What Jethro Tull items do people collect. I know that I have been collect Jethro Tull since way back in 1972 when I confiscated my sister albums of Stand Up, Benefit, Aqualung and TAAB. I was only 13 at the time, but was listening to Stand Up back when it first was released. I personal wore out at least 10 copies of that album. I joined Columbia House Record Club and always order more of Stand Up, I still have 5 copies from CRC that have never been opened, if I only knew CD's would be the new thing in 15 years. I was fortunate to of had an uncle who had a record store so we got lots of really cool promo stuff. I still have many of them some of the most treasured ones are Thick As A Brick, and Stand Up. When I got older and first started to work I put half of what I made into music. So this is how my journey has began collecting Tull. I remember I loved import 45's or 7" most had some great picture sleeves and some even had songs that I had not heard. So every month I would get my Goldmine magazine and put magnifying glass to each page and put huge circles around any and all Tull items I could find. Some months where better than others I decided to concentrate on 45's. This was in days of snail mail, write to someone overseas to see if they had still had it and wait by the mailbox to get a reply. If all went well in 3 weeks you would go to the bank a get currency exchanged into whatever you need and mail it off, and hope that you where dealing with honest people. Then you would wait and finally get your package. This was always such a long processes, but this is how I built my collection at first. By the early 1990's I had around 125 Tull 45's and thought I surely must have most of them, things changed in life and I stopped collecting them. Then with internet boom and the ability to do business so much easier, I rekindled my interest in collecting. I started to realize that I did not have close to what I thought was out there. EBay really got me going full tilt again. My collection now stands at well over 500 plus counting doubles. From Africa to North, Central and South America, most all of Europe, the Middle East, to Australia, Japan and a few more countries large and small. I have meet some really great people along my journey in collecting my 45's. One of the last greatest find for me was Irish 7' Moth's/Beltane which was mislabeled. Over the years I have been on the Board I have shared some of my 7' collection, and in the process of adding all of them to The Boy Scout manual. Just when you think have collected all of the Bouree / Fat singles, you find out that there were three different rear sleeves. So now you have to search it out find the all the alternate sleeves. In the United Kingdom for example there can be up to 7 different version of the same 7", which can be madding to try and figure out what versions you have. Then you must pay such careful attention to the ones you have so as to duplicate them. Then there are the elusive ones that you always keep both eyes out for, and if you do see them it won't break the bank to acquire (Thick As A Brick dj UK, A Passion Play EP from Japan)to name a few.
So I was wondering what Jethro Tull items people collect. It would be interesting to hear others stories as how they got it started collecting.

I am always amazed at all the members here and their neat, organized and extensive collections or displays of Tull. Tull people are totally Type A, ha...

I used to collect anything I could get my hands on. Live audio and video, buttons, pins, posters, ads, 45's, programs, tee's, guitar picks, signed Shure Mic - you name it, for a while I used to collect anything I could get my hands on.

Apart from the usual stuff I began keeping cuttings from musical papers, magazines and the national press.
I think the earliest was a review of A Passion Play. Also some major interviews (4 & 5 pages long) Might be an idea one day to try and scan some of them if its all above board and legal.
Most unusual was probably a big piece of one of them balloons from around the time of Bursting Out, though last time I looked it had amalgamated into a big blob of rubber.

Oh TM you just posting reminded me...not really a collection, but I had sugar packets and stuff, you know, from the room with the coffee and bananas, and the beer bottle I was given. I may have parted with that stuff though, just kept the passes, etc.

Would love to see this. I have collected much Tull stuff but my thing was always live concert videos, of lots of music but mainly Tull! Around 1982 we RENTED a betamax player and the Slipstream tape. This was abig deal back then! A bunch of friends came over to watch it (in stereo) and I remember how amazed I was to be watching a Tull concert in our living room.

Thanks.. it's a labor of love..Darin has also done amazing work with the old silent 8mm film which was inspiring. For years I didn't know there was somone else as crazy about this stuff as I was! For a time I thought I was the only one who used to hook up 2 VCR's to my tape deck and sync bootlegs recordings to the picture. I still have those old tapes. Yikes! Once technology got better, everything got easier. You could now get more detailed and exact. It was still tedious work but more rewarding in the end. My entire video collection was once much more valuable to me before you could find nearly everything ever on youtube. And now even entire concerts are posted. 25 years of searching, trading, researching, purchasing, shipping, and now it's all available with one click. It's frustrating but it's great!

