I thought that Tull fans might be interested in the original songs of my 18 year old son Rob. Rob likes Tull and has seen them some 10 times over the years. He says that he has drawn inspiration from Ians lyrics. Rob is not playing live at the moment concentrating upon his studies ,but continues to write songs on a frequent basis.

I have to listen to these again....I sampled them a month or two ago on the other board and remember liking them a lot. And I think his lyrics are really thought-provoking and well written.

Puzzle : a song about life
[/youtube]
In Rob's words Me playing 'Puzzle', one of my own songs.
It's probably the most personal song I've ever written.
Hope you like it- please rate and leave comments.
Nice One
Words & Music by Rob Davies
Lyrics-
You tell me that I am always behind closed doors, Well that's as maybe, but I didn't see you opening yours, Next time I'm craving a puzzle with an answer to find... Perhaps the perfect starting point would be the intracacies of your mind...
And I can't solve your puzzle on my own, I've tried in vain and failed every time. But next time that we find ourselves alone, An answer to your puzzle I will find.
Look at me! See me sinking. Balancing the tight-rope in my mind. A lack of confidence from time to time, But I've got a kind heart and a decent sense of rhyme!
Look at me! I'm- clearly struggling, Balancing the tight-rope in my mind. A lack of confidence from time to time, But I've got a kind heart and a decent sense of rhyme!
But that is not enough- and so it's clear... The answer to your puzzle is a mystery and it always was my dear.
Attempted a jigsaw puzzle for the first time in years, Hoped it would provide distraction from the voice in my ears, Your voice, a constant reminder of where I went wrong, And how an absence from your presence is not something I would like to prolong.
But I can't solve your puzzle on my own, I've tried in vain and failed every time. But next time that we find ourselves alone, A solution to your puzzle I will find.
Persistence won't prevail and so it's clear... The answer to your puzzle is unreachable and this is what I fear...

This songs about a girl and a boy. Its called Under Your spell
In Robs words Me playing 'Under Your Spell', one of my own songs.
Hope you like it- Please rate and leave comments.
nice one
Words & Music by Rob Davies
Lyrics-
Well it couldn't have gone on for much longer... With every moment that you're straying, the feeling only becomes stronger. And jealousy is a powerful tool. It will succeed in making one boy look like such a fool.
This house is so much darker than it was before... I mean there's ashes on the ceiling, It feels like smoke is rising from the floor. And won't you put that smile away, Yeah the one that's clinging to your pretty face.
It's not a time for smiling, Can't you see what you've done?
Although you may not realise it, We'd all be fools to deny it. You've got us all. Firmly under your spell.
As you approached me in the hallway as I entered, Immediately, I was reminded of our previous adventures... But I shall lock such thoughts away. Keep them in a box, save them for a rainy day.
And so I'm sitting in the corner, you parade about the place. Maintain a dignified expression on my slowly creasing face. And won't you put that smile away? Yeah the one you give me every single day.
It's not a time for smiling, Can't you see what you've done?
Although you may not realise it, We'd all be fools to deny it. You've got us all. Firmly under your spell...

An old happy / sad song entitled Clash of Personalities
In Rob's words
Me playing one of my own songs 'Clash of Personalities'.
This tune's been knocking about for ages now and was one of the favourites on the myspace. Still fun to play now though so thought i would do a video!
Hope you like it- Please rate and leave comments.
nice one
Words & Music by Rob Davies
Lyrics-
He blatantly! Only liked her 'cos she liked him. Suspicously! It's always answer phone when she rings him up.
She worked so hard. Always eager to do her best. He played guitar... Win or lose at life- couldn't care less.
Such a mess.
A Clash of Personalities, Never gonna work. The boy is being ignorant and he's- treating her like dirt.
Somebody's bound to get hurt.
It started off so well... No sign of conflict- you just couldn't tell. Started off so well... No sign of conflict- you just couldn't tell- at all.
But then the cracks appeared... The whole thing felt so weird... Yeah the cracks appeared.
And yes it went downhill. She became hard to thrill. Yeah the cracks appeared... The romance had disappeared.
A Clash of Personalities, Never gonna work. The boy is being ignorant and he's- treating her like dirt.
Somebody's bound to get hurt.
Now he goes out. Always flirting with the other girls. She screams and shouts, Wondering where he is- hasn't a clue.
She still works hard, And she's so lucky- her future is made. He plays guitar. And all he wants to do now is get laid...
A Clash of Personalities, Never gonna work. The boy is being ignorant and he's- treating her like dirt...
I'll tell you what he deserves. That boy's treating her like dirt. That boy deserves to get hurt...

