The first time I saw Tull was at Madison Square Garden during the TAAB tour (circa 1972). Gentle Giant was the opening band.
But if you want to be picky, I saw Glenn Cornick before I saw my first Tull show. He was in Wild Turkey when they opened up for ELP when I saw them.
Those were some shows!

I was at that Tull concert in 1972 at Madison Square Garden and remember it was a great concert, but that was not my most memorable concert. (I might have told this story before), but the one that sticks out in my mind like it was yesterday was July 31, 1976 live at Tampa Stadium. That was the most exciting concert I ever was at. We drove straight from work on a Friday night for 5 hours from Miami Beach to Tampa. We had the worst seats in the entire stadium way way at one end on the top and the band was at the other, (they looked like little bugs on the stage) but to my surprise Tull was introducing Tullavision. Throughout the entire stadium there were big (and I mean big) screen TV's so as you could see every bead of sweat on Ian's brow...Wow. I was in such awe, it was like I could touch him. Every time Ian sang, nobody utterred a word, just lit a lighter and it was complete silence. I can still remember the outfit Ian was wearing. He had on a yellow scarf and a blue jacket with orange lapels and blue slacks. The concert was literally the best. I enjoyed it better than any other concert to follow. When it was finally over and we were making our way to the parking lot, we got a glimpse of a limo leaving and saw Ian sitting next to the window. I was in my glory. It took us almost 1 1/2 hours to get out of the stadium and we didn't have anythiing to eat since lunchtime and it was late already so we decided to go to Steak and Ale for dinner. We get to the restaurant and it was completely empty because it was so late and we were so pumped up from the concert and couldn't stop talking about it, but heard alot of noise in another room and didn't think much of it. We sat at our table, had a wonderful dinner, redid the concert in our heads out loud, but yet still heard all this noise in a back room. I actually got up to talk to the Matre'D and see what all the noise was about when he said to me..did you go to the concert to see Jethro Tull tonight?" I immediately got all excited over again and then we started talking about how terrific it was when he proceeded to tell that Ian and all the band members and their entire enterage were in the next room making all that noise. I almost broke the door down but was stopped by my then husband and literally carried back to our table. That's all I could think about on the ride home was how I didn't get a chance to meet Ian and the band I so much adored and loved. But I did eventually get to meet Ian several concerts later and even got a kiss on the cheek. I didn't wash my face for a week Silken...

Silkenmist, What a night with such some special moments you lived and that you're telling us here after all these years, thundering while reading I thought as if i was enjoying and living the unforgettable concert and experiences you lived. Great! I'm younger than you, and sadly didn't have the chance to wacth them live in those fantastic years, I'm sooooooo jealous of whose did. My first concert was in Barcelona, Spain, at the bullring named La Monumental in 1980, it was tremendous, also i liked the opening band, Camel, a good progressive rock band. i enjoyed the whole night, Jethro was doing the A album gig.... Other times! but good too, isn't it? I remind i was going to Barcelona by car with two others guys that i didn't know at all, I just met them buying the tickets in a travel agency, things happen goodly like that, a great adventure, hehe. My second concert was in 1996 in the Auditorium of Murcia, Spain, another special night. that's all, i look forward they'll come back soon Spain. I'll be there rockin' again. Good thread, minstrel29 best regards everybody ps. changed my avatar, Ian in the cover of the Rolling Stone magazine, i always liked it

Thanks for sharing those great stories, Pearl and Janu, I really enjoyed reading them. Pearl it's great that you eventually did get to meet Ian, and even receive a smooch from him.
Janu, I love your new avatar, that's a great issue of Rolling Stone, which I have in my collection.
Keep on Tulling, right here at The Jethro Tull Board!

Of course seeing Ian and the boy lives back then was much better than not, but there are so many videos of the 70's, 80, 90's and even in 2000 posted on You Tube where you can get a good feel of what the concert was actually live, had you been there. I love the "A" album. That 1980 Spain concert must have been really nice. Regards, Silken...

(Shona was sitting right next to him when he was signing autographs and I got that kiss. She didn't even blink an eye). Regards, Silken...

