I'm still waiting to hear this fecking song. Why isn't JethroTull.com showcasing this new material? Even some low grade demo version would do. It is crazy the way this site and various other fan sites offer more news and information than the official site.

I certainly am.

In the old days the flute was an ingredient and my god was it a joyful one. These days we get these long Flute intros and outros on new songs. Take Lost in crowds for example. There there was a great song. I don't mind the intro but there was no need for the outro on that one as well.
The other thing about Ian's flute playing is while I appreciate his mastery of the instrument, before Divinities (when he claimed he played it wrong) it sounded much more raw, less refined, less sickly squeaky clean. I much preferred that. Anyway, I seem to be moaning again, shut-the-F***-up-Mix. Deep down I'm very pleased Ian is performing new material. Honest!!!

Ok, one more concern then.......... So we have new material. Début on an Ian Anderson solo tour. We're all hoping the next album is going to be a Tull album. Assuming these two new pieces make it on to said Tull album I'm not sure I'd be too happy to have Martin Barre playing Florian guitar parts

I hope the recent pattern holds and we get two new albums, one solo, one Tull, released within a short time of each other. That way, Ian will have enough new material to tour with for the next 5-7 years. Jeff

Or is everybody singing A Change of Horses to themselves lately? I'm diggin this song. It is really quite good, and it does stay with you. It's been happening to me too. The song just keeps running through your head. Would like to see the lyrics though. I think it may be political, having something to do with Obama being elected and his promise of "change." Jeff

Splitting the more acoustic stuff away from Tull and putting it out as a solo album is a mistake imo. I like the blend of rock/acoustic, that is what Tull is/was/should be.

Oh, I agree 100%, one great Tull album would be preferable. I guess what I meant was if there's got to be a solo album I hope that there's a Tull album as well. Jeff

Let's hope Ian doesn't fill it with covers.

The vocals are a bit on the harsh side but after repeated listening you can get a pretty good fell how it would sound in the studio. And I feel the exact same was about his flute playing. I prefer the more aggressive, bluesy style as opposed to the James Galway (although JG is a phenomenal player). But as I've stated, this song has the Celtic intro which I absolutely love and then progresses further with this staccato flute in unison to the strumming guitar which I also dig. And then later on you have some pretty intricate passages thrown in as well. It's been a long time since a new Tull/IA song stayed with me. And I'm enjoying the hell out of it.

I know exactly what you mean about the change in his flute playing. His old style was more staccato, more forceful....like a rock instrument punctuating the songs....and it had more of an impact, whereas now it's more flowing and constant, and he plays it in more like a classical instrument. There are some exceptions, like the flute attack at the beginning of Birthday Card at Christmas, kind of like an icy blast to (appropriately) start that song, and the end of A Hand of Thumbs, which featured the "old-style" fluttering Tull flute. Paul, your signature photo, any info on that? Looks like they had a great meal! This was a poster probably about 11"x17" that was packaged inside the M.U. The Best of Jethro Tull album. If you can ever get your hands on a sealed copy from an earlier pressing it should be inside! Here's a larger image: MU Poster
