Don't worry, it's not another release to empty your wallet, it's just an idea to compile the best of Tull with bi-boy Doane on the throne. Not necessarily Doane's best songs, but your favourite Tull songs during his tenure.
Of course songs that featured Gerry C. and Ian on the drum machine are out. Songs like: Steel Monkey, Budapest, Jump Start, Mountain Men, and Part of the Machine.
So how about we compile a list of let's say the best 15 tracks from the remaining songs on COAK, RI, Catfish, Roots and Dot Com, and state the reason you like the song.
Have to start with.....
Farm On The Freeway - love the somber mood and the anger that follows with Martin's guitar being featuring in this track. I also love the in-unison 'play' between Ian and Martin, as well as Martin's guitar stretching as the pavement now covers the old man's farm. Classic Tull. Real Tull.

Next song up is:
Said She Was a Dancer - I've never had an issue with Tull's Dire Straits sound, in fact I thought it suited the band well as they returned to the rock-based COAK, but now with a more mature sound. This one is just a very enjoyable listen, with familiar lyrics as Ian often sings about unrequited love. Martin's guitar answers Ian's vocals perfectly as they've done for so long. I never get tired of this one.

I always liked Gold tipped Boots, Black Jacket and Tie. It had that acoustic "Fat Man" feel to it (mandolin) along with a little electric slide guitar . The lyrics are somewhat silly or at least fun, no appearently deeper message going on, maybe a bit of being older and re inventing himself. "Fat wind in my sail, I'm turning again" I was actually searching for a nice lesser known of those three releases and this one fits the bill I think. Darin

Another CoaK track from me, and it's Mountain Men. CoaK stands out for me because it was an obvious return to form and seemed more an overall band contribution and sound than some of the previous [and later] releases.
I've always been drawn to Tull's more 'epic' pieces not necessarily in terms of length more towards the consumate switching between acoustic and electric that Tull does so well.

And Ian has never given up... always turning! An example for us all: Gold-Tipped Boots, Black Jacket And Tie: I'm battered and bruised I got lines I can't use My head won't deliver Well, I'm sold down the river But I'm turnin' again Yes an' I'm turnin' again Well, I'm turnin' again And I'm turnin' again Wearin' gold-tipped boots Black jacket and tie Black jacket and tie Well, I've been second to none This horse was ready to runNow I'm has-been and used Disarmed and de-fused But I'm turnin' again And I'm turnin' again Yes an' I'm turnin' again I'm turnin' again Wearin' gold-tipped boots Black jacket and tie Black jacket and tie Black jacket and tie Black jacket and tie I'm egg over-easy And I'm washing-up squeezyAppliance for sale Fat wind in my sail When I'm turnin' again Yes an' I'm turnin' again Well, I'm turnin' again Yes an' I'm turnin' again Wearin' gold-tipped boots Black jacket and tie Black jacket and tie
Black jacket and tie Black jacket and tie Black jacket and tie Well, I'm turnin' again...

This is also a favorite of mine!
Roll Yer Own:
Roll yer own. Don't mean you got no money. Only that you got no opportunity to shake it with that friend of mine. Roll yer own if you can't buy readymade; you won't be satisfied when you feel the sudden need to unwind. You know what moves you in the wee hours when there's nothing on the answerphone. And if you don't get enough of that electric love don't try to get by --- roll yer own, roll it when there's no-one listening: when those re-runs play on the late-night black and white TV. Roll yer own, roll it when there's something missing and those wild cats howl, running in the moonshine.
Roll yer own: you got to hit that spot. Roll yer own when your hands are hot.

Good excuse to post this video. I have no idea who this guy is, but I quite like this cover of Still Loving You Tonight. Its a very ...weary rendition, which I think suits the song well. Kinda lonesome.
As for me I really dig Another Night In The Wilderness Of You. Great lyrics, and entertaining vocals. Solid song... dunno why it was left off Catfish Rising!

Great thread idea Paul.
I'll have to put my vote to "Tall Thin Girl" as well as second Darin's "Gold Tipped Boots"
