John along with his brother Brian and with Mick Taylor (later of John Mayall and Rolling Stones), Ken Hensley (Uriah Heep keyboardist} and Joe Konas formed the The Juniors in 1962. Also at time the Juniors would perform as The Stranglers and with other members Alan Shacklock and Malcolm Collins. The Junior's signed to EMI/Columbia records and put out a single "There Is A Pretty Girl" in 1964.
By 1965 they changed their name to The Gods and in 1966 got a break and opened for The Cream. By early 1967 they had released a single on Polydor Records "Come On Down To My Boat Baby". The band was consisting of Mick, Ken, John,Joe,and added Lee Kerslake on drums. It was in the late spring that The Gods started go through major personnel changes, Mick got asked to join The John Mayall's Blues Project" John was replaced by Paul Newton in June and later Newton was replaced by Greg Lake who would leave in the summer of 68 to join King Crimson. It was at this time the band asked John to rejoin them. It was during this time span that the band recorded two albums and three singles. The albums where Genesis in 1968 and To Samuel A Son in 1969. The singles included their most successful , a Beatles song Hey Bulldog. They also did the song Maria (from West Side Story fame). The band's blend heavy organ and guitar riffs where there calling card.
Johns career went along with the changes that happened when The God's sort of fizzled out and along with Cliff Bennet, Ken Hensley, John Konas and Lee Kerslake Toe Fat was formed in June of 1969. They where the opening act for Derek and The Dominoes tour with the strength of their first single Workin' Nights backed with the Elton John song Bad Side Of The Moon. Although the first album Toe Fat got critical praise it did nothing commercially. Hensley left to join Uriah Heep, Kerslake left to join the National Head Band soon he would join Uriah Heep as well. Alan Kendall replaced Hensley and Brian Glascock would replace Kerslake at the drums. The band would release another album Toe Fat Two that did as poorly commercial as there first, They did release another single from the second album Brand New Band b/w Can't Live Without You.
After two years in Toe Fat John hooked up with Stan Webb of Chicken Shack from 1971 to 1972 John would perform with Stan, Pip Pyle and Paul Hancox on the drums. During this time John recorded the Imaginary Lady album and the single release from the album Poor Boy b/w Daughter of the Hills.
Carmen was a unique band in the world of music it was started by David Allen and his sister Angela in the Los Angeles area. His parents Mexican American had a restaurant where there was "Flamenco" music and dance performed there. This greatly influenced David who started Carmen as originally a seven piece band. The music was dependant on the dance as much as the music. Angela sang and was one of the dancers, along with Roberto Amaral. The other original members where Brian Glascock, Dennis Trerotola, Adam and Mark Moody, Rick Chavez and Mark Anthony. In the 1973 the band had relocated to London and caught the eye of such large artist David Bowie, Marc Bolan, and Bryan Ferry. Bowie was so impressed that he booked them on a David Bowie Midnight Special where they performed the song Bulerias. It was also during this time they recorded their first album Fandangos In Space which had little commercial success, but also lead to the release of two singles Bulerias b/w Stepping Stone and Flamenco Fever bw Lonely House. John wrote the song Retrindo.During much of 1974 Carmen was opening for Rush,ELO and Blue Oyster Cult With the second album Dancing On A Cold Wind John's writing credits included 3 songs Viva Mi sevilla,Purple Flowers and Remembrances. He also sang backing vocals on three songs as well The City, On A Cold Wind, and The Horseman. It was at the end of 1974 that Carmen seemed to get there big break opening for Tull for 3 month US tour, After the end of year of touring Carmen did their third and final album Gypsies it took two weeks to make and only got a United States release. John is credited the song High Time which he also sang lead vocals. As Carmen where waiting for their next tour (opening for The Stones) disaster struck. The band was staying at a converted barn studio at Long View Farms in Massachusetts, the drummer Paul's leg was crushed by a horse accident. With no money they drifted apart John left to join up with Tull. He was at the time still seeing Angela Allen who also sang backing vocals on Too Old To Rock Roll Too Young To Die.
John stayed with Tull until his sad passing on November 17 1979, while with Tull he was on TOTRNRTYTD, Songs From The Wood, Heavy Horses, Bursting Out and Stormwatch.
