Warchild, Thank you for a great evening of music from Jethro Tull. Everyone was great but Mike's piano solo was exceptional. Also, I met your wife in the lobby Mike and she is really nice. Hope to see all you guys and gals again soon. Paulie P.S.: That piano solo's called "A song about everything"' right? It was another great show by War Child, particularly the second set, when some adjustments were made to the house sound system, which only added to War Child's dynamic and powerful performance. I was hanging out mostly with Jim Haddad and Laura of the Jethro Tull Meetup Group, and later with Mike, Barry Goldberg and Laura Massero. Sorry I missed you there Paulie, and same goes to Anthony and Bobby (and Old Rocker if he was there.) With the two levels, upstairs and downstairs, it was harder to meet up with people, which is a shame because I was hoping to meet some new board members. I did of course speak with several Tull fans I met at the show, who I did not know before, and showed them the Board on my blackberry. There were at least three people who said they will be signing up here, but so far they have not, so I guess we shall see. Mike has definitely mastered By Kind Permission of. This time I thought he added a little variation that was not on the Living in the Past Carnegie Hall performance. Perhaps he got that bit from a recording of a subsequent performance of the same piece by John Evans. Jeff

Yes, it is "By Kind Permission Of...", which John Evans performed at Carnegie Hall and the Isle of Wight shows, and includes borrowed pieces of compositions by Beethoven and Rachmaninoff (hence the title), as well as John Evans original music. I did an edited version (due to time constraints), but also added a short section I came up with myself, during the Rachmaninoff bit, in the style of John Evans, which I'm glad you noticed, Jeff! Very well done! Don't think I've ever heard anyone try to tackle that one. How difficult is it to play? Thanks Paul! It was a hard piece originally to learn on keyboards (especially finding a way of covering both John Evans's and David Palmer's parts together!), but once that was done, and after practicing a gazillion hours, it isn't too hard at this point to play in concert----and it's alot of fun... Thanks for posting this, Jim. If it's within driving distance for you and William, you should try to go! Mike informs me that the bass player from the Genesis tribute band Trespass (who Mike and I recently saw perform at The City Winery), will be the front man for this show, and possibly future War Child shows, since their long-time frontman Paul Caruso has left the band. Apparently, the Trespass bass player used to be the lead singer for a great 80's cover band called Witness, who when they played Tull, were so good that they were more of a Tull tribute band than a generic cover band that plays other bands too, as Witness did. I've done a thread on Witness (see link below)....they were excellent.....however during their heydey they actually had two lead singers at different times. I'm not sure whether the Trespass bass player who will be doing the War Child show is the same frontman shown in these videos (I think so, but could be wrong), or whether he was the subsequent singer for Witness, maybe Icecreamman can clear that up for us. thejethrotullboard.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=tribute&action=display&thread=2712Jeff

Happy to report that I was able to attend another terrific Warchild performance at the Cutting Room with pals Nonfatman and Pony Boy! The Cutting Room is a fantastic rock and roll themed venue and perfect place to see a show. The show opened with the band in costume belting out Sweet Dream, complete with the "Warchicks" string section. The ladies give the band a rich sound which captures the sound of seventies perfectly. They followed that up with a powerful rendition of Song For Jeffrey. This was my first time seeing the band with their "new" front-man. He did a admirable job tackling the role of Ian Anderson by playing acoustic, flute, and saxophone! With the addition of the sax, we were treated to a medley of Passion Play (along with the on-stage rabbit) as well as the song Warchild! I have to say that it was a real treat hearing the songs that Ian neglects to play. Other songs included: A New Day Yesterday, Nothing's Easy, Teacher, Locomotive Breath, Bungle In The Jungle, The Third Hoorah, Aqualung, The Hare Who Lost His Spectacles, Thick As A Brick - including Edit 4!, and The Minstrel In The Gallery. The pic below was taken during the instrumental during Minstrel. A nice surprise was hearing Farm On A Freeway which was edited due to time restraints, and sadly Something's On The Move had to be ditched as well. Another favorite of mine is Mike's rendition of By Kind Permission Of. He does a tremendous job with that piece transporting you back to an earlier time with the fan favorite Ice Cream man. The show closed as Mike reminded us the performance was dedicated to the late Paul Caruso. Sad to lose Paul, but nice to see the band carrying on.

It was great seeing you, Jeff and Dennis there, and all the other Tull fans. We hope we did the music justice. We're also thrilled with the wonderful job Flip Britton has done in the Ian Anderson role in such a short period of time, (and he plans a mean harmonica on Song For Jeffrey too!) We hope to see some of you at our show next Saturday night in Bellemore, Long Island as well---we'll be on 7-9:30pm, followed by a Pink Floyd tribute band (Us & Them).
