Celtic rock band Tempest originally hail from Norway, but now call the U.S. home. They are known to Tull fans for their major contributions to the Tull tribute album "To Cry You a Song" on which they do a cover of Locomotive Breath and lead singer Lief Sorbye does a rendition of Mother Goose.
They are known to us here for the additional reason of being a favorite of our good friend Blue (and if I'm not mistaken, Tullist Ray is rather fond of them as well.) So to go along with Blue's new avatar, here are Tempest with crunching and energetic live versions of Byker's Hill and Wizard Walk. I can definitely see why Blue, Ray (Blueray?) and other Tull fans are nuts about these guys, because these are two are blistering, and you can tell they are a lot of fun!

Jeff Have lost a little touch with Tempest in the last 15 years or so though I have seen them maybe twice in that time period. Very much recommend their earliest output, the old folk chestnut quoted Byker Hill is from this period. The last cd I heard from them, Gravel Walk I was not terribly impressed with, ditto their 10 th anniversary disc from at least 10 years ago, to my knowledge all the material was better in the initial interpretation. (Maybe also true of the Christmas album, more a case of it was brilliant, this stuff is nearly brilliant or brilliant) Now the one of this ilk that I would recommend, especially with the return of their Ian factor, Todd Menton after probably 15 years, is Minneapolis" Boiled in Lead, may have done several good cd's, STRONGLY recommend their disc from the late 80's called From the Ladle to the Grave. Get you some Pig Dog Daddy. I think they cover Byker Hill on there too. BTW to my knowledge the only Norway factor of Tempest is their singer and multi instrumentalist Lief Sorbye who is from there, to my knowledge they have always been based out of Oakland. Both Lief and Todd Menton are strongly influenced by IA, Menton once told me that was his main influence on acoustic guitar.

As much as I love their studio albums, to truly appreciate Tempest, you have to see them live. Their energy is just out of this world. Possibly the weakest of the studio work is Balance. That having been said, it's still a very good piece of work. The Double Cross is possibly my favorite but Another Dawn is moving up. That's the newest, just out this past March. Quick rundown: Lief is originally from Oslo, Norway, Adolfo (drummer) Havana, Cuba, Michael (fiddler player) Fresno/Reedley(?), CA, (Reedley? Redding? I give up!) Damien (bass) (and fire breathing) James (lead guitar) Devon, England and the band was formed in Oakland, CA. If you look on my MySpace account there's a video of Damien doing his fire breathing thing. Great fun!