A couple of new songs have been posted by Rob. He has another eight or so in the pipeline. He wanted to try and challenge himself ...so these songs are rather different in style.
First up
This Girl must fly
The ending Rob says was inspired by Ian .
Words & Music by Rob Davies
Lyrics-
So patiently she's waiting- her hands by her sides, She's anticipating- he's soon to arrive, How she hopes that he won't be led astray tonight.
Seconds feel like hours, a momentary stir, Don't listen to those whispers, don't tangle on your words, A night of expectation has left her feeling cursed...
He's taken so long, so what has gone wrong tonight? He's taken so long, so what has gone wrong this time?
Well I don't know. And you don't know. An increased delay- so the feeling grows, But we'll hide away and pretend... It never happened.
Her confidence is countered as she begins to think, Casual indifference but she is on the brink, With every passing moment her heart appears to sink.
A smile is so revealing, that sour gaze is there, Why say that you're not bothered- it's evident you care, Slowly evaporating until she is not there.
He's taken so long, so what has gone wrong tonight? He's taken so long, so what has gone wrong this time?
Well I don't know. And you don't know. An increased delay- so the feeling grows, But we'll hide away and pretend... It never happened.
This girl must fly...
(And if she fails to fly, then hopefully she will realise...)
Enjoy any feedback on any of his songs will be appreciated. What is this song about ?

Next up is The Delicate Persuasion Hope you enjoy who can spot the Tull influence ?
Words & Music by Rob Davies
Lyrics-
The moment is upon us; it's been stirring for so long, A silent inclination to preserve it in a song, We're here and it is now but something lingers on our minds, A delicate persuausion of its kind.
Here in lies the problem can't you see? The stark, unmoving differences between you and me.
So conversation loiters as it fails to progress, And hoping I would be exempt from this unwanted stress, Attention slowly dawns upon a notion in your mind, A delicate persuasion of its kind.
Here in lies the problem can't you see? The stark, unmoving differences between you and me.
(And so I tell you)
I am not like you. You are not like me. Can we be happy? Will we falter now or will we co-exist in harmony?

Hi, Preston, I have been meaning for some time to devote a block of time to listen to all of Rob's vids. I have listened to three or four....all quite good, and I am especially impressed with his lyrics. I'm very big on lyrics, as you know. I cannot really enjoy a band's music that much unless their words mean something to me. I will give these two a listen tonight!

I llistened to this one (Delicate Persuasion), and let me tell you, that was excellent, Preston! Very well sung and I liked the minor chord progression and the lyrics. He uses nice simple rhymes, and his songwriting is mature beyond his years. I'll listen the other one this evening.

Like I said in my comments on Delicate Persuasion, his rhymes are simple and good, not multi-syllabic, so whether consciously or not he has an understanding of how to write lyrics. I also like the fact that the lyrics take a particular subject -- in this case despair over suspicions of an unfaithful partner, and yet inability to leave the damaging relationship -- and really capture the essence of that sinking, depressing feeling. Very nice song. Jeff

