Congratulations! I think they're just about the coolest instruments ever. I bought one years ago myself, but still haven't learned to play it. Keep us updated on your progress with it!

always fancied one [and a ukelele] I was looking at Ukes first and then decided to go with the mando. It's a bit sexier.

I used to play mandolin (which my girlfriend playing guitar) on various stations on the southwest DC subway a couple years ago. It actually made considerably good money (probably because most people thought I wasn't making any!) it just got horribly depressing--seeing the journeymen coming and going to their jobs with the distant zombie look on their faces, the smell of piss and cigarettes, the horribly loud noises of the trains and cars. Once you're able to pump out a few songs you should post up some recordings or videos! One frustrating thing is (at least a few years ago) I could never find the mandolin tablature for the Heavy Horses and Songs from the Wood albums. Please let me know if you come across anything like that, and if you figure it out yourself (I know your a big enough Tull fan to try ) perhaps you can write the tablature for everyone else!!

I've had an Ovation mandolin for years. I also haven't played it much since I retired from playing in bars 10 years ago. I'd play it right now, but I know it would drive me crazy, because I'd have to restring it. I hate restringing. Always have.

Thank Geebus for electric tuners. I remember tuning with pitch pipes back in the olden days - what a frickin' pain! I think I got my first Boss tuner pedal back in the mid-to-late-80s.

Try throwing the flute you bought at it. ;D Dan LOL. Know at least I can play (or could) play some easy stuff on the flute. I have no idea what I'm doing with this thing!

Did you get one of those Rogue mandolins that go for like $40 or thereabouts? I've had friends that have bought those and couldn't tune them to save their lives. If it keeps going out of tune I would suggest just buying some new tuning pegs (some decent ones). It should alleviate the problem a good bit.

Well then, if you don't know what you're doing, by all means start with "The Battle of Evermore" by Zeppelin. Here's the tablature. tablaturas.buanzo.com.ar/index.php?ident=3189196Make sure you tune the strings GDAE. ;D

^ That's definitely a good one. Another fairly simple one to play is "Going to California". It sounds especially nice too. If you haven't been there yet, I'd recommend mandolincafe.com/ they have a lot of great suggestions on their for beginner mandolinists. It helps a lot if you like playing old country and bluegrass

It was only $50 but the reviews of it on Amazon were very good. Thanks for the suggestion though. I just might have to do that.

It's going to make a huge difference and will definitely be worth the money. To get a set of really good tuning nobs might be around 20 dollars or so--I don't know about mandolins though. The Amazon reviews may have been good, especially for the price, but mandolins that cheap are almost always going to stay out of tune all the time. When people are buying new acoustic guitars and don't have a big budget I always suggest getting the cheap always-go-out-of-tune ones and replace the pegs--it's actually a great way to get an instrument on a budget. Thing is, when your strings are always going out of tune you sound really bed and you get discouraged and end up putting it on the shelf. Be sure to keep it away from moist areas too. I'm sure you already know that though