It is fantastic work, and without this Internet thingy how would we have got to see these gems in such quality. Being a Tull fan is exactly that, a Labour of Love, and, that's what this all is really all about isn't it, when you have this obssession that is Tull? Whether it be sharing it as many of us do, or keeping it to ourselves under lock and key. I have to say, I used to think it was just me, but clearly not. Never thought I'd join a chat board originally, never bothered with all those old groups that many people talk ill of, then I joined the Offical site, which was pretty great really; one roof for all fans to be under. Then when that folded I went elsewhere and then joined The Board. Not bad, plenty of Tull out there it seems. Then I got banned, don't know why really, no-one told me. But I'm still here and enjoy it more than ever despite the odd roller coaster ride every now and then. On the Tull collecting front, its more or less a bit of this and a bit of that, whatever takes my fancy really, I'm an obsessive collector of things nostalgic to me and my childhood I suppose. Apart from Tull, it's The Who and music generally, comic and pin up art and me and Mrs Q have an odd liking for things art deco. and I seem to collect reputations :-)

Great collection Derek. Personally I don't have that much stuff apart from all the vinyls.plus C.D's and DVD's of course. What I do collect a lot of is cigarette cards, mainly cricketers, some of them 19th Century, (Nerd alert).

Not much of a collector of Tulliana (or whatever the term is). Besides countless albums and CDs, the only thing I have is a July 22, 1971 Rolling Stone magazine (with Ian in white make-up and the title "Jethro Tull Might Do Something Weird" on the cover) signed by Ian Anderson on the Rubbing Elbows tour.
That's it. I've spent enough on the music.

Thats very nice of you to say Erin, though I think you've rightly shown yourself deserving of much higher praise. I was only interested in a few bits, your volume of stuff is killer. And yes I also had the 2 VCRs and cassette player hooked together counting 1,2,3,click! but that was high tech compared to 1973 watching super 8mm on a projector stopping and starting it while dropping the needle on the Supercharged LP and getting a tiny bit of "wow that went together for a second!!" As far as collecting stuff goes I've just always picked up what I could along the way, magazines, pictures and mostly bootleg recordings, which for me was just trying to recapture a bit of the buzz.

I also collect most anything Tull. Never gave it much thought just bought different stuff when I saw it- Then came e-bay and I discovered all those live recordings, man I spent some money. Then I discovered trading. All of a sudden I could trade in bulk with people around the world, that was great fun. People don't trade much anymore- the trade groups are dead and individual traders don'r often even respond when I e-mail. But, now we have torrents. I have thousands of live recordings, some great some horrendous! It's a collection and since Imet Darin I have a some of his amazing work.
Someone earlier mentioned that Tull people are Type As. I am type messy. I can't find anything! I used to have everything so neatly organozed then I movd- that was 2004 and somehow I just can't keep up anymore, maybe because now it's torrents and so much easier that it's not so revered?

I don't collect anything. Not anymore.I have noticed that stuff doesn't make me happy, quite the opposite. I'm in the middle of life at 45 and I think I should get rid of stuff before the end, so that my kids don't have to take it to the dumpster.
I can listen to music from Spotify. I don't need a physical disc. It is the music that matters. I still have all the old albums, but I have stopped buying new.

I live south of Atlanta, and have travelled to Macon to visit the Allman Bros. museum there at something called the "Big House", which the band lived in communally from 1970 to 73, the most formative and legendary period in their history. Its full of everything from Greg's old beat up Hammond organ to drum kits and guitars and amps and posters and pics letters and, well, everything you can and cant imagine. For a fan its a profound experience. Ive often thought how great it would be to have something comparable to this for Tull, like a Tull museum full of famous and iconic outfits used and instruments played and tons of memorabilia. Unfortunately nothing like this will probably ever exist because, unlike the Allmans, no central location or place has ever been quite so important to their history, so, where would you put it? I suppose the various Tull conventions will have to suffice in fulfilling this kind of thing.
Right now I am collecting anything I can, with emphasis on the 70's band spanning TAAB to Stormwatch. Most specifically I am collecting DVDs of live performances and documentaries of this era of Tull. My favorite so far is the '76 Tampa, Fla. show, which Im sure many here have and have seen. I am looking for any and all film footage of the 70's line-up in action.

I use to collect quite a bit of Tull memorablia. Programs, pins and patches, etc... But after awhile they got packed away, that wasn't right. I noticed there were fans out that would enjoy these items more than myself, so I sold a lot on ebay. Now I collect dust, wrinkles and boxes made entirely of wood. BB

I'm not selling anything here. And I dont have a "Ravina near Chigago" stub. But I just looked through my stash and I have Jethro Tull, Concord Pavilion, CA 9/24/1996. A Doane Perry autographed stub from Konoti Field Amph, CA 9/3/98. Marin Center, CA 9/1/00, and a San Jose Performing Arts 6/5/02. I've got more scattered around here somewhere. I'll try and find them all and post a pic.
Forgot all about them. Nice thread!
