as he handed over the cassette. 'Wait 'til you hear it' I stuck on 'Band on the Run' [it was a good track to play as it ran into Jet' and gave you a bit of time], stuck the cassette in the tape deck and donned the headphones....what I heard made me smile and feel all SMUG! 'Bloody Hell, Where the hell did you get this, is it real?''Yep, so I'm told, a French guy I worked with gave it to me after I told him you were a BIG Tull fan, he had some connections with the band and had this'.So, to that day I kept it to myself, until 'Nightcap' came out that is, and then I heard bits of this played by another friend who had come across a copy post-release of 'Nightcap'. So, I thought I'd share some of it, I'd be interetsed to know what you think. There's about 30 mins or so of it. I'll add more over the next day or so. These aren't all the versions you've come to enjoy and love on nightcap...It is very raw, it needs cleaning up and that will be done as professionally as I can get it done, but for now, sit back, relax , transport yourself back to 1972 or thereabouts and enjoy..... Part 1 - Lifebeats, the raw mix.

Part 1 - Lifebeats, the raw mix. That is bloody awesome! Hearing Martin, Barrie, John and Jeffrey playing something "new" after all these years just brings a smile to my face. Remember those Dot Com sessions Ian put up years ago? Those were cool but those pale in comparison to this. This is something really special. This is amazing stuff. Can't wait to hear more.

Getting the tape was like finding the one and only Holy Grail......So, then the second part was what turned out to be later listed as Scenario.
There is a segue betwen most tracks, making it a continuous piece of music, as with these two pieces I have had to split them but will reinstate them when I put all the lot together for the board with one long video in the near future.
Currently working on some possible animation to go with it, when I get the technology sorted.
If anyone on the board wishes to contribute to the video iamges with artwork or other then please let me know.
Part 2 - Scenario Raw Mix 1972
The current transferred sound quality [tape to PC] is not up to the original, but we are working on that as we write.

Nice to hear that without all that reverb on Ian's vocals

Oh wait till you hear the rest! It'll be even better when we have it transferred and cleaned up, The holy grail to end all holy grail discussions? I have had this for years and always thought it might be out there somewhere in 'boot'-land, but I've never come across it other than 'Sailor'. Maybe I wasn't looking hard enough. It's nice to think that until 'nightcap' or thereabouts, I might have been enjoying this in complete isolation... Yours faithfully Smuggy McSmugness of Smugshire

Hearing "Scenario again"...methinks some of it re-emerged later in BAKER STREET MUSE

Hearing "Scenario again"...methinks some of it re-emerged later in BAKER STREET MUSE Guy, That is wierd. I transferred this the other night and couldn't help but think the Nightcap 'Chateau' recordings seem like two completely different albums in their feel, assembled in the wrong way for the Nightcap album only. Listening to this again the other night reinforces that, the 'Animal' themed songs make up one album, the deeper stuff like these two pieces, Scenario, No rehersal, Audtion, Sailor and the others I have, another album, to me they are clearly written with a different mindset and thematic structure. And, Minstrel, in particular, Baker Street Muse, definitely sprung to mind as being similar or 'sister' works.

I really liked the old lifebeats!!!! Shark Daniel So do I, it's just interesting I think to hear the development of this and the final pieces that made up one of the most controversial albums of that time. even better when you consider the other associated things that were being considered along with the multi-media projects considered by ian at that time as demonstrated by the Warchild/APP script that Jeff posted here a few weeks ago. Which I have to say I was surprised didn't raise more interest amongst members.

Quizz Kid....you're a Whiz Kid! Thanks so much for sharing these diamonds in the rough for us to hear, and I can't wait 'til you polish them up. Of course the next question is if you or anyone else out there has the clout to get Ian to remaster them and release them as bonus tracks on a 40th Anniversary edition of A Passion Play?....

Mike Better yet, now that I think about it.... Another question for Ian's Q & A: Ian, Would you consider remastering and releasing the original Passion Play album sessions that have just emerged for the 40th Anniversary edition of A Passion Play? Cheers, Michael Grin

Mike MIke I'm sure that I haven't got enough clout to get anything done.... and they may not be that rare, who knows. One day I'll add the full story of my mate getting the tape, which involved him in a head expanding cheese based infection, a car crash and a being hit by a CS gas canister while sitting outside a Parisian cafe.....that is all true, and could only be told in instalments, which might make it all sound a little smug and contrived.

I've got Ralitsa on the case and we'll try to find out exactly what songs were on it.

I suspected they might have been a boot, but I've never seen it, the stuff is too good to not have made a boot at sometime. Other than 'Sailor', post Nightcap, I don't recall hearing any other pieces or clips elsewhere [Maybe I'll check out youtube and see what's on there] I can only say that I was given this cassette around three weeks to a month after the London Warchild gigs in 1974, been sitting on it ever since along with some other bits and pieces. Still, it seems a lot of people haven't heard it, so I'll continue to add the remaining pieces. Be good to know what might have been on any boot though....

I thought that buzz sounded familiar. Not to coach, ;D there's a download or two out there, if you look under covers, covers almost all of the missing pieces+.

TT the buzz is from a tape to PC transfer, it is not a download, and came into my possession way before downloads. It's from a cassette tape that has no 'buzz' and is pretty clear and was only 'transferred to MP3 last night after sitting around in a cassette case for many years.
