I'm afraid that's not the correct answer, awol. Although a suit of armor would indeed guard against ones adversaries, my first question is there a specific lyrical reference to a suit of armor anywhere in the catalogue? I would imagine there must be, or else you would not have cited it, although I can't think of it offhand. (That could simply be Alzheimers' starting to set in.) But even if it is in the lyrics, it's not the answer I am thinking of. A suit of armor is military garb, whereas my example is a mere garment.....and the lyrics explicitly refer to the manner in which the garment is protective. Don't give up, though! Jeff

Why, yes, Louise, a warmer sporran will keep one's foes at bay, probably the reason Ian is wearing one here, atop his kilt: Congratulations on cracking Lyric Quiz #40! Quizzes # 35-39 are still open, for anyone interested. Jeff

I looked up Sporran "thinking I had the answer" on this one and it did not mention any kind of protection, it's a wallet for the kilt wearers. It mentioned "missconceptions" and is not armor. Ohhh the injustice!!! Darin

Ohhh the injustice!!! Darin Well, the song does say it will keep your foes at bay, even though you're right, why would a warmer sporran, or any sporran, keep ones foes at bay? It's only a wallet. And, since it's only a wallet, how could a sporran provide any kind of warmth? You would think that the lyric should be if you wear a warmer kilt, you can keep the foes at bay. It appears that I repeated Ian's misconception by referring to a sporran as some kind of garment. The word 'accessory' would have been a better choice for the quiz. My bad on that one (Ian's too), but Louise guessed it anyway! Jeff

And as the ale warms you, you wear a warmer sporran. Oh no! Stop me!

And as the ale warms you, you wear a warmer sporran. Oh no! Stop me! That is excellent, JohnN, and surely you are right, because it makes so much sense in the context of the song! That's something I never picked up on before, and it shows, as is often the case, that Ian's lyrics are trickier than meets the eye, with double layers of meaning. It is one of the many things I love about Tull. Great work! Jeff
