On Flutist of the Week, we have been exploring some of Horslips stuff that is said to resemble Tull, mainly because of the flute, but Horslips has tons of great flute-free rock, which does not resemble Tull at all. I will be posting some of that stuff in this new thread.
Here is an absolutely killer live version of their song 'Furniture.' Check out the extended guitar solo in the middle section, and the great drumming throughout.

This is Horslips' rendition of a traditional Irish reel, set to scenes of the conflict in Northern Ireland during the 1960's - 1980's. Great instrumental piece, with fiddle, searing electric guitar and a whistle solo toward the end. The clips of the violent confrontation seem to go with the music perfectly.
I know far too little about the origin of the conflict to support one side or the other, but I do love the poster in the beginning which defiantly exclaims "Oppose Censorship." I hope all censors out there are listening. You know who you are.

These two, both from the album The Book of Invasions, are not completely flute-free, but have less of the Tull-ish sounding flute than the stuff I posted in the Jim Lockhart thread. The first one, the Warm Sweet Breath of Love, is heavy pop-rock, whereas the second one, Sideways to the Sun is quieter and more traditional, reminding me of a Ric Sanders violin piece, but the vocals are trademark 'Slips.
Both videos contain really nice images of Ireland.

Hi Just joined the board, and am a major fan of Horslips since way "back in the day" and ever since. Unfortunately you have me at a disadvantage because although I live in beautiful rural Ireland, it means I don't get broadband in any shape or form, so U-tube cliips are worse than useless to me. However I know all the songs you have linked - very well. Horslips have certainly been compared with Tull and not least because of the flute style of Jim Lockhart. You notice it most on the albums "Book of Invasions" and "Aliens". During the time those albums were current they even included an excellent cover version of "Locomotive Breath" in their live set. You might check out the album "Aliens" which is in my opinion the most Tull-like of the lot as well as being one of my favourites. "Come Summer" is a highlight as well as a track called Speed the Plough... which is why I picked it as a username.

Thank you for your comments and feedback on our Horslips, Marianne, and for your interest in this board. I think you will enjoy being here, making new friends, discussing music and other things, etc. We have several other members from Ireland, Mix and Coolraven, and a few others I think, including tootull who used to live there. And hopefully we will have more joining us soon from the Horslips FB page! One thing I did not know is that Horslips did a live version of Locomotive Breath! I'm going to have to try to find that for the board. So let's keep discussing 'Slips and other things, and I'll assign you to keep us abreast of all breaking Horslips news, including, hopefully, further reunions and tours! Jeff P.S. Let me or Paul know what you would like for your avatar and we will set it up for you pronto!

Interesting comments on how Horslips broke barriers and were the ones that actually forged the Irish rock scene. I wasn't sure if they came before Thin Lizzy or vice versa, but you have answered that one for me now!
By the way, my friend Mike lent me the Rollback album not too long ago, (it was two CDs, I think, and it came in a cardboard CD case, am I right?), and I loved it. But that was live acoustic material, not a new studio album, correct? They have not released any new material since Short Stories, Tall Tales if I'm not mistaken, but please correct me if I'm wrong.

That's correct. Rollback is an acoustic album, with acoustic remakes of some of their older stuff but a few new tracks on it too. I thought it was a studio album though.

Yes, you are right, I don't think it is live acoustic, rather acoustic studio remakes of their older material. I am not sure about new material, but below is the album with the 15 tracks. I am not familiar with six of them, Nos. 4,5,8,9, 10 and 15. Are any of those new? 1. Trouble (With A Capital T) 2. The Man Who Built America 3. Guests Of The Nation 4. Faster Than The Hound 5. Huish The Cat 6. Mad Pat 7. The Wrath Of The Rain 8. Flirting In The Shadows 9. CĂșchulainn's Lament 10. Ace And Deuce 11. Blindman 12. Furniture 13. The Power And The Glory 14. Long Weekend 15. My Love Is in America I just noticed that the CD cover indicates that all of these are re-recorded classics, but there is also an indication of a 4 track bonus CD. However, Amazon does not include the tracks on the second disc. Do you know what's on that one, and if any of it is new? I think I'm going to have to borrow this again! Jeff

Right, I have my copy of Rollback here...
The bonus disc has an audio and a video section both of which contain the same 4 tracks - listed as
Flower Amang them All Furniture The Musical Priest/The High Reel Trouble with a Capital T
1st 3 of those are from their first album, "Happy to Meet, Sorry to Part" and the 4th is from "Book of Invasions".
(all recorded live at the Horslips History exhbition opening in Derry in March 04... which I didn't get a ticket for! Still furious about that! My son was doing work experience at a local radio station and it was sent 2 tickets - but the manager just gave them out to someone who couldn't care less... arggh!) I was first through the door at the exhibition itself, though.)
As for the rest of the tracks... 5 is new, listed as "a single jig played by Charles on guitar, 9 is described as "a piper's practice tune played by Johnny on tenor guitar" and 15 is described as "a reel played by Charles on tenor guitar".
So not new compositions... just "trad arr Horslips".
The rest are all from their other albums.

Doesn't seem to have been mentioned yet, but there was/is a 2 DVD box set called 'HORSLIPS - Return of the Dancehall Sweethearts', containing a 2-hour documentary and well over an hour of archive footage www.horslips.ie/rotds.htmlJon
