I have had this for years and always thought it might be out there somewhere in 'boot'-land, but I've never come across it other than 'Sailor'. Maybe I wasn't looking hard enough. Hi Quizz Kid, The boot you were looking for is called "Minstrels in the Red House". My version (a coverless copy) contains: Monte Carlo, April 1975 (BBC - In Session): 1 Minstrel in the Gallery 2 Requiem 3 Aqualung (Happy 40th Anniversary, Aqui Baby! Today or yesterday or so) 4 Cold Wind to Valhalla Chateau D'Isaster, 1972:
5 Intro (which would be "Early Life Beats") 6 Scenario 7 Audition 8 Skating Away 9 Sailor 10 No Rehearsal Buffalo, USA, September 1975: 11 To Cry You A Song 12 A New Day Yesterday 13 Flute Solo (incl.): 14 God Rest Ye... 15 Bourée 16 Teacher 17 A New Day Yesterday - Reprise If I'm not mistaken - the quality of the boot is slightly better than the one you put online - these are the same recordings. It would indeed be great if your tape would contain more of the Chateau outtakes. I'll keep my fingers crossed that it does. If not, I'm sorry if I crushed your gold digger feeling here. Tudelu KH

Tudelu KH It makes perfect sense that other copies of these songs exist out there. Truth is though, Quizz had this a long time prior to any boots being made. I have the Monte Carlo session you mentioned. Those are very good. I'll have to post them.

I thought that buzz sounded familiar. Not to coach, ;D there's a download or two out there, if you look under covers, covers almost all of the missing pieces+. TT the buzz is from a tape to PC transfer, it is not a download, and came into my possession way before downloads. It's from a cassette tape that has no 'buzz' and is pretty clear and was only 'transferred to MP3 last night after sitting around in a cassette case for many years. I just ordered a new system to transfer tape to digital. I specifically states it will eliminate that issue. I'll let you know how it works soon.

Hi wasn't looking for a boot, just surprised that between be years late 74 through to the release of Nightcap I'd never heard this stuff anywhere else. I presume the guy who passed the tape onto my mate also passed it o to others, it was highly likely that others had it.
I haven't heard the boot so can't comment on the comparable quality. The reduced quality and tape hiss/hum is probably down to my transfer equipment, poor audio 'engineering' skills and possibly some degradation in a 37 year old cassette tape.
Happy to lose the gold finder status to bring it to the attention of many fans who haven't heard it before and to stimulate a bit of discussion and interest.
Seems to have done that.

Quizz Kid....you're a Whiz Kid! Thanks so much for sharing these diamonds in the rough for us to hear, and I can't wait 'til you polish them up. Of course the next question is if you or anyone else out there has the clout to get Ian to remaster them and release them as bonus tracks on a 40th Anniversary edition of A Passion Play?.... Mike MIke I'm sure that I haven't got enough clout to get anything done.... and they may not be that rare, who knows. One day I'll add the full story of my mate getting the tape, which involved him in a head expanding cheese based infection, a car crash and a being hit by a CS gas canister while sitting outside a Parisian cafe.....that is all true, and could only be told in instalments, which might make it all sound a little smug and contrived. Sounds exciting! Like a weird, twisted lost episode of Mission Impossible "Your mission Jim, if you choose to accept it, will be to recover a rare recording of Jethro Tull....but be careful, or the tape will self-destruct in 10 seconds....da da dada da da dada...dooodoodoo......dooodoodoo.....dooodoodoo.....Doo Doo!"

I can't believe it, just before getting its 40th anniversary, the Passion had more issues to discover, actually today the fact has been as much impressive as possible for anyone. Great find, Pat, many thanks for all of this stuff and more things you're making known for these worldwide mad Tull fans . More than two pints to cheer for that. Serge

Well, if that certainly set a few hares running, with or without their spectacles.
Seems that after the release of Nightcap or thereabouts these tracks got on the market as a boot. I haven't heard the boot so I can't comment.
I can say that the quality of my transfer work from tape to PC may not be too hot, but given that a lot of people here haven't heard this stuff before or may not ever get to find a copy , let alone hear it elesewhere, I'll continue to add some of the remaining tracks that I have.
If the quality of the boot is better, then maybe these posts will whet some appetites enough to go out and find it.

Hey Pat you have rewarded the board and the Jethro Tull community with yet another "gem"!!! Simple great stuff!!!! thank you once again!!!
Letting these see the light of day is more important than quality of them. They can always be worked on. Unearthing them so more people can hear them is the most important thing, I think.
We are lucky to have so many devoted fans on this board, who uncover items like this, and contribute their time and knowledge and share with everyone....thanks Paul, Jeff...Pat,tootull, Dan, Kai and everybody else.

I absolutely agree Charlie. And hearing these songs, after Pat laid out this story of intrigue makes the listening so much sweeter then had we just heard them on their own. And that was certainly not meant to devalue any of the other "methods" which these songs may have been released. One more thing Charlie. You also are one who has contributed greatly to our board. Thanks very for being a part of it.

I really liked the old lifebeats!!!! Shark Daniel So do I, it's just interesting I think to hear the development of this and the final pieces that made up one of the most controversial albums of that time. even better when you consider the other associated things that were being considered along with the multi-media projects considered by ian at that time as demonstrated by the Warchild/APP script that Jeff posted here a few weeks ago. Which I have to say I was surprised didn't raise more interest amongst members. Curious thing. Me, totally guilty. Anyway, we all love your effort, bringing us new old Tull stuff to enjoy! While I´m working on my time machine to travel to the 70´s and grab Tull footage, I give you this weird Ian interview that I found on Youtube, in case you haven´t seen it

I just gave Scenario a second listen. We need to lobby Ian for a 40th anniversary edition of APP - The Definitive Version.

Remember reading an interview with Barry Barlow in 1980 or 81, and he thought that IA had removed all the best stuff recorded for A Passion Play and left in all the 'crap'.
I wonder how much of what he was referring to is still to surface?

Seems to me I recall somewhere where Ian recently mentions doing whatever to avoid ever playing the saxophone. There might be a message there about the possibility of any Passion Play anniversaries ...

Thanks a lot for the great share, quizz kid! Although "Skating away" is not very different from the final version, the other two outtakes are worth the buzz ; )

Happy to share, amazing what it has prompted in the more far flung corners of the Tull multiverse.
There is a distanct lack of 'squeezy' thing on Skating replaced with a more emphasised flute.
Glad you and so many have enjoyed it, it looks as if it is out there in that multiverse in other forms, not everyone though seems to think that we should be sharing it and rather than celebrating in the fact that a lot more Tull fans are getting to hear this for the first time, they are bickering over who heard it or had it first....We are happy to share it with the Tull world.
