I guess my dad noticed my great infatuation with Jethro Tull... and decided it was time I showed my inner Anderson. I have never played until now and have been playing for 3 hours.. I'm picking it up rather quick, and loving it! The oxygen high was awesome too, hahaha! My first attempts at playing an actual song consisted of "Tiger Toon" and "Bouree". I felt honored. If anyone has any tips, comments, or stories... please share!

When your all done...........play some more. play along with the song until you cant hear the difference! (and learn how to read) and play some more........... Good Luck and have fun. DC

Yes! I've been that tune non stop. I find I get very light headed when I play the flute... I assume that was Ian's alternative to drugs.

Sounds like perhaps you are putting too much air into the horn. I was very young when I first picked up the flute, so I don't remember too much from that time. My guess is that you are feeling lightheaded, because your facial muscles have not properly developed. I suggest finding yourself a cool teacher ... not one with an ego who tries to teach you classical and nothing else, or spends the entire time practicing and showing off ... rather one who shows you the proper techniques so you can get the fingerings, emboushure, muscle memory in your fingers, and learn to read music. Embourshure will probably be the toughest part. This takes time to build strong muscles in your face. Good luck ... I hope it to be a long, enjoyable journey for you. PM me if you have any more questions ... I've been a flute player for about 10 years!

Yes that lightheadedness was a nice familiar feeling, it'll pass soon and you'll learn to control your breathing after a while, when to breath and how not to blow too hard and still get your tone. Just keep going until you conquer one then go after another. I have some video posted on a thread here, check it out, thejethrotullboard.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=musicians&action=display&thread=71&page=5 come to think of it Serenade is there and thats a fairly easy one to try. You will get frustrated but just push through it, keep going. Good luck Darin

Awesome! New flute.
I'm very mediocre at the flute, but I can play a few things on it. I find a lot of Ian's "riffs" to be a bit hard to get down--probably because I'm not a natural.
I don't know if you like their music, but the Marshall Tucker Band has plenty of great flute parts in their repertoire, most of which are very easy to play--they helped me a lot in getting a handle for the flute.

I definitely got frustrated, but didn't have as much of ahard time as I did with Bouree. The fingering on that one sent me for a loop!

Living In The Past is rather easy and is in the easier low octave. Dan