Thanks for your constructive feedback Jeff.I have discussed this with Rob....he agrees and will try to develop this. Having said that Rob went out that very day and wrote this new tune. Rob said that he wanted to write something in a brash clunky style whilst still retaining a memorable catchy chorus and a distinct middle 8. Its a tune I really didnt like at first but has grown on me. I cannot get the hook out of my head. I like the part at 2 mins 39
In Robs words Hope you Like it - please rate and leave comments.
Nice one.
Words & Music by Rob Davies Lyrics-
You enquire- will I be attending? But I'm not there... And remind, that our chapter is ending, But I'm never there...
My absence isn't for attention, Nor am I seeking an applause, I'm Just indifferent to the mention, Aspire to set my own laws...
And obviously, you don't know me well enough, if you think that I care, And quite honestly- there's no need to be alarmed, if I'm not there, It's nothing personal- it's just the way I am, Frightfully trivial (in the scheme of things)- it's just the way I am.
I'm not there.
So we'll sit back and we'll reminisce across The Murky Sea, And locate the point in time that you went and lost your dignity... You may think that I am bitter? You must assume that I am bored? By contrast your life seems so littered, My peace of mind can be assured...
And obviously, you don't know me well enough, if you think that I care, And quite honestly- there's no need to be alarmed, if I'm not there, It's nothing personal- it's just the way I am, Frightfully trivial (in the scheme of things)- it's just the way I am.
I'm not there.
(And you say) You've done it again, you've gone and done it again- You weren't there. You've done it again, you've gone and done it again- You're never there. You've missed it again, you've gone and missed it again- Should've been there. You've missed it again, you've gone and missed it again- Why weren't you there?
But obviously, you don't know me well enough, if you think that I care, And quite honestly- there's no need to be alarmed, if I'm not there, It's nothing personal- it's just the way I am, Frightfully trivial (in the scheme of things)- it's just the way I am.
I'm not there
Hope you enjoyed it

A simple light sing along song with a catchy hook and a touch of small cigar influence at the end.
In Robs words
Me playing 'At Least He Thinks So...', one of my own songs.
Hope you like it- please rate and leave comments.
Nice one.
Words & Music by Rob Davies
Lyrics-
From the moment that he entered the equation- I could tell you would fall head over heels for him, And so I watch with caution from the corner of my eye, Made a quite concerted effort to conceal and disguise my gaze... My gaze, my gaze.
You found his gaze beguiling as he stared into your eyes, Although he views you as a trophy, a possession, a prize. Just another token to display on his wall at home...
So have you worked out his little game? Have you established his number, ascertained his first name? These pretty boys are all the same...
So will he leave you in the lurch? Or will he treat you kindly, 'cos he discovered you first- at least he thinks so.
At least he thinks so...
And while it is quite obvious he had a certain charm, I was in a situation where I'd happily disarm, His guile and charisma, Weapons rendered useless in this war...
So your looking around, take your eyes off the ground, It's clear that you will not acknowledge my frown, But I'm persisting... Yes I'm persisting...
So have you worked out his little game? Have you established his number, ascertained his first name? These pretty boys are all the same...
So will he leave you in the lurch? Or will he treat you kindly, 'cos he discovered you first At least he thinks so.
At least he thinks so...
I'd like to tell you something, or are you pre-occupied? A thought pervading notion- which this tired facade can't hide, I'd love to tell you- exactly what I think of him, But I'm very aware that if I do that then he'll be 'quids in'...
At least he thinks so...
And that's what makes him so...
Appealling to you.
(Nonchalance is quite a virtue, Or at least that's how it seems, So maybe I should lighten up, And endeavour to achieve...)

I worked out how to upload Mp3 files to You tube. Here is an old song of Robs .
Whats Right for You.
Its probably my favourite of all the things he has ever written.
Hope you enjoy it. Would love to know what you think
Whats Right For You Words and music by Rob Davies
On a park bench , he waited after his day at work. And as the hours went by, he sighed at the sky, and wrote her name in the dirt. Then the realisation hit and he made his way home. Words from a text like, poison ivy in his heart, growing out of his phone. And we all said ! And we all said ! And we all said ! Don't worry ! Don't worry ! It will be ok After all, she wasn't right for you, right for you Don't worry ! Don't worry ! No It will be ok Mate Cos After all she wasn't right for you, anyway What's right for you ? What's right for you ? What's right for you ? What's right for you ? What's right for you ? What's right for you ? On the bus she's in torment Does not know what to do Because she shrugged him off again and, again Does not want to appear rude With him she's unfulfilled She's got time to kill And all her mates will say You could do so much better anyway She knows what to do. She knows where her heart is The boy she met last night is somewhat so much more enchanting She knows what to do. She knows where her heart is The boy she met last night is somewhat so much more enchanting Don't worry ! Don't worry ! It will be ok After all she wasn't right for you, right for you So Don't worry ! Don't worry ! It will be ok Mate Cos After all she wasn't right for you, anyway What's right for you ? What's right for you ? What's right for you ? What's right for you ? What's right for you ? What's right for you ? Don't like to see you so down No No No Where there was always a smile Now there's a frown Don't worry ! Don't worry ! It will be ok Mate Cos After all she wasn't right for you, right for you, anyway.
And now posted within this thread is a live radio version of this song

