I can honestly say Ian Anderson has saved my life. I am still in the hospital as I type this, but I just sent the following email to Ian and hope he reads it:
Ian, I have been a hardcore fan since the '80's and seen dozens of shows. I am 42, and currently hospitalized for a near death experience with DVT/Pulmonary embolisms. I recently flew roundtrip to Germany from the U.S. for work, and upon returning had a chest cold. I went to the doctor, who said it was early bronchitis and sent me home. As they days passed I continued to get weaker and lose breath. I thought it was pneumonia and planned to go to the doctor the next day. Instead, I collapsed unconscious at home. When the ambulance brought me to the hospital and I was revived I remembered your episode of DVT and informed the cardiologist of my recent flights. He immediately gave me a cat scan and found multiple, large embolisms in my lungs and heart. Long story short, I am still hospitalized but improving and the diagnosis is a 100% recovery. I am told I SHOULD have, not could have, died when I arrived. Your sharing of your DVT story saved my life, kept my young wife from being widowed, and my 5 year old daughter Lucia (named after Lucia Micarelli) and 3 year old son Vincent from losing a father at a young age. So if you read this email, Thank-you again from a fellow DVT survivor. Funny how an interest in music and distant events such as your DVT that are seemingly remote can have such an impact on a stranger and a family you have never met.

Hope you have a full recovery. Good luck with your recovery. Yes Ian had a close call with that.

This video was made in Australia in 1996 right before Ian got hospitalized for DVT. There is a video also on "Living With The Past" dvd with Ian doing a public service announcement for DVT. That was a great story you shared. Best wishes for you and your recovery. (The Power of Tull)

What a great and serious story, kobathecat. I'm happy you all achieved to know what the issue was and so much surprisingly thanks to the Ian's illness experience. Have a soon and total recovery from that disease. Serge

Funny how an interest in music and distant events such as your DVT that are seemingly remote can have such an impact on a stranger and a family you have never met. What a great story (not great to read about you nearly dying, but great that you recovered, and that your being a Tull fan had something to do with that), and we are all thankful you are okay, "kobathecat"! That's a great email you sent to Ian, and it would not surprise me at all if he responded to something like that since he himself has experienced the same thing, and he is (or was) a spokesman for DVT prevention. Welcome here, by the way! I'm not sure that we got your first name yet, don't think so though, and we do try to be on a first name basis around here. It's perfectly fine if you prefer not, though....we can just call you Koba or KTC instead. There's a welcoming message with some basic info in your private message box, don't think you've seen it yet, so take a look, and let me know if you have a specific preference for an avatar. In the meantime, I'll pick one for you soon, which you can keep or change to something else, just let me know. Your story reminded me of how my love of Tull may well have saved my wife's life on 9/11, but in a different way then yours. The story of what happened (involving my listening to Dot Com at full blast from 8:30 a.m. until 9:04 or 9:05 a.m. that morning, in our apartment about mile and a half away from the WTC) is here: thejethrotullboard.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=remember&thread=771&page=3#8310Maybe I ought to send Ian that story in an email, I think he might like that. (He usually likes when fans tell him things that are interesting to him, not just the trite bullshit like "oh, I'm your biggest fan" type of stuff.) God bless you man, you're alright and we are glad to have you here! Jeff

Kobathecat,
Glad to read that you are recuperating from your near death experience with DVT and hope that your convalescence is going well. Hopefully leaving the hospital and going' BACK TO THE FAMILY 'at home will assist in a faster and more comfortable recovery for you and your family.

I would just like to add my thanks to you for sharing this story. I was a lifelong Libertarian/atheist of a slightly-militant and mouthy stripe before a complete transformation in February of 2011. I do believe in miracles and I also strongly believe that Ian Anderson is blest if ever a person were blest. Here is a man who doesn't read music but can compose such complex pieces; a man smart enough to sense that choosing a radically un-rock- like instrument would draw notice, both pro and con, to his work and presence at that extremely fertile and generative period in time; also a man who has always been cheerful and humble in the face of critics who are paid to take petty shots at public figures for no other reason than to stroke their own egos and give a good time to the masses who are in no position to adequately judge the work of a fine musician and entertainter. Ian Anderson is sincere and kind and has lived his life producing things of value, both artistically and commercially, and deserves to be reverered and loved. He is blest, and you have been blest also, at least so I believe. If I am wrong, so be it; but I doubt that I am. I wish only the best for you and your family. Regards, Bill.

WOW What a story!
Peeps, listen to that story. Snap out of fantasy land for a few seconds and take a look around. It does not matter what you think your house is worth or what you owe on it. The market is the market and no amount of clicking your ruby red slippers together is going to change it.
Think about it.

I remember Ian's DVT well as sadly it stopped me seeing them again, only for the second time, in Melbourne.

DVT is a very nasty insidious condition.

True that, my dad almost died from it a couple of years ago.
