Went and saw Steven Wilson the other night. Freaking awesome. Very refreshing. And I agree "The Raven......." Is a great album. he opened with "Luminol" great tune. Afterward we went backstage and hung out with Chad Wackerman and family for a while. He told us some funny stories about how he came to learn all the tunes in a week....cold. Without one scrp of it written down. Wilson even joked onstage that this was Chads first show without any notation (of his own) to refer to. Wilson was already out somewhere else so I missed my opportunity to get his video message for the board....... There was a few other folks back there, two that had an interesting look. Turned out one of the couples was a guy Rob Trujillo and his wife. I didn't know it until the next day, Wilson posted a pick of himself with the 2 of them on his FB page.(I had to google him) He's the bass player for Metallica!!! LOL I wonder if Ian knows!!!! Great evening, and Chad had his whole family there and we were just included. I asked him to take a picture with me and he kind of laughed (we've been around each other in parental situations, so now all of a sudden I need a picture?) I told him I was going to post this pic on all the "Prog Blogs"!! He replied "Oh there's more than one?" Lol

Intriguing, I wonder of the "Sailor" recording will be from the studio or live? Let's have some more unreleased Tull! Not as much money as rerelease I suppose--makes sense.

This is great news, I'm really looking forward to hearing the remix of A Passion Play! If Steven Wilson does only as much as turn up the guitar track on it, I'm buying the set. I've always wondered why was Martin Barre's guitar buried so deep in the original mix.

I've always wondered why was Martin Barre's guitar buried so deep in the original mix. Maybe because Ian wanted to feature his skills on the soprano saxophone. The keyboards too are pretty dominant on APP. Not only does it seem Martin's guitar got pushed to the background, but they took a lot of the sting out of it too. I do recall Martin's guitar was plenty loud when they played the album live though.

Exactly, I love listening to live bootlegs from the Passion Play shows, the band sounds as if they are about to melt the hall down! Martin's guitar work on the "Best Friends" and "Critique Oblique" sections is electrifying. Ian's sax also generally sounded crazier live; like bagpipes on steroids.

I agree! the first section, after the opening, of APP live is somewhat "soft" until "all along the icy wastes they're faces smiling in the gloom" and then WAMMO the band just knocks you back with Martins guitar volume at 11. I think Ian started pushing the elec.guitar back in the mixes beginning with TAAB. Maybe he want to feature the "orchestrated" arrangement of the band. It was after all much more complex than a "rock" album and maybe Ian wanted to show off all the complex and subtle instrumentation on the studio recordings. It was always rearranged for the stage though. They didnt have the benefit of the overdubed instruments and they had to play it as a "rock" band would. I liked it that way. Darin

Does anyone know when the remixed A Passion Play is supposed to be released? Do I remember someone mentioning Easter time? I hope I.A. spreads it out a little before the new solo band cd comes out.

He mentioned September of 2014 I believe, after talking about the Erraticus release in April……..Its a ways off. Darin

The version I remember hearing sounded like it was live with audience sounds and whatnot--but that might just be a trick of memory. Come to think of it I might be mistaking it with a low-quality live recording of Dun Ringill.

Just a little refresher on Steven Wilson. Luminol, from The Raven That Refused to Sing. This gooood stuff.
Just my theory, but I think Ians exposure to this whirlwind of a player composer producer has done a little bit to inspire him in the last couple of years. Not speaking musically so much but Im sure witnessing the amount of work Wilson is involved in has to be a little inspiring. don't you think?

With Ian's own work ethic and his desire to "Burn out" rather than fade away, so to speak, I would think His relationship with Wilson may turn out to be a very big influence, musically as well. I think I can see that with this new cover even, if it is the one he uses. IA was in some ways trapped with "Tull" I think, and needed to "get out more" musically speaking. Perhaps he's just now getting his solo cogs turning, or at least well oiled. IA has been influenced by his surroundings and current music scenes before - a book of folk tales pryor to SFTW, Thomas Dolby in the early 80s, Dire Straits, etc., and I would be thankful that its someone like Wilson at least, if someone has to infuence him now at this stage. Let's face it, when you reach IA's age, there's nothing like a good shot of inspiration. I'm looking foward to this new album perhaps more than any in the last decade, and looking ahead, perhaps the one after even more.
