Hello everyone.
I've been a fan of Jethro Tull since my father gave me my first JT records when I was 12 years old.
I listened to Aqualung through and through and it became my favorite album. Shortly after, me and my dad went to see Ian Anderson play here in Iceland with an orchestra. We had pretty bad seats but I was blown away by the music.
That was in 2005.
In 2007 Ian came to play in Iceland again and I managed to get front-row seats. It was truly amazing.
I waited outside (before the concert) in the pouring rain hoping to get my tour program signed only too find out from a security guard that the band entered the building from the front...silly me.
Again he came in 2009 and I went with a front row seat. The show was amazing but I didn't get a chance to meet him.
In 2012 he came and played two shows here in Reykjavík.
I went to both shows. The first one with my dad, the second one with my girlfriend.
Me and my dad were in the front row. But me and my girlfriend had balcony seats.
From the balcony we noticed that there were some empty seats in the second row so during the intermission we cheated a little and moved there and enjoyed the glory of Thick as a Brick 2 upclose!! (I really love that album)
Again I tried to meet Ian but it didn't work out.
BUT!!
In june this year, Ian came to Iceland again and played two shows. One in Akureyri and one in Reykjavík (my home)
I'd written off getting a drivers license after some pretty bad experiences.
But I pulled my shit together and got one so I could drive to Akureyri and see him, it takes around 6 hours to get there.
I went to the show with my girlfriend with first row seats. The crowd was pretty lame since it's a small town and not a lot of people knew many of the songs. I ofcourse knew each and everyone.
Outside the concert hall we met Florian, got our picture taken and I told him that I had driven all the way from Reykjavík for that one concert.
There was a man who was with him who thought that was fantastic.
While I was walking away I saw Ian getting in a black jeep with somebody and they drove away, I just barely missed him and I was devastated.
Two days later I saw them once again here in Reykjavík.
I was very glad that I had attended both concerts since they changed the setlist a little.
This time they didn't do "change of horses" or "Griminelli's lament" but did "One white duck" instead.
After the show I tried to get backstage only to be denied by the security guard. While I sadly walked away I met the man who had been with Florian outside the concert hall in Akureyri. He remembered me & invited me backstage...I was thrilled!
Backstage I met Florian again and the guys from the band.
I was looking around when suddenly I spotted Ian, talking to some guys.
They talked for a very long time and I waited patiently untill finally Ian walked away. He walked past me without even noticing me so I gently touched his shoulder and said "sorry, do you have a minute?" he said yes.
I pushed my elbow out and said "it's truly nice to finally meet you"
He seemed glad that I knew that he doesn't shake peoples hands and I had noticed that a lot of people that night tried to again and again.
I said "I just took my drivers license so I could drive to akureyri and see you for the 6th time"
Now I don't remember exactly what he said cuz I was soooo excited (and I had had a few beers) but he said that he didn't have a drivers license himself (I knew that) and that he didn't like driving straight ahead very fast because that scared him.
I said I knew that he didn't have a drivers license and that that used to give me some comfort, I had postponed getting one for over 3 years.
I also told him that I started playing the flute because of him, I then handed him a DVD I bought at the concert and asked if he would mind signing it for me. He said "of course!"
He signed it and then said "so you've got a drivers license and you play the flute, that's a good lad!"
I laughed and thanked him and then asked if I could get a picture & he said "sure, if you got a camera ready"
I pulled out my Iphone and handed it to the first person I saw and asked her to take our picture. Quick snap and then I thanked Ian again, pushing my elbow out. He rubbed it and walked away and got a beer.
That was truly the best night of my life
