Jethro Tull to play South Shields gig
ROCK legends Jethro Tull are set to rock the coast later this year. The group will perform in a 3,000-capacity marquee at Gypsies Green on South Shields seafront on Friday, September 17, as a prelude to this year's Great North Run. Organised by South Tyneside Council and the Customs House in South Shields, it promises to be one of the biggest concerts the town has seen. The band, led by Ian Anderson, famous for playing the flute while standing on one leg, have sold more than 60 million albums since forming in the 1960s. Customs House executive director Ray Spencer said: "I'm delighted we have secured Jethro Tull for this very special gig. "I hope this is the start of a long and fruitful relationship with the council to bring world-class musicians to the area for gigs." Supporting them will be the borough's Bessie and The Zinc Buckets, whose lead singer and bassist, Kev Charlton, said: "Our fans will be pleased to know we will be doing our usual rockabilly show. "It's a great honour to be supporting such an iconic band, who we have all been fans of since the early 1970s." Tickets cost £27.50.