Carrying on the theme of discarded demos and work in progress songs from Rob. Here is another of Robs songs that I really like despite the off key key vocal in the first line. Rescued from total obscurity Here it is in all its first and only take glory Hand reaching out through the glass (aka windy trail ) Any chance of having some comments , friends and subscribers on my You tube Rob outake channel ? Words and music by Rob Davies Well I was born in winter And summer came to fast But when I opened my eyes Eighteen years had past Looking over your shoulder Staring across the fields The grass is always greener on the other side That's how I used to feel Staring out of my window Hand reaching out through the glass Start looking to the future I know I should Stop dwelling on the past I am meandering forever floundering On the windy trail of my life Find it frightening Half enlightening On the windy trail , On the windy trail On the windy trail On the windy trail of my life I never thought the path that I would choose to take Would lead me with a sense that My efforts were half baked Looking over your shoulder Staring across the fields The grass is always greener on the other side That's how I used to feel Staring out of my window Hand reaching out through the glass Start looking to the future I know I should Stop dwelling on the past I am meandering forever floundering On the windy trail of my life Find it frightening Half enlightening On the windy trail , On the windy trail On the windy trail On the windy trail of my life That might be his best song yet, Preston, both lyrically and musically. I don't think I've heard him do one before with a soft edge like that one. I think that with just a little refinement, (maybe change the take/bake rhyme) that song could be copyrighted and sold to a major recording artist. It's just very, very good. I will try to get over to your you tube channel when I get a chance and post the same comment over there. Jeff

Jeff thank so much for the positive comments about 'Hand reaching out through the glass'
I am so glad that I rescued it and the other demos from destruction.
Thanks again for allowing me to post Robs music on this board. He appreciates your support and that of other Tull fans. He just wants his music to be heard. Coming up very soon is a new song called 'Drifting Away' recorded today. Its epic in length and performance and I think Tull fans will really appreciate it. Look out for it soon and please comment on it

Hope you like this
Drifting
Words & Music by Rob Davies
Lyrics-
I look around me in this room now, There is an absence in the air. To which the people seem oblivious, And even you don't seem to care.
You roll your eyes in disapproval, When I identify these facts. And lock away the things you don't want to hear, The things that fail to make you laugh.
It's not the way... It's not the way... It used to be...
(I remember times before, Before those hazy days, When everything was crystal clear, That glow upon your face.)
But not today... You're drifting away...
So close your eyes if you're not listening, It seems I'm only here to talk. Can't you see that we are drifting? Faster, further as we walk.
We'll meet again on new horizons, Appreciate this as you stare. But right now this is far from our minds, There is an absence in the air.
It's not the way... It's not the way... It used to be...
(I remember times before, Before those hazy days, When everything was crystal clear, That glow upon your face.)
But not today... You're drifting away...
Had my chance and then I blew it, Who's to blame? Regardless, there was nothing to it, Who's to blame? Who's to blame? Who's to blame? Who's to blame? ...

In Robs words
Me playing 'And On Returning...', one of my own songs.

Nice one.
Words & Music by Rob Davies
Lyrics-
And on returning from his misdirection, He may be quite far removed. He may have altered beyond recognition, Therefore you must not assume...
That he'll be the same, For these things can change- although you would hope that they'd last. An absent mind can be very unkind, It's time to let go of the past...
When he was your boy, You were his girl, You're so keen to remind, You'll proclaim this to all of the world.
And on returning from his misdirection, He may be utterly crass. He may be vulgar or truly obnoxious, At all the wrong times he may laugh.
He won't hold your hand, He'll be callous and bland, (compared to the boy you once knew). Maintain hope, a light- until day reaches night, Then you will know you are through.
But he was your boy, You were his girl, You're so keen to remind, You'll proclaim this to all of the world.
That he was your boy, You were his girl, Once Upon A Time, You'll proclaim this to all of the world

Robs Aqualung Its been a long time since I posted a song by Rob ..He is away studying and has put his songwriting on hold. This song is from the vaults. The front Gate is a demo tune that I have rescued from the bin.
Rob does not like it at all , ... He thinks it is crap
As a work in progress , I think it has potential and should be heard . It certainly has a cynical and gritty aspect to it inspired by Tulls Aqualung character . No lyrics you will have to work them out

