As a new feature here, we will be spotlighting other flutists in popular music every week. First up: Alanis Morissette. This is a beautiful song by a beautiful artist who has a beautiful voice. She plays flute at the beginning and end of the song. We love Alanis......

I swear that looks like Ian on keyboards at 3:06! Just noticed that!

I like her a lot, but she's no Martin Barre on the flute.

She is good. Very talented, very unique.
Same song - unplugged version - I think.

Opening track on her latest CD. Keyboard at the ends reminds me of Andy G. a bit. I think you'll know what I'm talking about. Another track off her latest album. Title track off her prior album. Whenever a woman's chorus is "I wanna be naked" I have to listen...

She is good. Very talented, very unique. Same song - unplugged version - I think. In this version she omits the flute introduction and only plays the flute coda at the end. Beautiful and unique voice, for sure. And I think I told you this once before, but I read an interview with her where she was discussing a romantic break-up she had, and I don't remember how exactly it came up, but she happened to mention that she was very "good" in the sack. Who knows, maybe that's what the song is about....she does say that she would be "good" even if she gained ten pounds! Jeff

Whenever a woman's chorus is "I wanna be naked" I have to listen... I like the top video, and I see what you mean about the keyboards at the end. Don't like the third one very much. But I really like the middle one a lot. I am pretty certain that she plays some flute on the new album, and I think on one or two other things, but I'm not 100%. Would love to find some more videos of her playing flute. We still have some time, as she is our featured flutist for the next 5 or 6 days. Jeff

Upon further investigation, it appears that Alanis does not, in fact, play flute on any other songs (at least not that I could find.) So although we are fans of hers, it seems that we have reached the end of the line as far as this thread is concerned. Stay tuned for our next featured flutist here on "Flutist of the Week," brought to you by The Jethro Tull Board. Jeff

My idea of a "proper" IA solo album would have Ian working with major artists like Alanis. I think they would make a good fit vocally. Mark Knopfler would be another, and of course he would have to ask Sting too.
