Got a good Tull road trip story to tell? Who amongst us doesn't? So who wants to start? Jeff Not really a good road trip story, but I'll start off. I graduated High School in 1980 and visited my brother who lives in Montana and I ended up getting a job with an oil exploration company and moved to a little town called, Carson, North Dakota. The album, (not cd) 'A' came out while I was out there and my friends back in Schenectady were going to see Tull at Madison Square Garden and I was bummed that I couldn't go with them. Of course, back in that day, there was no internet access and the only way to find out venue information was to call, long distance, to find out where bands were playing. The closest venue was in St. Paul, Minnesota which was pretty far away for someone with no car. I bartered a case of beer to friends to drive me to the capital of No. Dak, Bismarck to take a bus to St. Paul. I arrived early and scoped out the venue and could hear Eddie Jobson's rehearsing on keyboard. I checked a few locked doors and went the box office and asked to see if I could see where my seats were located. The box office lady said I couldn't because ,"The band were rehearsing". I politely left and while she was distracted and headed for the stage. The band was rehearsing and I sat in about the 15th row (alone) and watched the band rehearse. Ian was sipping what I believe was a Heineken beer and if I recall, strummed some of Wondring Aloud (which wasn't played) and Eddie did some Black Sunday keyboards for tune up. Sitting alone in the center, while other workers or guests, were sitting off to the side seats, Ian noticed me and I waved and was escorted out happily a few minutes later. The Midwest didn't seem to be the hot bed for Tull activity and I ended up with 10th row seats and even closer when Ian came down ramps at the end of each side. These were heaven seats after sitting behind the stage at Madison Square Garden in '78 and at the opposite end , a world away @msg in '79. I remember thinking how out of place songs like, Songs From The Wood, Heavy Horses and Bungle felt while dressed in their space age jumpsuits. I didn't like the Locomotive Breadth version which is heard on many bootlegs but the 'A' stuff was great! In what seems to be a recurring theme, I spent too much on travel and Tee shirts , and in blatant disregard for shelter , wandered the streets of St. Paul until the next morning to catch my bus. Now , older , married, crustier-how fun was that!

I guess the furthest I went for Tull was Albany. We left and as we're going through CT, I called Dan to say we were on our way. I told Kenneth we had to drive slower. He said that an old man riding on the back of a snail just passed us. Highways and long trips make me nervous though...We got an off exit to look for a fast food place, even though there was a sign, we never found the place. So got back on the highway. Got to Albany, looked for a gas station. Called Dan to ask if he knew of one. He did not. Apparently there are no gas stations in Albany. Stood outside shivering for awhile. Sang Cross Eyed Mary and embarrassed Kenny. Went in, found seat, found Dan and daughter, then TM and Billy Fingas. TM and I informed the staff that I had a backstage invite. Staff got snotty. TM went outside to smoke cigars and whatever...btw, the Palace staff in Albany are all insane. Really. First half of show was acoustic Tull, the second half "made our ears bleed" and I quote that from IA...The acoustic stuff makes me a little sleepy...noticed Dan's daughter seemed a little sleepy too. Did I mention we had front row! I made it so my cell phone had recorded My God (and used this for my ring for months afterwards and to annoy people) Towards the end we all jumped the wall to rush the stage but got in big trouble with staff...actually TM and the bouncer spent like the rest of the show yelling at eachother. After the show we were out in the street and somehow managed to get James to come outside and then get our passes and let us in. Now...some of you have heard this a million times so I'll do the abbreviated version and leave out how I was starstruck unless others want more deets...went inside, TM and Kenny with the rotten bananas and coffee, Holly, Andy upstairs, meet IA, "you're really a fan?" back downstairs, "Andy when's there going to be a new album?", done. yay. Started trip back home. Called TM on the way to ask where he was at. Started to get overtired...whereas I get pretty silly. Stopped for cigarettes or something (no I do not smoke anymore) and then forget to get them and got something else instead...drove for a little while...stopped at a gas station again. Stopped at McDonald's. They had only a couple things you could get at that time in the am, and like only one kid was working and playing horrible heavy metal or something. I cracked up at some old guy coming out of McD's. Then we were driving again and stopped for a donut, but they were all disgusting looking and the person working there had no idea what I was talking about, I don't think he spoke much English language...then we stopped for an iced coffee for me. I told Kenny we'd never get home because we were stopping every five minutes. Kenny said we must be getting close to home because we could smell Nat's fish tank. Kenny's cousin was living with us for awhile and he had this nasty fish tank that he wouldn't clean...I think we got home at 3 am. The next day I was really tired but had tickets to do the Tull thing all over again! At PPAC. Was super tired when I talked to TM who wanted to know if we wanted to get something to eat...but I needed to sleep so I told him we'd see him later. Which we did, and then my best friend Jen joined us too. And since this last part is even part of the trip, I'll end it there...even though the next night was awesome too! So...not the most exciting thing...but definitely memorable for myself!