No lyrics you will have to work them out Best Preston I like it because of the interesting and atypical chord progressions, and I think he sings it very well. A suggestion would be some variance in the volume as opposed to the constant volume level at which he plays and sings this one. The lyrics are interesting, a little baffling because it goes "he takes his time, he won't be late, she knows he'll be waiting for her at the front gate", whereas I would have expected the words to be "she" takes her time, not "he". But the essence of it seems to be that she is being unfaithful to him, or taking advantage of him, I think. I'll have to listen to the words more closely for further clues. Jeff

Here is an alternative version of Keep your Receipt
Lyrics-
She's the girl everyone says they like, but no one really knows... Kind of girl who seems to believe that- on trees money grows. Just because of Daddy's wealth, she thinks she's got it made, One would feel just to look on her face that- you ought to pay.
And she's rather alarming, Yes she's really a treat! Dare you to converse with her Just expect a receipt!
KEEP YOUR RECEIPT
Don't attempt to befriend her- you will quickly get bored, If your hair isn't perfect- she'll look appalled, A penchant for designer- no high street for her, It's so hard to define her- without struggling for words.
But she's oh so alarming, Yes she's really a treat! Dare you to converse with her Just expect a receipt!
I can't be doing with your shallow ways, You've left me with a terrible malaise, And now I find it hard to get to sleep, For fear I'll be offered a receipt.
But she's oh so alarming, Yes she's really a treat! Dare you to converse with her, Just expect a receipt!
Oh she's really alarming, Yes she's really a treat! Dare you to converse with her, Just expect a receipt

But it won't be long 'til you are happy... When you see me slipping through the door, No it won't be long 'til you are satisfied... And the boy before you is no more.
Why do I have to see you every single day? Yes, I try to ignore you but cannot refrain, From asking you questions- I'm establishing 'the order of your day'. Well ignorance is bliss- but you're so astute, that you can tell when I am certain or I don't have a clue, An inquisitive nature is never going to have an effect on you.
But I'm standing here before you and I don't know what to do. Yes I'm standing here before you I'm uncertain what to do And I'm hiding all emotion but you haven't got a clue.

A slightly rearranged version of Puzzle
Words & Music by Rob Davies
Lyrics-
You tell me that I am always behind closed doors, Well that's as maybe, but I didn't see you opening yours, Next time I'm craving a puzzle with an answer to find... Perhaps the perfect starting point would be the intricacies of your mind...
Persistence won't prevail and so it's clear... The answer to your puzzle is unreachable and this is what I fear...

This one is for you Jeff. I remembered how much you liked Robs demo 'Hand reaching out through the glass'
Rob had sort of given up on his songs but after a few beers with me before his return to university tomorrow he decided to play some of his latest songs which included a reworked 'Hand reaching out through the glass' aka 'The Trail'.
I hope that Tull fans enjoy these latest songs recorded for fun this evening any comments and feedback very welcome.
First up 'The Trail'
Lyrics-
Well I was born in Winter, But Summer came so fast, And when I opened my eyes, Twenty years had past.
Looking over your shoulder, Staring across the field, 'The grass is always greener- on the other side', That's how I used to feel.
Staring out of my window, Hand reaching out through the glass. Start looking to the future, I knew I should- stop dwelling on what had past.
But I'm meandering. Forever floundering. On the windy trail of my life. Find it frightening. But it's enlightening.
On the windy trail of my life.
I never thought the path that- I would choose to take, Would leave me with a sense that- My efforts were half-baked.
On the windy trail of my life

Second up a newly written song Sailed Away
Lyrics-
Although I never knew you... I was moved close to tears. When I learned of your fate, your misfortune. Yes I was struck with fear.
You didn't listen to her then (And you still don't) Instead you drove her round the bend, And scraped upon each others bones. Do you recall the scent she left upon your cheek. She said that she would stay....
But she sailed away.
It's clear that you miss her, It's evident you crave her voice. There's not a thousand like her, And my boy she's made her choice.
You didn't listen to her then (And you still don't) Instead you drove her round the bend, And scraped upon each others bones. Do you recall the scent she left upon your cheek. She said that she would stay....
But she sailed away.
