Okay. Here's the deal.... I'm a relatively new Jethro Tull fanatic. I live in Vancouver, B.C. (Canada). To my knowledge there has never been a Tull Convention here. I feel compelled to get one started. I have no idea how to do something like this.... So, ideas would be great and very much appreciated!!!!!

Maybe someone can put you in touch with others that have run some past conventions.
Good luck!

Maybe someone can put you in touch with others that have run some past conventions. Good luck! I've always been in two minds about conventions, the only one that I really enjoyed was one for the Who that my brother organised. Daltrey and the band [sans PT] played[Pete's part was played by his brother, guitarist, Simon Townshend] where the band played Quadrophenia to a small crowd of about 1500 in a bar in Shepherd's Bush, great night afterwards. [When people tell you of tales of drinking sessions with Peggy, then I have to say you haven't really experienced a drinking session unless it involved John Entwistle, believe me]. I think in the UK, unless someone is willing to stump up some serious readies for a decent days entertainment and have some decent ideas beyond the quiz and a raffle, then they tend to be a bit lacklustre and old hat, and only really serve a purpose of letting the organisers to indulge in their "being celebs for a day" syndrome. Maybe I'm too cynical in my old age, but aren't they possibly [or should be] a thing of the past.....well at least in the UK they should. Now the Italians and the US conventions seem a bit more upmarket. I think it's like comparing British Comic Convention with the San Diego Comic Con....a totally different league.

You might be right. I, however, have never been to a convention of any kind, and thought since Jethro Tull is the only "obsession" of mine, at the time, that I should go ahead and make it happen. My goal is to only meet people with the same interests and to learn and see a whole bunch of Jethro Tull shiza. I don't see an isuue with living with the past, as long as one's intentions are for the greater awareness of the Tull Brilliance!
I'm lovin' the feedback.

I'm not knocking your enthusiasm, go for it, and I'm sure if there's anything we can do to asisist we will consider it. I'm only speaking for the conventions I've been to here in the UK, and as well intentioned as they probably were concieved, it was a little bit 'clique-y', and as with anything the UK does of this type [other than real pomp and circumstance' type events], they had the potential to be bit lacklustre and jaded, held in places that were cheap and out of the way. I'm sure a good time was had by all, but I suspect mainly the 'all' who had a hand in it. I can't knock conventions completely, reports I've had of the I-tullians and many of the uS events have been good. But in the UK, a church hall and a banner does not make a convention and I'd be wary of anyone thinking they could put one on these days over here. Now, if you pull it off over there, I might even spring out for the air-fare!

It would ideal for all of us "Tull Boarders" to set up a convention and meet! If only money was free...
Ian Anderson should invest his TAAB2 earnings in this event.

Conventions used to be fun during the 90's because they were affordable. I spent less money on gas than is possible these days. The music was excellent with many Tull Tribute Bands until '97 in Vermont. Because Tull was there for a daytime acoustic performance, we had a blast! At night Tull played a sold out Flynn Theater in Burlington that was perfect and memorable. The overall cost was less than $200.00 for food and tickets. Throw in some t-shirts and beer, we did fine. Not bad for a 2 day party. I don't think it would happen again unless Ian or Martin got behind it. Could you imagine if Martin said yes? The Jethro Tull Board is the next best thing. I've learned more here and I don't have to leave. ;D ;D Also, the guy that made it happen (Benjamin Vaccaro) put himself out on a big limb. The pressure finally got to him. Thanks for your effort Benjamin.

Yes! If Martin or Ian could somehow read this board and be like "Let's just make this happen, and create happier people," I would, definitely buy them dinner... or cook it myself. Yes, have them over... get them both drunk... Make them play music for me!I'm sure they'd enjoy that as much as I would. But for real, I must contact SOMEONE who has some sort of connection with Jethro Tull... or else, just post an invite on the Board, and have the convention in my basement.

It's a great idea because somebody has to have the desire and initiative to get it started. There would be negatives though that I'll follow with, not to discourage you, but rather to give you time to plan and prepare. You will need: -Money, ie your own. Enough for a big wedding. Hopefully you can recoup your costs by your ticket sales but there will be no guarantee -Banquet room reservation preferably at a popular and convenient hotel that can reserve a block of rooms at a special rate as well as alcohol service -Insurance (you will be responsible for any injuries, such as caused by a drunk) -Pay for transportation and accommodations by your entertainers or speakers. (they may play or perform for free but will expect expenses to be covered). -Catering upfront fees -advertising, signage, etc. -Plan to recoup cost from dealers/exhibitors that want to sell that bootleg cd from the Stormwatch tour I'm sure I left a few things out. I have been to but never planned a Tull convention, but know people who put on fan-run Star Trek conventions back in the day. Good luck.