So let's see, you were working for an oil exploration company living in a small town in North Dakota, you traded a case of beer for a ride to Bismarck where you hopped on a bus to St Paul, then snuck into the sound check, heard a little private Tull concert before being noticed by, and waving to, Ian, later got tenth row seats and afterward roamed the streets of St.Paul all night. That's what I would call a great story, Dan! Dan, That is a GREAT story. Had you NOT waved to Ian, I suspect you would have remained for the rest of the rehearsal. MaxQuad.

Okay, I'll tell a road story of sorts. Summer of 1976. More precisely late July. Let's start with the Tull show at Shea Stadium. I told the whole story on the old chat board. Horrible day, girl friend dumped me, the weather sucked, got lost driving to Shea, some dick lights my parka on fire during the show. The show was just one big downer. I had a bad taste in my mouth. Needless to say, I wasn't in a very good mood into early August. In August, I had plans to travel to various parts of Canada and the northwestern US with a high school buddy. He was starting to lose interest in Tull. We drove his Volkswagon bug, smoking pot and drinking beers through Toronto, Michigan, North Dakota, The Badlands, Mt. Rushmore, Vancouver, Victoria Island, The North Cascades. By the third week or so we were in Portland, Oregon. I discovered Tull was playing an indoor show and I convinced my buddy we should go. And go we did. Starcastle opened. We had decent seats, but at a certain point, I just bolted down to the front of the stage and stayed there for quite a while. It was awesome seeing the band that close up, it was almost surreal. Anyway, that show picked up my "Tull" spirits and I eventually moved on from getting dumped and lit on fire.

July 1988 I was (again) travelling on Interrail with some friends. We had checked out earlier that Jethro Tull plays in Nürnberg Germany on July 9. That also happened to be my 21st birthday. It was the 20th anniversary tour. They had a banderoll on stage that said "Oh no not another 20 years of Jethro Tull". Ok, now it is another 21 years already. How time flies. And I thought they were older than Moses already then.
They played a wonderful set. Highlights were for instance acoustic "Fat Man" and of course "aqualung" and "Locomotive Breath". Pegg was still in band then. After the set they were rushed out from the stage on stretchers by paramedics. They returned for encores and sent us big balloons (similat to the cover of "Bursting Out". A great show and my first ever by Tull.
Other bands included Alvin Lee and Ten Years Later, Starship (what crap) and I remember Noel Redding was there too with some band.
I had a lot of whisky and was very drunk after the festival. I remember being angry at my friends and wanting to go to sleep in the bushes. They persuaded me to come with them to sleep in the yoith hostel which was in a great medieval castle.
Over half of my life has happened after that and it feels like it was yesterday.

I saw it at Jones Beach, and then again at the old Pier 54 in NYC, where they used to have concerts every summer until those damn Jersey-ites across the river started complaining about all the "noise." (Could be anecdotal, though.) I only put the dancing chile pepper there so people would realize I wasn't seriously dissing Jersey-ites! Jeff

Just like Dan...I had to scuffle to get to the A tour...the posters in germany had all the dates and I had tickets to see them in Hamburg...but a few days before that...i just couldn't take it...so on a whim...alone...instead if going to work, I got off the commuter train in the main station...took a different train to the edge of town...hitchiked quickly to Dortmund...and almost exactly like Dan's story: ...being a long haired American who looked very rock n roll authorized to the staff at the venue...shuffled in and helped myself to the sound check till Ian himself spotted me and had me politely booted out. A great night...all alone and fully focussed. Hitched thru the nite in time to get to work unshaved, unrested and happy as could be with two more dates on the tour to look forward to.
