As promised Jeff, a review of Tull at South Shields on Friday 17th. I really must say, I didn't no what to expect in a giant marque on the coast of the North sea. What we got was Tull at there best. We were right at the front of the stage so it was hard to calculate whether or not it was a full house, but on leaving it would not be far short. Opening the show was a local band, Bessie and the zink buckets, a rockabilly outfit. Not really my type of music but having said that, they were very good at what they do, and they were Tull fans too which is a plus in my book. Enter Tull !!! instrument wise it was basic, but I think Doane has required a new drum kit. Straight into Nothing is easy, followed by Beggars farm, then a new day yesterday, songs from the wood and then Thick as a brick. That was when it became a fantastic night. Tull and the crowd came together. Next up was Bouree, then the two new songs, hare in the wine cup and a change of horses (which I like very much) But my favourite of the whole night was Farm on the free way. Next came the classic, Dharma for one, on which Doane played an excellent drum solo. Then came Cross eyed Mary, then a very powerful my god. Then the crowd went wild with Aqualung. Ian had most of the crowd singing along on that one and of course Locomotive Breath to finish on. Oh, and of course the balloons ( still didn't manage to catch one Amanda, hope you did) To sum up Jeff, a fantastic night watching a fantastic band and a fantastic crowd. Yes Ian's singing is struggling now but hey, the man is in his 60s, I couldn't belt them songs out in my 20s. I think Ian and the boys really enjoyed that gig in South Shields, there was a lot of joking going on throughout. 40+ years on and still the best live band the UK has ever produced. I will be posting my photos and set list as soon as possible ( may need your help on down sizing Jeff) Also a lot of thanks must go to Ray Spencer of the customs house and south Tyneside council, without who, a few thousand people would have been watching t.v. On Friday night. Gary

Gary, Have you posted you photos on the internet yet ? Most of mine are blurred, as I was half way back and had to take them without the flash Recorded a bit of Aqualung on my digital camera, looks OK, but only 30 secs! Last time I saw Tull was on the Rock Island tour! Really enjoyed the South Shields gig. Would have liked to hear Too old to rock and Roll (my fav song!), but an enjoyable night! Didn't seem like a 2 hour set! Apparently there were 3000 tickets available and 2000 sold. More than I thought. Bessie and the zinc buckets were a great local opening act. An enjoyable night was had by all. Andrew.

From your description, it seems like Ian was in good spirits with a lot of banter, and that always makes for a better concert. Look forward to your set list and pics when you are able, but Paul's really the man to help you with downsizing of photos. BTW, I'm with you regarding 'rockabilly' music. I don't like it either. That band from the 80's the Stray Cats....couldn't stand them. Really annoying music, imo. Jeff

I have to say WELL DONE to South Shields and the Customs House, they've manage to get some cool bands over the years (Quireboys and Oliver Dawson Saxon both free concerts at the ampitheatre). The marquee was warm on the chilly night, the location was brilliant, beer was a little expensive (but didn't expect anything else!). Shame there wasn't a Tull programme to add to my collection of getting a programme from nearly every concert I've been to. Is your song list complete, as you mentioned there might be one missing ! I wish the internet had been around in the 80's, as used to write down the set lists for bands I saw at Newcastle City Hall! Still have the notepad somewhere lol, along with every concert ticket i've purchased!

OP: "Ian's singing is struggling but, hey, the man is in his 60's..." People keep bringing up his age as a reason to excuse his "singing"
Up to the current moment, the following rockers are still performing at full throttle, and singing as well as they were 40 (read: Four-Ty) years ago:
Neil Young, 65 years old (at death's door 2 yrs ago w/ a brain aneurism)
Jack Bruce, 67 years old (liver cancer, liver transplant)-was actually declared dead as body rejected the new liver initially
David Crosby, 69 years old (morbidly obese, liver trans, etc.)
And ALL these artists, in addition to major health issues were big-time drug adddicts...esp Bruce- heroin addict and Crosby- if u dont know his drug history, u been living in a cave
My Point? I Anderson, who declares himself in better shape now than even 15 years ago, stays in his hotel room with a good book, watches CNN, gets a good nite's sleep, famously NEVER EVER EVER did DRUGS and is YOUNGER than the aforementioned can't sing for shit while the others give peeps their money's worth (vocally) nite after nite
There are many others who are OLDER than him and led the typical drug-fueled lifestyle that Ian always denigrated who can still sing with beauty, strength and poise.
So, please stop bringing up his age and that this is acceptable & normal for someone" his age." Bullocks!
Hmmm.....Gary Booker, anyone...also older and in great voice and many others........
Oh, and another thing.........all these guys still put out new, relevant albums year after year......continuing to grow musically and give their fans excitement in looking forward to the next new music (but I guess at Ian's age....and blah blah blah...and, of couse, "It's not ECONOMICALLY SMART for him"- HIS words... to give his devoted fans new material
Since 1999: Neil Young- 7 totally BRAND NEW albums
Jack Bruce 4 totally BRAND NEW albums, and this is not counting the Cream reunion stuff, and including his health & drug issues AND Bruce's albums are not commercial sellers in any sense, but he feels his fans deserve new music
and on and on....

And another thing......he just played on the coast of the NORTH SEA and didn't do "NORTH SEA OIL"?!
I wonder if he "dusted off those RARE gems" that they rarely play like "Aqualung", "Locomotive Breath", "Bouree" etc

Shouldn't it be Tull in a Marquee ? It was a VERY BIG TENT Can't believe they played for 2 hours ? Didn't seem that long ? Did they start at 8pm ? Cause they were off stage by 10pm (I think)

So, Beastie, I'm a "dickhead" for having an opinion? Thanks. You have a great vocabulary.
By the way, it's "you're" not "your" in the right place. Illiterate. (But I wont call you names)
