I'm not sure why this album gets so many bad reviews. I loved it when it first came out and still do. Brilliantly conceptualised. The cover is so redolent of the comics I had as a kid in England and songs like Crazed Institution and Pied Piper are worthy additions to the Tull catalogue of Meisterworks,(in my unhumble opinion). Maybe not a 5 star classic like Aqualung,TAAB and Broadsword but a great album nontheless.

I agree it's very underrated, the musicianship is incredible, the writing is intelligent and catchy sometimes overstated and theatrical. It has an odd concept that is somewhat loosely thrown together (the concept, not the songs), and it was released at a time when critics were already down on Tull. Is it safe to say it has sold the least of any 70s Tull studio album?

I was 19 when this album was released. I understood the point of sarcasm in the title. I enjoyed the music which had a sad ending. The songs were a little awkward at times. I just did not feel like Tull should be singing about being too old to rock n' roll. For the mainstream audience, it put label on the band which as hard to erase. Now that I am older it doesn't matter except on a license plate.

It was originally going to be a musical. Based loosely on how things that go out fashion cycle back and come back into fashion. A much underrated album. I always loved Taxi Grab, Quizz Kid, Chequered Flag. I heard somewhere that Chequered Flag Ian wrote while visiting his father in the hospital when his dad was dieing.

While it is a very different theme, you can hear a lot of Songs From the Wood in the instrumentation of the album--very different from Minstrel.
