Hello all,
Going to put you to the test...NO! I would like to know the Tull remasters that you like for the sound? What are your choice Tull compact discs?
Sound doesn't matter. It's the music that counts is an acceptable answer. ;D
Top of the morning - tea cheers

Most of them came out pretty good, except of course for Under Wraps which is absolutely hideous with the mix of the bass drum. Nothing like fucking up a remaster!

I like the first West German CD of Under Wraps. www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showthread.php?t=132673&highlight=tullI like: This Was - Mono remaster or 2001 stereo remaster Stand Up - MFSL UD Benefit - USA original CD Aqualung - DCC or UK CDP32 1044-2 Living In The Past - MFSL UD II or first USA CD Thick As A Brick - MFSL UD A Passion Play - MFSL UD II WarChild - MFSL UD II Minstrel In The Gallery - Made in Japan for UK Chrysalis Too Old To Rock 'N' Roll - first UK Chrysalis Songs From The Wood - MFSL UD II Heavy Horses - Remaster Stormwatch - Remaster A - Remaster The Broadsword And The Beast - first Made in W. Germany for UK Chrysalis (low volume transfer that sounds good turned up loud) Under Wraps - Made in W. Germany for UK Chrysalis Crest Of A Knave - Remaster Rock Island - Remaster Catfish Rising - Original CD Roots To Branches - Original CD I don't necessarily prefer these remasters over other versions, but I like these remasters: This Was Thick As A Brick A Passion Play WarChild Minstrel In The Gallery Too Old To Rock 'n' Roll: Too Young To Die Heavy Horses (my fave version) Stormwatch (my fave version) A The Broadsword And The Beast Ian Anderson: Walk Into Light Under Wraps (crazy bass for a disco) Crest Of A Knave (original CD/LP other room echo is tamed) Rock Island Catfish Rising WarChild MoFi is to die for.

My first TBT&TB disc (which I believe came from W. Germany) had some issues - hard to describe the sound but it sounded mechanically or technically generated - almost a pulsating type sound that could be heard each time Ian sang "giving us a hard time my friends." Anybody else?

No problem with my West Germany for UK Broadsword CD, TM. www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showpost.php?p=3440579&postcount=264Again, I don't necessarily prefer these original CD's over other versions but despite the remasters & the gold CD's, these Chrysalis CD's will never be set free. Interesting enough discussion...about the Teacher: ;D "Jethro Tull "Teacher" UK Mix" www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showthread.php?t=209748"OK, so I think there are 6 versions/mixes of Teacher available:" Version 1 (UK/European single version) a) 1969 stereo mix found in UK & France 45s b) 1969 mono mix found on other Euro 45s Version 2 (US album version) c) 1970 mono mix found on US reprise promo 45 (possibly a fold down?) d) 1970 stereo mix on US Benefit album e) 1971 stereo remix on LITP double album f) 1993 stereo remix on 25th Anniversary box set. per Warchild www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showpost.php?p=5265336&postcount=62This also works for CD only: Teacher #1 UK version is found on CD only on the 20 years box. Teacher #2 This is the most common form of Teacher Teacher #3 is remixed on Living In The Past Teacher #4 is remixed on the 25th box set Classic Songs Remixed. per pig whisperer www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showpost.php?p=5259887&postcount=43For future cut&paste: ;D CD versions of Teacher: Teacher #1 is found on CD only on the 20 years box. #2 - piano: left of center (between the bass and guitar) vocals: center and right guitar: left bass: center second guitar (that comes in at the vocal): right - found on North American Benefit #3 Living In The Past *MFSL CD (& remaster bonus track):piano: right vocals: center guitar: left bass: center second guitar (that comes in at the vocal): right #4 is remixed on the 25th box set Classic Songs Remixed #2 CD & LP - USA Teacher on Benefit US Teacher: Balance is noticeably different right off the bat with the USA Benefit mix. Keyboard left on original USA CD & LP. #3 Keyboard right on MU, MFSL, Benefit Remaster, & 2CD The Best Of Jethro Tull Anniversary Collection Original Mixes ...and what have we learned from all of this Well, for one thing, Teacher on the Benefit LP & CD is really unique from the Living in the Past LP & CD & other comps.

