Still another 8 songs I'm yet to hear. Unless waltz of the Angels is Warchild waltz. Then that would make it 7

What happened to the WARCHILD post I made earlier today...seems to have gone? Try again.. PROS: Now received and I have had a quick listen to the main album 5.1 and new mixes, plus snippets from the additional and orchestral material All lovely of course and once again Steve Wilson has done a nice job of keeping things similar and yet improved...removing some extraneous IMO FX bits and upping some of the strings arrangements, guitars and drums balance to make a cohesive sounding whole. I had hoped to hear more clarity of the odd bits..but still cannot make out that "Formic Acid?" sound byte thing...what is that phrase?? So a big thumbs up! Even "Third Hoorah" and "Bungle.."which have never been faves of mine sound much nicer CONS:Once again the 5.1 visuals...(See my previous comments on the APP set) sorry...they are just boring...having the same few photos running on constant cycle means by the time you get to "Skating Away..." it becomes tedious Why not at least display the lyrics for each song? or do it properly and make it more entertaining or informative (See Gentle Giants recent 5.1 "Power & the Glory" for a good example). The photos are very nice it has to be said, but I'd rather just have an option on the disc to view these... However, as it is the MUSIC which is most important after all, this is still a fab thing to own and play. Recommended naturally

Mine arrived yesterday. Looks great. Love this book style packaging. I'll wait to listen to mine until I have a night to myself, bottle of wine, take my time. Savour the rare joy of unreleased classic Tull.

i had a pretty mixed reaction to this remix compared to some of the others. comparisons so far include mfsl and the new remix (both in mp3) on headphones (ear plugs) and stereo.
its worth noting im frequently dissatisfied with elements of the drum mix on most tull albums. there are improvements on the remix, but there are actually some parts that are lacking even compared to the original. namely, the bass drum on bungle in the jungle. a couple of spots on the toms in sealion. im probably willing to say for the overall album its an improvement, but bungle in the jungle really sinks my rating.
by now steve wilson seems to have a somewhat predictable (in a neutral sense) approach to mixing the vocals. this is really a case of what suits the listener. id consider it unfair of myself to give a rating at this point having been used to the original mix for so many years, but id say there are two or three songs where the original production simply sounds better to my ear.
it seems to me on this and virtually every steve wilson remix, the pianos and guitars are all improved, 99% of the time (i didnt care for some of the remixing of to cry you a song). bass is neutral to improved.
i would also note in virtually every case, wilson makes better use of stereo than the original mix. this is most evident with use of headphones.
i didnt see anything startling like the raised solo in to cry you a song.
its not a remix like aqualung or chateau where i instantly decide i can never listen to the original again. its definitely a remix for people who like to do the side by side comparisons. again, headphones seem to bring out far more nuance than a stereo, if not particularly on this album.
bonus tracks did a fair amount for me, and are increasingly, for me, a reason to buy the reissues. personally, i really dig tomorrow was today, but im not in love with the middle eighth. it also leaves me curious what extra tracks will turn up on the minstrell remix since there have been multiple songs released now that no one otherwise knew about, yet there doesnt seem to be a ton left for the minstrell reissue. ill also say im now looking even more forward to future remixes as i tend to think tull mixes go pretty downhill beginning with songs from the wood.

I'm probably being unrealistic in holding out hope that a DVD of the Paris, July 1975 concert may accompany the Minstrel reissue, it would be the perfect place for it.

Yes, I was thinking about that myself. Have you listened to the new Warchild? If so what do you think of the remaster?

Yes, I think Steven is working to a formula in the 5.1 remixes, but that does bring some consistency to each album. For example, I notice when Ian's vocals are double-tracked, they appear centre front, and centre rear. But the surround is nicely balanced, with a few special effects, but not too much. I thought the guitar solos at the beginning of Two Fingers were too subdued, which is a shame. The Quad mixes are interesting, but they will have to wait as well. I will report more after further listening. I usually wait for the vinyl before I review the stereo mix. (!)
Even though they are only 8 track masters, I'd still like to see This Was and Stand Up get this treatment, maybe even as a double package. I think I'm turning into Sheldon (from BBT), as I wish Aqualung was released in this maxi DVD format so I could line it up with the others!
I think TOTRR really needs the SW treatment, as it has always sounded very flat and subdued.

I meant to add, the Warchild booklet is very interesting. Skating and Solitaire are from the Chateau sessions, whereas I imagined they were re-recorded. I wonder if they are different takes, as they still are different to the SW APP versions?

Just received my boxset. I reckon Good godmother is cooler than Tomorrow was today . On the dvd, I can't hear the quads at all but I can hear everything else on that dvd. Is my dvd faulty?

I tried the quads on my DVD player and they worked. Is the quad of bungle the same as the version on the 25th anniversary tull box set?

I just listened to the boxset and thoroughly enjoyed it. There is something very "Tullish" about the heavy use of strings in the music, in fact I found I enjoyed the orchestral music on the "Second Act" CD almost as much as the Warchild album itself. Just listen to the orchestral version of the Third Hoorah and Field Dance - they're beautiful. I remember loving the music that played as the lights went out before Tull shows began - Field Dance for the Warchild concert and Quartet before the Songs From the Wood show. What other rock band could conceive such amazing arrangements?
I had hoped that Tomorrow was Today would be on par with the explosive version played during the early 1972 concerts, unfortunately it is well tamed-down here; Good God Mother is a good listen in that it is a new Tull tune from that great mid-seventies period, but I can see why it didn't make it on the Warchild album.
The sound on the whole package is a definate upgrade even from the remastered Warchild released ten or more years ago. I haven't had time to yet to read the book that accompanies the CDs but the concert photos bring back some great memories of one of the greatest stage performances I ever saw.

I made this a double album on my iPod.
WarChild Queen and Country Ladies Back-door Angels SeaLion Skating Away on the Thin Ice of the New Day Bungle in the Jungle(quad) Only Solitaire The Third Hoorah Two Fingers
Paradise Steakhouse Saturation Good Godmother SeaLion II Quartet WarChild II Tomorrow Was Today Glory Row March, The Mad Scientist Rainbow Blues
Disc 2 is definitely better to me. I replaced Bungle with its quad version because the vocals give it a much meaner feel. I think 2 fingers, third hoorah and sealion can be a bit too cheerful sounding and they were a bit overbearing on the single album but they come up better on a strong double album. I also added 6 orchestral tracks(waltz, mime, beach 1 & 2, hoorah, warchild and pan). No use adding the demos and non Morgan versions.

Shit, I can't really join in the conversation because my wife decided that the boxset is my Christmas present (ok, no surprise, but a good present) BUT this is so true: Just listen to the orchestral version of the Third Hoorah and Field Dance - they're beautiful.
