Barrie Barlow is one of my favorite drummers, period. His playing on "Bursting Out" has had a profound and lasting influence on my own playing. It would be fun to list some of his greatest (most underrated?) Tull tracks, tunes like "Back Door Angel", "Minstrel", "Black Satin Dancer", "SFTW", "No Lullabuy", "Dark Ages", "Saturation", not to mention all of TAAB and Passion Play! Not only is his snare and hi-hat work, hand and foot interplay, and poly-rhythmic invention outstanding and unique, his double-bass work is the best. Not enough people ever talk about his "fast" feet - tho Louie Bellson remarked on it. His use and application of double bass work, where he puts it and how - is quirky and original to say the least, not at all where you expect it like with so many other drummers who are foot heavy. He is simply one of the best, and utterly humble about it. Too humble I think, but the greats generally are.

NO ONE WILL EVER SURPASS CLIVE. Clive Bunker. Master of 5/4 that Ian demanded as much as the suspended 2nds and 4ths. Brilliant! He coalesced with Ian, Glenn, Martin into songs of the gods...(smaller gods, but gods nonetheless). I follow Clive on the internet and want to tell him always that I would treat all the members of Ian's genius band, with a personal hug, if I could. The one that says...that in all the improbabilities of the universe...we're here and I deeply appreciate your talent. Buddha would dance with us if we could keep the egos out of the equation. Ian, feel free to sit in silence with us when you get there. You have done all that a human can do to establish exaltation. Let's now pass it forward. Drop the 'personal' and just jump to the eternal as you have shown your consciousness to merit it. Just saying from one who has wished the best for you and all who have heard you for 40+years now.
Let's see someone do the original drum line in Dharma for One...when it was ORIGINAL !! I humbly submit...it's the best.
Sorry for the soul-felt diatribe... Danny Boy (child of the War Child concert at the Stadium, Chicago)

No one will surpass Clive, but many equal him in their own unique ways. he and Barrie are good friends, and both being very humble, would argue (I am sure) the merits of the other. Mark Craney was no slouch, either.
I already BB is my favorite drummer, but Clive is awesome, too, and very original. Those early JT tunes would not be the same without him.

It really must be luck that the lineup from that era was so god damned good.
Clive and Barrie are both incredible drummers, very very very different approaches. Clive can play some crazy solos too.

2008 Tull Convention - Alessandria, Italy Holy crap, how did I miss this when you first posted it! That's so awesome - glad to see that Barrie's still got it! I love how he pays tribute to Clive with the drum roll that starts slow and speeds up to super warp speed like Clive did when playing Dharma live. With the double bass steady in the background it is even more powerful.

Barrie and Clive, they were the two drummers when I first got into Tull. Probably Barrie because of his work on TAAB, PP and Minstrel but who knows what Clive would have given us if he had stayed when Tull were starting to open up. Always was impressed with the results Clive produced based on the pictures of his drum kit at the time.