Hello again, it sounds like #3 is the most common. Keyboard right on "MU" Best Of Jethro Tull, MFSL, Benefit Remaster, & 2CD The Best Of Jethro Tull Anniversary Collection Original Mixes.
I'm liking the original CD of "MU" Best Of Jethro Tull sound for Teacher as it is the least aggressive mastering.

I find Under Wraps sounds better on vinyl. I believe the 200g Aqualung vinyl sounds great too (but expensive).
Maybe I'll rip UW to digital one day.

Thanks to Roland at SHtv = This is a chart showing the different peak values of Aqualung on CD. (Does not include the poorly rated 25th anniversary CD remaster) Ignoring the gold CD - I liked the UK CDP 32 1044-2, as you can see by the chart it is the same as the West Germany-made by-Sanyo-Japan & West Germany-Sonopress-Germany (610 016-222). CD Review - early CD rating for Aqualung. Up to me

I just bought the remaster of Warchild, because I had a fairly low opinion of the album previously. I enjoyed it far more than the original CD release, or my original vinyl pressing from the 70s for that matter. I might even someday forgive Tull for releasing this disjointed compilation between two superior albums. Moreso than other remasters, I think the extra tracks make the CD better: 11."Warchild Waltz" – 4:21 12."Quartet" – 2:44 13."Paradise Steakhouse" – 4:03 14."SeaLion 2" (Anderson/Jeffrey Hammond) – 3:20 15."Rainbow Blues" – 3:40 16."Glory Row" – 3:35 17."Saturation" – 4:21 Although I am confounded that they decided to fade the outro to "Warchild Waltz" just as it was getting good. Bah!

Any opinion on Bursting Out? Just bought the remaster today (yeah, a double cd for 5 € !!), but haven't had time to listen to it yet.

Welcome ak78,
I don't mind the Bursting Out remaster, it's noticeably pumped up over the rather flat earth original USA single disc CD. IMO you can't go wrong with either. Of course the remaster is more complete. From what I've read, Tull's original master tapes are flat for the most part.
Add: Peter Mew & Ian Anderson please go easy with the treble charge when remastering.
You see the wall behind is crumbling, and the stage door is bricked-in. But the audience keep arriving 'till they're standing in the wings. And we take the final curtain call, and the ceiling crashes in.

You can't go wrong with any remaster. Almost every bonus track is very good and they make up for album songs which I'm not crazy about. If you're a fan of 70s prog and heavy rock and folk then if you collect these 15 cd's then tull should become your fave band lol. They are all 4 star plus:
thick as a brick living in the past heavy horses remaster(wish blues instrumental was included) bursting out warchild remaster(amazing addition of bonus tracks) songs from the wood remaster(beltane nice addition) benefit remaster(love the bonus tracks) stormwatch remaster(love the bonus tracks) broadsword remaster(wished it included motoreyes and jackalynn(the other version)) aqualung remaster(hope new remaster includes last 6 songs on LITP) a passion play(wish it included unrelated APP compositions audition, left right, first post, no rehearsal, animalee, look at the animals) a remaster(dvd great) stand up remaster(cool bonus tracks) dotcom remaster(inc. it all trickles down) roots to branches

Bursting Out is, as tooltull talisman said, a bit more complete, but I don't know from which part. The old cd1 clocks 47:01, and the new one is 47:23. On cd2 the difference is smaller, the old one clocks 46:01 and the new 46:08. (Timings according to my iTunes.) I think I must check out what's with the differences...
On the other releases, I really like the new This Was 2CD. I'm a big fan of sixties' mono mixes, and I'm glad this one came out on cd (and I really think the world should hear Fresh Cream and Forever Changes in mono!). Stand up is a different story then, in this case a new stereo mix (which was made for This Was) would really be needed, as there is no mono mix existing from this album. Some albums from the late sixties are quite painful to listen to with headphones, especially when the drums are on the other channel and guitar on the other. That's why I always pick up a mono version, if such is available. Also, I don't see the reason for putting an edited (parts cut off) cd-version of Carnegie Hall being put in the same box with a full audio only-DVD of that very same concert. (Any opinions of which one sounds better? The live cd or the live dvd?) Well, the "stand up" gatefold replica looks great, but I already have that in my lp...
