I'm not sure if I've ever heard anyone discuss this, but as far as I know the versions of Aqualung and Locomotive Breath on MU are different than on the Aqualung album. Does anyone know the story behind these recordings?

That's a really good question--I noticed the same thing and yet have heard no one talk about it.
From what I can remember the production value of the two versions of Aqualung are very similar so I would guess they were made in the same studio/sessions. My memory doesn't serve me enough to recall the differences between the two Locomotive Breaths.
I wonder how many people were upset that they didn't sound like the one they heard on the radio.... I bet I would've been if I were a casual listener.

Aqualung starts with an extra "da da da da daaaa da" on MU and doesn't have that megaphone affect in the middle part. Locomotive Breath on MU has these extra Martin's guitar licks included as well as the a pulsating bass line that's more pronounced.

After about 15 minutes of research on it I couldn't find any significant information. It would have been a great question to ask Ian Anderson back when he was taking questions for the Q&A. I wonder if Terry Ellis would be the man to ask.

Greg Russo in his book Flying Colours: The Jethro Tull Reference Manual (remastered edition) discusses the Aqualung album on page 75 where he says, “A quadrophonic version of the album made the racks in 1974 … In addition to featuring different mixes … an alternative … take of Wind-Up was used … The version of Aqualung on … M.U. The Best Of Jethro Tull and Original Masters albums included an alternative mix that had only one guitar riff at its beginning and it was missing the ‘transistor radio’ [voice] effect …”

These are the quad versions. Loco breath definitely sounds better. I'd replace most of side 2 of aqualung with different versions. Hymn, loco, my god. All are 10-20% better. Try them out and you will agree after a while ?. I prefer the old version of wind up also.