I have a somewhat different memory/perspective. I remember being disappointed, due to the "side show" going on during the performance. I just wanted to hear music, not see rabbits walking on stage and all that other nonsense. Would I love to attend that show again? In a heartbeat. One of the GREAT Tull stage entries EVER. Does anybody remember?

My first Tull show indelibly stamped in my brain, was 03 Dec 1977, at the Broome County Arena in Binghamton, NY. Last legs of the Songs From the Wood/Repeat: Best of Tour. These were the days of general admission, so I got there at 9:00 am and pretty much sttod on line all day and was rewarded with my choice of seat, which wound up being 3rd row slightly left of center (facing stage). No opening act. They began with Wondering Aloud and some asshole threw a lit cigarette on stage. Ian unplugged his guitar and leaned over and read the guy the riot-act, complete with threat to leave if it happened again. That was the end of the idiocy and the rest of the night was heaven.
The evening had one small sore point. The night before I was bar hopping and wound up at the bar of the hotel where bands usually stay. I got into a conversation with this guy who said he was involved with Arena Security. I told him thatI wrote for my dorm paper (I might have said campus paper) hoping that he'd let me get backstage. He was okay with that; told me where to meet him to gain access, etc. I brought a camera along to the show. Well that got confiscated, but I figured I'd get it back before going backstage. Here's where it got weird. Walking back to my seat I see my security guy hawking t-shirts. I come up to him to say hello. He's all chummy saying this is a great night, and oh man, they asked me to fill in for some seller who got sick, blah, blah, blah. He says meet him stage right after the show. Great. The show ends, I get my camera, and work my way back into the Arena. I get to stage right - no Mr. Security guy, at least, not my guy. The ones there are all business - no pass - no entrance. I'm actually shocked but me (and the friend who was tagging along) head out. Sure enough, outside is my "security" guy. We go upto him as say "what gives". The motherfucker looks at us and says "what are you talking about - I don't know who you are..." I just turned around but my friend wants to start something. I tell him to drop it. I'd see that asshole from time to time at other concerts - still selling shirts.

Regarding you security guard story - All sorts of weird crap happened back in the day, I consider myself lucky to have survived it.

The first concert of Jethro Tull I saw was in Oakland CA in 1974. I had only heard a bit of Tull prior to the show but was more than impressed. Up to that point I was a boy (16) who liked theatrical type of rock music. Alice Cooper, Queen, David Bowie etc. Had not been to many concerts having been so young. If I remember correctly they started the show with the title track of "War Child" and went right into a 20 minute section of "A Passion Play" followed by a 30 minute section of "Thick as a Brick"!! There was magnesium explosions and laser lights and other bits of "theatre" mixed into the performance. I was absolutley blown away at how tight the performance was. They played about 90 minutes, took an intermission and came back and did another hour of remaining "War Child" "Aqualung" tunes ending with Locomotive Breath. On the way home we got pulled over on the Bay Bridge and the cops found marijuana in my pocket. Thankfully they let us go after throwing what was left of my smoke into a mud puddle. Over the years I've seen Tull about 15 times. Once while staying at Disney World in Orlando, did'nt even know they were playing until I saw the marque at the "House of Blues" in Disney's park!!What a pleasent surprise that was. As luck would have it we were able to buy tickets from a "scalper" for just a few $$ more than box office prices. Show was SOLD OUT. Jethro Tull has always been my favorite.."I'm a one band man"..peace...JSM

I've read your first two posts with interest, couldn't agree more with your remarks about the RnR Hall Fame, and I enjoyed reading your First Tull Show story. 1974-1976 may have been the absolute pinnacle of Tull, certainly Ian's vocal abilities were at their height, the shows from that era were tremendous, they played very extensive sets, the entire band was incredible and Martin Barre was a guitar god. The humor and antics were also most prevalent at that time, as I am sure you recall. I just listened to a whole bunch of shows from that era, sent to me by a good friend, and they blew me away, so I know what you experienced at your first show. I never had many recordings from that era, maybe only one or two, before he sent them to me, and I was stunned when I heard them, as my first show was not until 1977 on the SFTW -- still great at that time of course, and still great now....but never quite like then. Anyway, sit back.....relax......and make yourself com-fort-able with Jethro Tull Board......Jethro Tull Board!!! Jeff
